zafaran chapter 7 . 10/5/2005
I just reread the first six chapters of this on potions and snitches site and came back to to see if there were any more chapters here than there.

I've got a problem with "Forced Independence". Have they *never* heard of crutches? or a wheelchair? or anything like that? I cared for my mother through an amputation and rehab, and what you've got is very off. There are balance issues, strength issues-even with a *good* prosthesis walking with a mid-thigh level amputation takes 100 percent more energy and strength than it does for a person who still has a leg, mobility issues involving physical issues like peeing and such, taking a bath, etc. have to be dealt with (getting up off the john when you're handicapped is a bitch-and-a-half without something to lever up with such as crutches or rails, or room to swing to and from a wheelchair) Then there are the psychological issues from the mutilation of the body and the radical change in body image. They've found that amputees have a much better recovery if a procedure called "Immediate Post-operative Prosthesis" is used because it helps with the trauma-both physical and psychological. From the time of my mother's amputation until she started walking in the pool at the rehab hospital with her permanent prosthesis was sixteen days. The first fourteen days were spent with a cast on the stump with a fitting that they attached a partial prosthesis to so that she could stand on both feet beside her hospital bed in ICU, and then walk between balance bars at the rehab hospital while they were waiting for the end of the stump to heal enough for them to remove the surgical staples. At fourteen days she was at the point Harry is now with Pomphery having revised the stump and healed it. Mother was off her feet for two days at this point while they waited for the plaster cast of her stump to get to Charlotte, get the first temporary socket for the stump molded, and get the socket shipped back to her prothesistist{sp} so he could make her permanent prosthesis. Harry could actually be fit with a prosthesis at this point and resume walking before it effects strength and balance. It would make his other leg and his spine a hell of a lot happier. He's out of balance, and it's throwing the other sections of his body out of alignment, and with having to hop instead of using crutches, he's has increased his chances of damaging-possibly crippling-other parts of his body exponentially. Falling isn't a minor issue for someone with a new amputation either. Mom's protest had had clients who had fallen and had damaged their stumps so badly that the leg had to be re-amputated higher up the leg to make a new stump that was capable of wearing a different prosthesis because there was no chance of healing the previous stump to where it would ever be usable again for wearing a prosthesis. Hope this information helps, and I can't wait to see the next chapters. I hope your schedule and muse will allow you to write and update with new chapters sometime soon. Keep up the good work. Molly Morrison chapter 7 . 2/27/2005
The idea of making Harry be self-sufficient is a good one, I think. However, I can't help but wonder why they failed to give Harry a prosthetic leg before this. Snape might not teach him how to use it, but this would be a perfect time to force him to learn how to use it himself, instead of hopping around on one leg. I don't think learning to hop around is necessarily going to help him use the prosthetic leg better, though I'll grant that it will be good for him to be able to get around without it on.

And hehe, I have to note that CAPS-LOCK!Harry is back! ;-)
Amy2k chapter 7 . 2/27/2005
i loved this chapter. angry harry is so cool. i think snape has the right idea and the way he is treating harry is okay if maybe a little bit cruel with the whole binding spell but its the best way to make harry become dependant. this story is so cool. please please please update soon!
