Betting that svetlanna is either baba yaga herself or of some relation to her...

Pretty amazing story even this second time around several years later. This story and Bungle in the Jungle are probably in my top 10 Harry Potter fanfics of all time. There are just so many interesting and creative elements to the story. Even six years after it was started, there are few fanfics out there that really match up to it. It’s a rare story that deviates so thoroughly from canon and runs far away from Hogwarts’ familiar halls. The number of well written OCs that appeared is just another example of its ambition.
Thanks for a truly great read!

Another prominent memory of this story I still retain years later is the image of Dumbledore turning Harry into a footrest and humiliating him. What a powerful and provocative scene.

“Just because he can't die right now doesn't mean we can't Obliviate him until he's a hollow shell and shove him in the deepest darkest hole we can find. Or, we could stop him and toss him through the Veil.” – I rather like these ideas. Very creative again. Lol, unfortunately if authors took those options their stories would fall apart rather quickly. It’s the same with acting reasonably and killing big name enemies instead of imprisoning/stunning them or merely having a giant fight that they invariably escape miraculously from.
"They're suffering already in case you haven't noticed, and England isn't the entire Wizarding world.” – Amen brother. That’s a truth that nobody seems to realize or acknowledge. There are many examples of this in canon itself, but authors say that phrase and write their stories like it’s a literal thing.
“On the other hand, one thing I have noticed is that you weren't really winning back in 1981, and you haven't changed your tactics since then.” – Lord, it’s like you’re reading my mind! Why does Dumbledore think the same tactics that failed him during the first war, will lead to different results against the same enemy!?

I have to say, one of the things that I remember most about this story years after reading it was the Demon speaking to Harry from his memory. That gives me chills every time. It’s a rather powerful image.
"Oh, is that all? You want to know what I think of Remus Lupin? Fuck Remus Lupin!" – It’s an interesting thing how so few fanfictions out there go after Lupin and hold him accountable for his actions or lack thereof in canon, even ones which have an outright evil Dumbledore. I like how different this story is on that front.
Assertive Harry, standing up for himself, taking no one’s shit and holding them accountable…it’s so invigorating! Every fanfiction demands he turn the other cheek and forgive and forget everything or go super evil. I like this route far better.

I like the mercenary spirit required in Harry demanding that Hermione have sex with him to keep the wards up. It’s such a departure from canon Harry that it really gets the blood pumping. I’m just sad he never carried it out, even when offered. This silly thing with Luna, who doesn’t fit anymore with his more adult personality, really limited the story. I respect trying to make it work out, but Harry is just so different after the events of Bungle in the Jungle. He’s not a young teenage hero anymore and a younger girl like Luna without those types of experiences just doesn’t work.

It’s funny. Reading this today, older, wiser, and more experienced, I found it ridiculous that Harry gave oaths about protecting the school, etc. Harry basically required Dumbledore to give an oath not to do illegal things that he shouldn’t have been doing anyways. That’s not something he needs to “pay for” with something equally valuable in return. Plus Dumbledore wanted Harry at Hogwarts anyway, while Harry did not truly want to be there. There was again, no reason to offer any reciprocal promises that could be used against him in the future.
It’s amazing how a few years since reading this story gives you a different perspective and allows you to spot potential issues before they truly arise.

I believe this was by far the best chapter of the series. It is interesting to see his transition from child to man to legend, hopefully.

I just read Bungle and Turn me Loose back to back. What a ride, what a rush. Amazing job.
| Jonuts chapter 16 . 3/6/2013
Well. Was totally expecting Hermione's blood for the anti-demon weapon. She was pretty much the biggest repentant liar in the story, AND a failed thief to boot! (Failed to steal Harry's free will). I thought she was perfect for it. Oh well, can't predict them all :D
Anyways, excellent story, though I still believe Hermione got off too lightly for her betrayal. Guess I'm just an unforgiving jerk.
| Jonuts chapter 10 . 3/6/2013
BAM! VINDICATION! I am too paranoid when reading. Lol. Now to see if Hermione survives Harry's collection of the blood of a repentant liar...
| Jonuts chapter 8 . 3/6/2013
I can't possibly be the only person that thinks their guide is Yaga Baba, can I? I'm wondering if it's that obvious, or if I'm that paranoid. Of course, you know that the reader knows that she's Yaga Baba, so she probably isn't...and my head just exploded.
| Jonuts chapter 2 . 3/5/2013
Bah, I hope Hermione's dead before the end of this story. Of all the characters in Harry Potter, her betraying Harry is far worse than anyone else's betrayal as far as I'm concerned .
| Anonymous chapter 8 . 2/19/2013
Chelyabinsk, really? I know you couldn't possibly have known in advance when I'd be reading this and wrote this chapter years ago, but still! So was that really a meteoroid, or did Baba Yaga and Harry duel it out?
