...Epic. Just epic. And not even in the internet sense. If the word awesome hadn't been stripped of all meaning through its common use, I would use that, but since that word is mostly pointless nowadays I'm going to stick with epic.
I like how Ryou isn't completely helpless, like the fandom sometimes makes him. The religious factor adds creepiness, but the religion doesn't seem forced upon the character, like it sometimes does when it is used to make a story more eerie. Your character, your Ryou, has reasons for stuff. Reasons are a good thing. Yay, characters with goals!
There are tons of other things that could be said here, but I'm going to guess that they've all already been said by other reviewers. Your flow is wonderful, the writing is poetic even in story form, and your spelling and grammar makes me weep with joy. There's not much else that I can say besides that this is very, very well done.
| Donteatacowman chapter 13 . 8/16/2010
Wow, so very (and I know I keep saying this, in one way or another) frightening. The Spirit-yami-he's so... evil. I've seen his characterization in other places; I've seen him as an abuser, a mass-murderer, a thief (as in canon), a psychopath... but this is a wholly different kind of evil, one that manipulates and loves and despises its victim all at once. With just a few words that in themselves have no meaning, really, and a couple steps, he manages to turn Ryou from dominating and self-sufficient to quivering and justifiably frightened-not because of Ryou's cowardice but because of yami's (how else can I put this?) evilness.
I've heard before that the one way to really control someone is to isolate them from anyone but yourself, and yami's really managed to do that well and thoroughly. And yami's mockery of caring/love is chilling. Does he really feel it? Is it all just an act? Or does he love Ryou in only the possessive sense? But his dedication to his host is perhaps the most frightful thing, considering its intensity and the fact that it is almost completely one-sided.
I don't like slash and don't read it, but I don't think you can consider this any form of homosexuality, yami's sensualness notwithstanding. I see you've rated this "M" despite its non-explicit content... but the undercurrent of this fic is certainly one of fear and horror, in very subtle ways, so I can partially understand why you placed it in such a category. And this is indeed angst, as you branded it, but just as much horror, I think...
Anyway, excellent, excellent fic. You have amazing writing skill and I immensely enjoyed reading this. Thank you, again, for writing.

I'm beginning to like this doctor more. He's starting to understand Ryou, finally... but a fat lot of good that does either one of them. Mr. Bakura's in denial about his son's problem, even with all the evidence for it staring him in the face... either he has a completely warped view of what's normal, sane, spoiled, and such... or he has a reason to pretend his son isn't "crazy." It doesn't seem like he's being honest with himself...
| Donteatacowman chapter 11 . 8/16/2010
"Point taken." Ugh. How can this doctor hold such little regard for Ryou's feelings?-what kind of therapy, especially hypnotism, can really work if the patient is uncooperative? Even something like, say, court-mandated rehab classes won't work unless the patient/prisoner is really trying to change...
I love how you described Ryou's movements when he's "under"-hugging himself like a child, jerking spasmodically, twitching and crying... and none of this feels fake, or sudden, or contrived. You write the human psyche really well.

Ooh, that's so frightening. I would hope that this obvious out-lash from the Spirit would mean more knowledge/understanding for Ryou's father and doctor-even a diagnosis of DID would be a little more helpful, no matter how inaccurate in actuality-but this fic must continue on, and we know how Ryou's story ends up later; so of course the problem of the Spirit can't be solved so easily.
I especially like the line "the burning insolence, Cheshire sneer, and effeminate lean in his son's hips." It's the perfect way to describe the Spirit's-Bakura's-body language and even character... at least in my mind.
Thank you for writing this chapter.
| Donteatacowman chapter 8 . 8/16/2010
Oh, this chapter is so HORRIBLE (and by that I mean the angst was extremely well-written, of course)-if only because Ryou and his father were actually GETTING somewhere, to some point of understanding, only to be diverted again (and you can't even blame the spirit of the Ring for that one, though he was certainly rooting in the background for Ryou's rebellion). Both Ryou and his father are hurt, feel unappreciated and unloved, and sadly both have pride in the way of reconciliation. :(
Great chapter, again.
| Donteatacowman chapter 6 . 8/16/2010
The doctor's cold, clinical treatment toward his patient is completely heinous; that's the only word for it. Except maybe hateful, despicable, short-sighted, egocentric, unsympathetic, and ignorant, but...
It's surprising to me that Disassociative Identity Disorder wasn't listed as a possible diagnosis, but it could be that this particular doctor was just blind to the clues. It's such a pity; he seemed so kind and trustworthy in the previous chapters...
I love that report of Ryou's. The language and message were interesting and the way he sneaked the capital-letters/secret-message in was extremely skillful, especially considering his age...
| Donteatacowman chapter 2 . 8/16/2010
"My child, we all have reason to be punished.
But no one deserves to be abused."
Wow. I really like that line.

gesh,it's been a long time since i read something this good!
| TheWammy'sHouseReject chapter 1 . 7/31/2010
Wow...this is all just so hauntingly realistic. i can actually see this happening.
| Hairii chapter 6 . 5/29/2010
The message is amazing-I didn't see it at first. "Please help me. I'm suffocating.
| Haley chapter 7 . 5/29/2010
It is amazing what goes on in the mind of a troubled child.
| Lylo West chapter 13 . 2/14/2010
This was an amazing character study on Ryou and Yami Bakura. I love how insane Bakura seems in the last chapter, like he's really desperate for affection and Ryou is giving it to him and then Bakura turns evil-ish. Just awesome.
| Rags chapter 13 . 8/10/2009
So sweet. In a weird, twisted sort of way.
