I hope this isnt abandoned ive just found it and the first chapter had me hooked

Read your rant and am in total agreement. Spend what time you can with those you love. Do what is needful. They're gone soon enough, and you'll regret not being with them every minute you can. As for updating, if she can't follow a story line for a month, read it again. As many times as necessary. Life exists outside of fanfiction. It's just a simple little luxury.
