my personal favorite theory is that Voldemort's supporters were the younger, less influential, purebloods. the ones who wanted power, and didn't have it.

as for James being decent, I'd chalk it up to a mix of the Revelation that he used to be a bully, and Alan Rickman. the latter is also the only explanation I've come up with for people actually liking Snape.
