Reviews for Hope Springs Eternal: A Subterranean Romance
Tenderfoot chapter 20 . 2/7/2008
I don't think I can really tell you just how much I loved this story. Aside from been beautifully written, it retells the story of Hades and Persephone in a very touching and at times very funny way. If Disney would make a sequel to Hercules this should be it!

... Of course they'd probably leave out the good parts, like the Zeus and Hera's marriage not being perfect bliss or Hades lusting after some so much younger and being so wonderfully angsty about it. _

Anyhoo WELL DONE!

Airelle Vilka chapter 20 . 12/29/2007
What a wonderfully well informed story. As a fellow rabid Greek myth fan, I really have to tip my hat to you. Your research is impeccable, particularly on the various convoluted relationships among the older deities. (Erebos and Nyx's family tree alone could give someone a migraine.) Oh yes, and the story ain't bad either. I love Hades and Persephone together (cheesy, yes, very cheesy, but hey, what are you gonna do?). I'm also a bit sad for Leuke because she has to give up Hades, and a bit (okay, ahem, maybe more than a bit) jealous of Persephone... but then again, who isn't? :)

Anyway. Just quick, is there any reason why you, in the epilogue, referred to the Hecatonchires as the Hundred-Handed Giants instead of their proper name? I guess maybe it would have been too obscure, and the readers do need to know why they'd be so useful in building a new Tartarus... heh, a hundred arms probably would come in handy. Oh God, no pun intended, honest.

Also, I really like your take on Persephone's abilities in the Underworld, and the fact that she can do something good in it instead of just sitting on her throne doing nothing.

Awesome story. I only have one little Hercules ficlet on my profile, but I think you'd appreciate it. I'm fairly well informed on Roman/Latin versions, as well as thanatology/eschatology from various cultures, so if you ever need any more variety in your work (as if you don't have enough), shoot me an email and I'll be happy to assist in whatever way I can. _ It is always good to see a really, really good writer on FFN; they are usually lost in the mire of tween-fics, sadly.

Take care!
Diary chapter 19 . 12/16/2007
I really enjoyed this story.

My favourite parts (in no particular order) were:

1. Persephone being a vegetarian.

I've been a vegetarian since I was twelve and every place I've lived in is full of people who are not only omnivores but also see something unnatural/unrealistic/unhealthy about vegetarianism. So, I am happy to a ridiculous degree when a character in a book/show is also a vegetarian.

2. Aphrodite being married to Hephaestus.

When I started reading Greek Mythology, he and Hestia quickly became my favourite deities. I could be wrong, but I don't think Disney has adapted the story of the marriage between the goddess of love and the blacksmith god.

Also, I liked she was waiting for her workaholic husband rather than being glad her deformed husband wasn't around to ruin her fun. Since I saw the Medusa episode on Disney, I loved the Disney version of Aphrodite. Though, I was terribly disappointed that she didn't do something like say, 'Honey, let me tell you about my husband', or whip out a picture and say, 'This is my husband; we've been happily married for so-and-so', or something to that effect. Though, again, I'm not sure if the marriage-storyline has been kept by Disney.

I'm also not sure if Hephaestus's deformities have been kept by Disney.

3. Panic being jealous of Persephone and worried about Hades.

His questions about whether she came from a good family and had Hades's best interests at heart were so adorable and funny.

4. Hermes and Hades sort-of being friends.

I've always loved the Disney version of Hermes, partly because he's so funny, and partly because he's always seemed like he'd be willing to hang with almost anyone and see the parts of them that were good, even if they didn't want anyone to. Which was shown nicely by his knowing Hades would never rape somebody.

Also, I liked the part about him throwing a rock at Hades.

Some of my friends have been the kind where, if they or I were being idiotic/cruel, we'd kick one another or cuff the other on the back of the head.

5. The concept of reincarnation coming about.

I’m an agnostic atheist, but I do believe in the existence of souls. Someday, I think science will prove it. Whether reincarnation actually happens or not, I’m not sure, but I’d like to believe it does.

6. The concept of everyone getting a chance, being allowed into Paradise.

Even when I was young and believed in a deity, the thought of some people going to Hell bothered me, greatly. Even then, I understood that not everything was black-and-white, that some people were born in horrible circumstances, some never taught right from wrong, etc… So, I like stories where those who do wrong get an actual clean slate and a second chance.

Sorry for the long review and sorry if I came across as egotistic. Most of my favourite stories are ones that I can somewhat relate to.

Thank you for such a good story.
Hades'Queen chapter 12 . 12/11/2007
Ok I really think I should stop reading now and try to get some sleep, or at least get started on doing my laundry, lol. Anyway, I'd never before head of Hades loving anyone else before Persephone and find that quite interesting.
Hades'Queen chapter 11 . 12/11/2007
That was totally orgasmic, lol. Sweetest sex scene I've ever read.
Hades'Queen chapter 9 . 12/11/2007
OMG you made them so perfect for each other! If shes his queen wouldn't she totally have a share in his power and make reincarnation possible. This is like completely resetting life and death, kind of like the whole Jesus thing. Completely reset the mechanism of death.

Anyway, love the story.
Hades'Queen chapter 7 . 12/11/2007
"He grabbed his mind, hauled it upright, dusted it off." loved that mental picture.

On another note, isn't Thanatos another god (who has a brother whose name I never remember)?

Anyway, great chapter.
Hades'Queen chapter 5 . 12/11/2007
Wow... Hades is such a dork. That's ok, I love dorks, they are so adorable.

I noticed you like Lily/Snape drawings because I accidentally clicked on your faves on DeviantArt, when really I meant to look at your drawings for this story. I LOVE Snape, though most of what I write are Snape/OCs.

Anyway, going back to reading. Can't wait to read what happens next. You are a really good writer and really good artist. I feel so mediocre in comparison now. At least in my writing. My art skills are slightly beneath mediocre.
Hades'Queen chapter 4 . 12/11/2007
Wasn't Helios the god that rode the sun chariot across the sky?

Its raining here, so that seemed to put me in the mood for the first part of the chapter.

What's with all the singing? lol!
Hades'Queen chapter 3 . 12/11/2007
Oohh, so Styx is in cahoots with the Fates. And Hades is heading to Persephone's home! I'm so excited to read what happens next!
Hades'Queen chapter 2 . 12/11/2007
Loved the whole bit with the Fates, that was brilliant. I loved the poem too. Although Hecate singing is annoying. LOL.
Hades'Queen chapter 1 . 12/11/2007
I LOVE your story so far. Very funny.
B.M. Solis chapter 1 . 12/10/2007
Wowza!

I found you on Deviant art, me being a poor unfortunate soul unable to pay for an account, I browse through every once in awhile. I found a pic of Persephone and a link to here and I had to read it. I sat down for about an hour, reading your fan fic. I love it. Very good, and you are helping in the Bianca-is-starting-to-love-villains campaign. Now, I'm off to write a fanfic about Ursula.

Ps. I love how you added actual Greek legends to it and an explanation to them. I love Greek mythology.
Gone2Ao3 chapter 20 . 11/25/2007

third favorite to be precise, second being the lion king and first being sleeping beauty-got to love that handpainted scenery and soprano singing
