I liked it when Saunders morphed into "an insolent punk hanging out on the a slummy city street corner"!

“Once Upon a Time” is a different style from some
of your other stories.
I think it was DocB who wrote me that some in the group
are risk takers and others are not. You are a risk taker.
I think I only told you in passing how much
I like your stories.
Is it ok to give a review of them here?
This story is incredibly good.
It has to be one of my favorites.
It is impossible to choose a favorite paragraph
out of such a perfect story,
but if I had to choose just one, I think this section
might be it,
Naturally it was Kirby, BAR man without equal and big
mouth to the extreme, who made the mistake of calling the
huge private “a dumb ass farm boy without the sense he was
born with! Caje is dead, goddamn it! Dead and no use you makin’ it worse by keepin’ some fairytale alive!”
For his hot-headed outburst, the slender rifleman was
lifted bodily up by his jacket and slammed repeatedly
into a crumbling stone wall.
Sergeant Saunders broke up the one sided fight
before Littlejohn had a chance to actually
do too much physical harm to the mouthy Irishman.
All Saunders said was “Saddle up, we’ve got a job to do.”
This story is a close second to “The Promise”.
My favorite section,
Lieutenant Hanley was standing over the foxhole,
looking down at his non-com. "We're moving out, Sergeant."
He didn't ask if Saunders thought he could make it.
He and Saunders both knew he would.
"Yes, sir. I'm ready, Lieutenant." Hanley reached down
and grabbed the Thompson Saunders handed out to him,
then reached down and pulled the sergeant out of the hole. Saunders paled and was a bit unsteady on his feet for the
first moment or two, then reached for his Tommy gun.
"Soldier." Hanley observed in the only private place
left to him, his mind.
To the officer it was a compliment not given lightly.
O . . . I like this one. It is excellent and creepy.
Sorta like that story “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge”
by Ambrose Pierce.
hopefully it is ok to review these here
( since they are not posted at Fanfiction )
