roman: he routinely hit me in the feels bruh. bro did EVERYTHING for his siblings. those characters always gut punch me like crazy. starts sobbing thinking about how he wanted to die as someone his siblings could still recognize... youre fucking joking. im tearing up again just thinking about it. he had such a nice bro alliance until uuuhhh until they all started dying off. really awkward. but he made a lot of really meaningful connections and shockingly stuck it through with ozzy bro until the very end, even taking a hit for him... what a guy. rest in peace roman i hope heaven gives you back your brain cells

ozzy: a really wild but consistently entertaining character. one of the most messed up backstories ive had to sit with for a while but im glad his sister could escape. it actually broke my heart though watching her find out where he was tho SOOOOBS. good friend even though i was wildly flopping back on forth on his and romans intentions with each other for a while. crazy hallucination delusion gas will do that to you! gg ozzy you played brilliantly

choux: GOD... GOD WHAT CAN I SAAAAYYY... she was the boss bitch of this syot. genuinely playing on a level UNPARALLELED. words cannot express how much i adore choux and that held up all the way to the end and forevermore. she was so evil but soooo determined you just have to respect it. its nothing personal, she just had things she wanted! i could never fault her for that. she was so effortlessly badass and cool and yeah its 1000% on brand that she repeatedly evaded death until THE MF FINAL 2 HAHAHAH. her power her mind. wow rip to a total powerhouse. my 2nd favorite character in this syot, of course after...

Hi Moose. This is more just a random assortment of thoughts from me. I just had to say well done for finishing this fic! Seeing you grow as a writer over the last 3 years since we started writing together has been insane. It seems like only yesterday that we all sent our kids in for this fic and now it's over. What a great finale too, I loved the constant action and transitioning to the families of the tributes (Scarlet escaped! What?!) I loved what you did with Ozzy and the arc you gave him and congrats to Vet! I've gotta send you another kid for your next syot. But yeah I'm proud of you!

In moments like this, I like to bastardize one of the favorite quotes from Genghis-Khan-in-Space: "There is only one unforgivable lie. That is the lie that says: this is the end, you have triumphed. You have achieved it, and now all that remains is to build that victory into a shelter and hide behind it. Now the lie says Vetiver is safe."

Whoah. That a great ending that was to the Games. Wonderfully written and satisfying. It really felt like a nice arc, like the final two standing had not just randomly stumbled there without a proper narrative to move them into position. So many neat details, like for example the spear that was a remembered part of the battlefield and was used by multiple people when they needed a weapon. Sand and rocks as a weapon, and making sharpened sticks when nothing else was left. It is little things like that that make the story about a fight to the death come alive interestingly.

Roman was the least likely to win, ever since his head injury. Ozzy had good chances, but was poorly armed. Roman's and Ozzy's chances relied on them being able to over power their opponents thanks to having made it as an alliance into the finale, but their lack of proper weapons and his injured state just did not allow them to push trough. This really reminds how important weapons are, as that single sword that Vetiver got from Amatus (one that Choux failed to hide after taking him down btw, BIG mistake) really was the decisive factor in this ending. A proper weapon is such a huge factor in human melee combat that it cannot be underestimated, with not even possible martial arts being able to help closing that gab well enough.

Choux, she made a wonderful finale opponent, who could also have worked as a victor, even fi a clear villain victor. She was a bit too clever for her own good, and not good enough in a melee fight. If you look at these games, Choux is a huge part why a career victory became so unlikely and the chances of outliers skyrocketed (3 outliers vs 1 career, the odds were not in her favor had the boys been more informed/smarter about taking her out). The career pack strategy relied on alliance for a reason, and anytime the pack falls apart early, the outliers become hugely more likely to win. Choux was a dangerous tribute, but mostly to her allies, who are of course her most dangerous competition, but far from only real threat in Hunger Games. You know, In-universe, I can almost imagine that when careers win a few years in a row, they become more oriented against each other and prone to just this type of internal collapse. Then when they see a game like this, they remember why the pack strategy is so effective even to the late game.

Vetiver. Oh Vetiver. He was not on my radar as possible victor at the times of the bloodbath and not even in the mid game. I can't recall but he could have even been a possible bloodbath guess for me. He did not have a lot that endeared me to him, other than his alliance relations and his memorable dog backstory, but in these couple final chapters he really solidified into someone I noticed I rooted for against Choux while they brawled in the shallow waters. That moment when he picked up the sword even when injured and went forward with the intention of fighting to go home was marvelous. There are many outliers in these games that I cannot imagine being capable of killing and thus not winning other than by accident, and for a long time I felt Vetiver was such a gentle soul. But no, he proved himself a fighter who did what needed to be done even when people like Roman and Ozzy stood in his way, it was them or him. It was such a great moment. Some SYOT stories fail to capture the change that the Games can cause in individuals towards self preservation and survival, but this one was super solid stuff. It reminds us that humans are not good and humans are not evil, and that many ordinary people can do horrid things in the right circumstances; good people have gone to war for all of human history. The Hunger Games are a wicked invention that preys upon the dark side of humanity for our (us readers as well) entertainment. It is great to see this very true Hunger Games finale play out, knowing that these people have a metaphorical gun to their head, a force that has ushered them into this scenario, this game board, and how they react in a way that is so dark but perfectly understandably and unapologizingly human.

Huh. What a ride it has been. Still the final chapters to go two wrap up the narrative in a proper way. Congratulations to Nell. And let us hope the future story in this universe manages to live up to these games.

oh my god moose.. im still reeling from this but oh my god. my boy ! my boy lives ! ;-; :heart: i truly did not think it would be him u had me so absolutely stressed during this whole finale :sob: the whole thing moose... everything was so so well done like god damn.

first off, roman - i love what you did with his arc so much. the struggle between his head injury and how it was making him act out of character vs what he actually wanted to do.. it was so visceral and even though he died in the end, im glad he died in the right state of mind. he vowed not to kill ozzy, and he didnt ;-; it will probably take his family - especially ermias. god poor ermias - a while to come to terms with roman's death, but ermias had been the one to point out how he didnt recognize his brother during f8 povs. maybe eventually he will realize that at the end, he did ;_; but Man. those family povs. that shit was absolutely brutal. and then u added them after the kids fucking died :stress: that was truly so cruel (but also a great move from a writing standpoint). but. christ. cant wait for vet to see the eurokas on his victory tour [insert unhinged emoji here] ...!

as for ozzy. i had a feeling he wouldn't win, but hot damn what a brutal fucking way for him to go out :sob: bro got choux'd... cooked. baked. ...lowkey if roman had let vet kill him, it wouldve been kinder. ...im glad roman's dead so he doesnt have to know that bc i think that would break him ;-; aughh that hurts ;-; like ozzy and roman were the ones to attack vet first.. but yeah. classic choux to strike by surprise. he almost got the upper hand on her but. her trickery is unmatched. really brutal for poor scarlet too.. shitass father wouldnt let her watch and by the time she escaped he's fucking dead and burnt to a crisp :withered: i hope she kills their dad for that. thats horrifying. ;-;

chouxxx oh my god choux... truly one of the most iconic characters from this fic. i love that she stole the show and ended up as the last career standing. i love how far she got bc i feel like in another story, we wouldn't have gotten to see her shine as much as she did. right from the start she was causing trouble, and right up to the end she was as well. truly nobody will be doing it like her ever again. if she couldnt win, 2nd place is definitely the next best thing (even though shes still dead but. shh.). grandpa macbeth was lowkey acting like a real prick in these povs so at least hes not getting what he wants.. unfortunately its at the cost of choux's life ;-; im gonna miss her whacky ass so much. what an awesome character, what an awesome arc, and what an awesome final opponent for my boy :gently holds:

and vetiver... god. im gently holding him so so hard ;-; i thought he was fucked for real when ozzy and roman attacked . man. his kills being three of the most iconic tributes in the arena is also deranged of you. his numbness at this point was honestly so terrifying and painful to read, like. the other tributes being scared of him when he first appeared . vet walking straight into the finale without a single care for whether or not he alerted someone (which he Did). and that fight with choux.. like. the way he just Stopped to wait her out. bro knew better than to get into her territory. Incredible chapter moose, this close to the end I wanted to say it’s been so deeply amazing and inspiring to see the way your writing has evolved. This pulled on the heartstrings like crazy! Still trying to come to terms with all of This . its so. head in hands. i dont even know where to start mannn.. i still cant believe u killed finch and cali. i cannot believe vet killed amatus. exa unfortunately makes sense but it Does make me real fucking sad ;-; finch cant have his little family forever and i hate that so muchhh ;-; like him thinking abt how its Wrong for exa to be so close to death bc shes small and shes supposed to grow big and fly . like. hes right ! hes so right! also i was not expecting amatus of all people to be the one to jump out of the trees and start chasing vet and finch and exa ;-; i fully thought it would be choux.. but of course she wouldn't attack like that :withered: amatus picking off exa without a thought and then chasing after vet and finch like. hhhh

im glad cali stole that kill from him though. but also cali promising to exa to kill amatus and then getting got herself . aughh. ..though i do believe she would have totally killed vet and finch too. she is a career after all. but alas she ended up taking the brunt of choux knives... the poisoned knives is such a fascinating weapon i love how effective its been. cali taking ronans hand at the end of this pov though is sooo ;-; that hurtss. truly this left me stunned bc i thought for sure she was gonna kill amatus, and u had me panicking here that that wouldnt be possible anymore.

amatus chasing after vet and finch was absolutely terrifying also. like him thinking of them as warm up kills and wastes of his time :withered: i guess that was his undoing in the end. finch airdropping onto him from above was absolutely iconic though. we all cheered, 10/10 :D and then felt immediate terror at the fact that this put finch into close range with amatus and :withered: him just picking them off and tossing them aside because theyre not as important to him as choux.. mann. cant say im disappointed that he ignored them though...! ;-;

this fight with roman and ozzy though damnnnn. this concussion is Really fucking roman up. his sense of judgement is just. so off the rails. such a fascinating descent though. im glad these two were eventually able to snap out of the fight but whoogh that was Tense i thought for sure one of them wouldnt make it out of that. and hey now they both have a chance ! just. imagining romans siblings (esp ermias) watching this whole fight go down... withered.

hoough i loved this scene with choux and amatus so much. another really fucking tense fight.. love seeing choux begin to unravel in the face of amatus's brute strength, like her inner monologue here was so so fascinating. and he really almost fucking got her too ! like damn ! literally on the edge of my seat. its so neat that he didnt though,, choux rises on top yet again :D for now... waiting out the poison was such a gamble but it turned out to be a good one. not ensuring that he was dead was also such a gamble but also like hot damn. badass as fuck BJVFDVHFHB. love seeing a girlboss win

also left an opportunity for. gestures. god. i do not know how to handle this. at first i thought for a sec that vet was gonna put finch out of his misery but hhhh im glad he didnt but god this was almost worse. the birds coming down to sing for finch is. ohh my god like. dude. dont even talk to me about thisss ;-; i cant handle this im too weak. there go my hopes and dreams of finch somehow sneaking out of the arena and surviving on his own in the wild :stress: i cant believe u actually killed him still, i dont know why i just. ohhh it hurts. and this next fucking part. vet just feeling nothing but Pure Rage and putting amatus down like a sick animal. :withered: "Vetiver isn't an angry person, but he's also never held his friend in his arms as he takes his last breath." umm good job though? like very good writing wise. so much suspense and action and development here. this was truly Huge and i dont know if im gonig to be the same anymore.. its not the same without finch ;-; im so scared for vet hes just a lad.. ;-; and roman and choux and ozzy.. man this is such a final four. terrified of what u have in store for everyone im sure its going to be just as miserable and tense and well done :heart:

Well damn. I think this is the best chapter of the story, at least the best arena chapter. It ha so much action and so much of that action is so well depicted. Where do I begin.
Choux vs Cali. Very good fight, and I think "This is how it ends then. Just as it started. You poisoning us from within" is the absolutely best quote from this story. Cali got a very solid end, one that caps off her story very well and elevates it in my eyes.
Ozzy and Ronan fight was perhaps the only kinda weird part of this chapter. It kinda came out of nowhere and in a bit forced way, but then it did not even really result in anything. Unless Ronan dies of his wounds.
Exa seemed like such a victor material, but when she was wounded, I started to think that perhaps not. She has some of that star power that shone the brighter the further she got, but did not get her across the finish line. This means that both of my predicted victors are dead this chapter. Great, job, I really like when things are unpredictable and thing have tension till the end.
Looks like Chaffinch has finched his last flinch. I was suprised how far he got, but I guess someone among the unlikely ones had to go furthest. I had a strange view on him, as I did not really connect to him as a character, but he was great meme material every now and then, and that is what life is really about is it not?
Amataus was the star of this chapter. Finally we has totally awesome, gritty and intense depiction of how a top tier brawler career like him fights. Small wounds mean little to a hulking boy like that, he can take more punishment than pretty much anyone in the arena. In the end he just could not quite finish off Choux, though he was probably dead even if he had taken her with him based on the condition Vetiver found him in. And damn, Vetiver actually got a kill. The power of anger.
Choux indeed managed to pull trough. She took out both of her fiercest rivals, though we will se if it was a pyrhic victory, as her wounding and depletion of resources really renders her easier prey to the outliers. in fact, the flow of the story would hint in the direction that since she was wounded so badly here, she is very much on her way to her grave as well.
So, here we are. 4 tributes standing. Or 3, if Ronan does not count as quite standing. Ozzy is probably my new favorite to win and my prediction, as he is in the best condition and position. Even if he did nothing (provided gamemakers leave the tributes be) everyone else more likely to die of their wounds, infection or exposure before him. Well then, finale, here we come. The end is near.

Last chapter before a finale? Feel fitting for all the high tension build up. I know nothing really happened, but for some reason I really liked this chapter, I got into a nice flow reading it. It made me think about HG fan writing, what kind of things I would write about if I wrote a story, and I think I got at least one neat tribute idea.
Now then. Finale is on the horizon. Time to make the final prediction. My previous thoughts still hold somewhat strong, those being Exa or Cali winning. Now, Exa is in a really bad shape, and the only way she probably wins is if everyone kills each other, as I think she would lose the battle of endurance even against Chaffinch of they were the last ones standing, she is that bad. Then again, Chaffinch surviving also depends of others killing them selves. You have kinda set up the Choux poison in a way that she can kill someone even beyond the grave if she hits them first, but not sure of you are going for that. In a big fight, Amateus stands the strongest: his two main rivals have ranged weapons that have massive drawbacks, what with limited poison and crossbow being a very slow reloading weapon if Cali misses a critical shot. If Cali shoots trough she probably wins. Choux really needs Amateus or Cali to kill the other first, she is unlikely to be able to take out both du to her limitations, though knife is still a knife. Roman and Ozzy would have decent chances since they are still allied, but I don't know how bad the concussion is. If they were both at their best, I would even predict one fo them to win.
I don't really have a good guess after this latest chapter and its developments, so I am still gonna say Exa or Cali, leaning on Cali if I had to say only one name. She seems somewhat obvious though, which makes me well think someone else can win, but I don't have a better case to make. Well, unto the last arena chapter.

I am not sure how many interviews I have seen implemented in SYOTs, but it is not a lot. It is a weird feeling when the tidbits you remember about the backstory of the tributes comes back with further building on like this. It actually feels like one could have predicted some final 8 tributes by wondering if their home circumstances were memorable.
Ozzy especially feels like someone who really needed this look at his home, since the fate of his sister was such a mystery. Set up -} pay off. Nice stuff. Other one I really was how Chaffinch's interview was arranged, they made do and it worked out very well.
