Several things to say but. I’ll just list the two important one. Loved both the story and you a rant. It was like getting a two for one in a single chapter.

I was born in 1972, and the word 'retarded' doesn't offend me at all; in fact, because I have a physical disability, the school board of my town wanted me to attend a 'school for the mentally challenged' because they believed my physical disability also meant I was not mentally capable of understanding the lessons taught in a 'regular' school. My parents threatened to take them to court, and I went to a regular school where I was one of the students in the upper level for grades.
I spent most of my school years being called names, everything from 'gimp' and 'cripple' (despite being able to walk) to 'retarded'. Ironic when the word 'retard' means 'To hinder, or hold back'. So I made it a game of sorts as to how badly I could prove everyone who called me names WRONG.
The only person who has the power to hold you back is yourself.
