I'd like to say they were in Azkaban only due to their own actions, but the (fictional) reality is that if Voldy had won they would be heroes of the revolution instead of traitors to Magical Britain.

Of course it could also be said that they were only in Azkaban because they didn't have enough gold to bribe themselves out. Or, like the Lestranges, the shit they pulled made the price far too high for anyone to be able or willing to pay.
