Holy shit. So the Nights Watch, at 10000 men, largely goes around as a ranger/sheriff/marshall force on both sides of the wall. Then, the true vanguard against the Others is the Thenns, in the northernmost valley, warmed by springs, and able to defend for some time against the Others, especially with the means for dragonglass. Then in the event of an invasion from them, they can call on like 30000 people to go north, guided up by the clans and including the nights watch, giants, etc. Hell, plenty of men from Hardhome alone. All of them will be wielding the proper weapons, and those thenns that are not fighters could be evacuated to Hardhome without any issue at all. Now the others are fighting in a valley against 40k men at the very least, all of them having every weapon they could possibly need, including skinchangers and children as support. If this was the show long night the war would end there, if it was the book long night there would still be quite the stalemate given the defenses and advanced warnings.

I will say that a city of 500 thousand, that of a free city in fact more, would absolutely depend on a constant flow of traders-especially in the center of the North of all places, without a coast to rely on. Because of that, things like Giants would absolutely not be a legend and instead a well known fact, for with constant traders how would they stay a secret? Perhaps the wolves yes, since they are few and with the starks, even the children and such. But the giants? As they roam alongside men near Wintertown and the Moat? I seriously doubt that. It is also a curiosity how a city like Hardhome would manage to exist in the extreme cold of the true north. 200 thousand depending on seaborne trade, when in the winters it is said that the narrow sea becomes almost impassible, especially in the north. With overland not offering much in the way of food, and an incredibly hard trek to even eastwach, that would be a logistical nightmare in and of itself.

I am sure you will have some explanations of this, I mean for starters this is a magical world, and the children of all people have an accord with man here. So perhaps they help, perhaps glass gardens help, perhaps crazy advanced preservation helps, and perhaps amongst other things there is a great frugal and maritime culture to boot. I can believe it, I would just expect that the North is by far the biggest trader with the free cities by this point. They must be VERY well known in Braavos, hell white harbor must have a braavosi quarter.
