The only critique I can think of is the use of '-sama', since they are in China at the time and wouldn't be using Japanese honorifics.

Nice of you to give us some historical background as well! The only thing that I can think of criticizing is the part where the scholar wrote "inu youkai" and "youkai", because as you said, the lengend was written by a scholar from China, but the scholars wouldn't have used Japanese words, right?

...unless my mind's playing tricks on me and it's written by a Japanese person, which in that case, ignore what I've wrote above.

Woh...just...woh. That was awesome! You really dove into these characters and showed every little detail of them and it was just amazing! The amount of research and stuff really also added as everything was to the period. That just took my breath away. And the romance was done fantasicly. I really loved how much detail you put into it and how well it all came together. This fic was just purely awesome and I love it so much. Go Ruri/Hari!
