Yeah, a big obstacle in Naruto fanfics that don't change the canon hugely is the Wave mission. Which, if *not* taken by Naruto's team, is pretty much a guaranteed team wipe. Naruto's Jinchuuriki status is the only way they beat Haku at the same time as Zabuza. The only other time I've seen it done differently is when another team is taken, then Naruto's team is sent as backup anyway. Or they just... gloss over what happened, and try to get readers not to think about it too much.

So... when was Hidan recruited again?

slight correction: the forbidden technique naruto learned was the Multi Shadow clone Jutsu. Shadow clones arent forbidden, just the Multi variant
