Your talent as a writer is enviable, but I disagree with
your comments about the pirate brand.
How can a scar or brand represent freedom?
A ship does...because a ship carries you away from
A brand/scar disfigures the skin (it is no longer healthy normal skin) is permanent (never can be restored to normal unmarked skin) and marks one as a pirate. Other pirates will accept you, but the law will hang you and
other people will shun you.
If one is not afraid of hanging, doesn't mind permanent scars on the body (and has forgotten the terrible pain
that was required to get it), and doesn't care they
will never be accepted in any other group of people
other than pirates, that is okay, but it seems to me
to be a very restrictive life...a brand seems to be
the exact opposite of "freedom".
Freedom includes the ability to mix and blend and move
freely from one group to another in society, with
restrictions only on level of education (which can be
remedied if one is intelligent enough) and speech (again,
something that can be changed). However, a pirate brand
permanently bars one from such movement.
For these reasons, I question your statement that Will
would think of a "P" burned into his skin as giving him
more freedom than he had before.
Merchants sail with freedom and have no brands on their skin. Merchants are not hung for just dealing in trade. Merchants get rich and are welcome in societies. Their children are given good educations and fine clothes, and they live in nice houses. Merchants set their own rules
as to where they sail and what they trade in.
Pirates may get rich, but they are not well educated and do not live in fine houses (well, do not live for long in fine houses before someone kills them). Plus, they are in danger of being hung, (probably for the bad deeds of some pirates and not their own code of honor. The worst pirates make life difficult for the best pirates). They cannot blend into any group other than pirates. They are thus restricted to a small group of people. It was rare
for a pirate to receive a pardon from the law and retire
to a ripe old age.
I think the pirate brand was designed so that other
pirates would feel safe around another "pirate" until they got to know them well. That is, anyone who was
willing to risk their neck (literally) by submitting to
a painful permanent procedure of branding which was
a one-way ticket to hanging if the law ever saw it,
could probably be "trusted"; more so than someone without that brand who might be a spy for the law.
In essence, people who branded themselves so they would
belong to the pirate group were giving up freedoms.
They gave up the freedom to mix freely in the rest of society. They gave up the freedom of being safe from
hanging simply on the basis of a brand-without a brand, their relationship to pirates would have to be proven

I love them all, especially the last one! I think i'd be cool if that actually happened to Will in the moviev (not that i'd like him being hurt, but I think it's time for him to take concrete steps towards being a pirate). More more! They're so good! :)
| MeraSparrow chapter 3 . 3/2/2006
aww, that's kinda cute.
and so true. a scar like that has so much more meaning than were meant by those who 'invented' it.
