Reviews for The Core Wars
Naraic chapter 3 . 11/15/2022
In general I am really liking this fic.

I feel that you are skipping over some stuff a lot assuming that people will find it too similar to unintended consequences. The story would be a more complete one with 5-8k extra words to this point that could be mostly copy and pasted.

Interestingly this fic is inspiring some ideas so I might try some scribblings for a real hard mode.

What I'm thinking is make the wand shortage global and start off with making very poor wands thats is a struggle to get it to work. Something like the wizards own hair and it takes the wand maker a dozen wands with the wizards own hair as a core material to get an acceptable match. So

If wand strength was on a 1 to 9 scale and wand compatibility is also on a 1 to 9 scale and the two are multiplied together to get a real wand rating it might take a wandmaker a dozen attempts to get a 4 where Ollivander would sell wands somewhere between 25 and 49 (with custom wandshops selling a higher quality product prewandout).

I wonder how many other places have Floo Powder stored and don't even think about it. For a place that doesn't really seem to use that much powder in their normal operations, Hogwarts sure has a lot. Only the hospital wing during the schoolyear should need to have a good supply.

The Weres are really getting aggressive, I think they could stay together even without 'Fen'.

Interesting snippets of news...

Thanks for sharing and take care.

Hmm, you are right this leaves more of challenge. But it requires more creative changes than currently envisioned. Can eleven trigger runes? Can the government take over food distribution?

Looking at climate disasters around the earth, they all require tools t (similar to wands) to relocate. But afterwards they often need to relocate or build differently. Back in the late 90’s or early 2000’s, Guenerville (sp) in Russian River had to rebuild on stilts.

With our increase in electric cars, I often think of magical batteries. It may not fit this story but someone else may want to take it on. Look at Hagrid Saves the World by Beekeeper.

Anyway, I love the story and look forward to the rest. Keep to your plan.

By the way, I am fat but still petite (5’3”). Using improperly sized canes are a pain the ass. With wands I want to be able to handle it. A shot between the eyes works bestm

I waited to finish some other stories before I started this one

I love the details going into rebuilding the society. By compressing time you highlight it.

Can other students train with them? Or will it be the Grangers.

I look forward to see what happens with the elves

Thanks for writing it.

It seems wrong somehow that Europe has no cores, aside from those like Fleur who just used their Grandma's Hair. Maybe not the same kind or as good of core but they could not have survived I think if they had none.

Thanks for the info on the emails.
Did you notice that it will have to be re-enabled every six months?

Thanks for the info!

And now I finally get the implications of the title.
Yikes! Hate that so many unicorns died! I thought the acromantula protected them.
Rough seas ahead!

First off, I'm enjoying this story very much, since it's so significantly different from 'Unexpected Consequences'. Thanks for sharing it with us. ;-)

Second, I was initially sympathetic towards the weres in the previous two chapters because Wizarding Britain is most definitely full of obnoxious, condescending, racist idiots, but now I'm hoping that everyone invovled with the unicorn slaughter is cursed with a painful and constantly worsening, debilitating illness that results in a painful and prolonged death.

I'm also really looking forward to seeing Ron show up at the Wand Shop, expecting to get handed one of H&H's wands and instead getting told to 'piss off.' ;-)

Definitely looking forward to seeing the next chapter.

Since it's a national emergency why not ask magical citizens to search their homes and attics for any antique items that have been made with magical creatures hides, hairs, bones and etc. I'm sure people like the Lovegoods have any number of items that could be tried out as a workable wand core. Just like old pianos had ivory keys back before it was banded. If you needed a wand bad enough it would be worth giving up some valuable item just like Seamus's family did with the unicorn.

What's with the werewolves? I can see having willing volunteers to rob for potion ingredients, but just ordering people to slaughter unicorns? According to Dumbledore when Tom was killing unicorns he told Harry that killing a unicorn "leads to a half-life, a cursed life." Surely even if this was ranked as an old wives tale there would be some who would hesitate or down right refuse to do this despicable act. Wish there had been some pushback from the pack to show what a heinous crime this is in the magical world.

Enjoying the alternative story, looking forward to reading the next chapter. Thanks for writing this.

Did you mean "smelled of excess perfume"?
"pillowcase" should be one word. As should "rollout". And "multimillionaires". And "snakeskin".
"finder's fee" needed an apostrophe.
"poleax" and "poleaxes" should be one word. As should "meanwhile".
If I were Rosmerta I would have thought that old ditty (which I had to listen to on YouTube first before typing up this paragraph because I didn't know it at all) but with the creepiest, most ominous orchestration or musical accompaniment possible. Because I think these ministry doofuses are going to get their fool selves killed...
Slughorn has children? EW! at any witch having had sex with him.
I am surprised Madam Pomfrey understood "like a chopstick".
They were going to ask Dobby to go to the "stationery store".
Unintended Condequences and The core Wars are chalk and cheese, IMO, never mind sufficiently different from one anohter.
"so-called" needed a hyphen. As did "blood-curdling".
I am glad Harry and Hermione got information about sitting their OWL exams.
I loathe Fenrir Greyback and his pack of murderous werewolves with every fibre of my being for killing those 44 unicorns.
You meant "girls' bathroom", "dire straits", for Harry to reply "The latter" to Devlin's question, "any of the remaining unicorn", "Steeljaw, the commander of the black brigade, was", "Leftfoot, the commander of the green brigade, was", "
If I didn't know Harry so well I would have lost a fair bit of respect for Harry there where Hagrid said "Great man Harry Potter". Because Hagrid said the exact same thing about Dumbles in canon.

Quite different from 'Unintended Consequences' (which was good) - I just hope you don't make it TOO dark.
Three points. 1 & 2 are definites, 3 I could be wrong about:-
1) Fred & George got wands with their girlfriends AND again with 'friends'.
2) Carol(?), the Were, refers to the group only having a few "stolen wands", when talking down Fenrir - where/when did they get them? (End of Ch. 2.)
3) Harry/someone refers to the Goblins getting the meat and the skull of the basilisk, I believe, yet Devyn(?) Whitehorn later mentions Harry will have the skull.
