| Fanityfan chapter 18 . 8/4/2008
I love Firefly and have been scouring in hopes of finding a story that has the same spirit as the show. This story is the best I've seen so far. I've been following this for some time and you've managed to infuse the things we fell on love with on the TV screen on black and white consistently and imaginitively. Gongratulations and thanks are in order.
I also like how you've continued the events from the original storyline, no stupid random happenings here, no siree. You've managed to undercover the logic of how things work from behind the scenes and drew the right conclusions.
There's just one slight thing on this latest chapter that I'm afraid you maybe haven't thought through (I might be wrong and you've taken it into account). River's sleep catch phrase. It was only ever used once, and I believe there's a reason for that.
If I made a super assassin, I'd want to be able to stop her, but I'd also be monumentally stupid if I made it so that the only thing anyone needs to do to stop her is to know that way. In this case, the catch phrase WILL be leaked to unwanted ears, as it now has been in your story. A smarter way would be to give several phrases, and every one of them can only be used once. Or program a new word after the old one is used up or etc. I trust you see the huge flaw in the otherwise amazing assassin River, if she'll be forever rendered useless once the phrase is known. The people who trained her shouldn't have been that stupid.
If your plot calls for River being sent to never-never land by the bad guys, please let Obrin's exclamation be a dramatic and easily undestandable way to tell Mal: 'we know the next code too'.
Anyways, now that that's outta the way, I want to thank you again for taking the time to write this story, and write it RIGHT. This is professional writer quality. I hope you'll keep entertaining us for a while yet.

You did it again, with the horrible cliffhanger. That really isn't fair, you know. That said, I loved it, of course... but two weeks is entirely too long to wait for a new "episode." Tell your muse I said not to be such a damn hag.

Fabulous stuff, incredibly well written. You have great plots, good word choice, crazy intense action sequences and I enjoy your author's comentary notes at the end of each chapter. Its great that you have the whole gang, Firefly without Wash and Book is rarely exciting, though I have some fics that are fun but as a general rule its better when they are there. Your cleverness has been duely noted, you get our big damn heroes into and out of sticky situations with professional ease.
I totally agree with your permenant damage theory in River's situation. River will always be touched in the wits and anyone who writes differently is naive and silly in my view. You do River well and I have no fear of you making her normal. Please don't turn this into a Rayne fic, I don't think you are doing that persay, just want to guard against it. I can't wait to see what happens next, I think that the old colonel will try to make Mal give him River or he'll sick the Alliance on Serenity or some such. Keep up the engaging stories.

Ha! I knew it!
Re: Your note about River-I totally get it. It's why superheroes in comics usually have a major weakness-so that it's easier for the bad guys to fight them at least some of the time.
By the way, you don't need such extensive notes at the end of each chapter-just let us readers interpret your work as we will. Also, hinting at and saying things about the darkness to come takes some of the suspense out of it.

I'm guessing Niska. From the hints you've given in the last few chapters, he's pretty much the only one it could be besides Saffron, and she works alone and doesn't have the resources to hire teams of mercenaries. Atherton Wing would only have a grudge against Mal and/or Inara. So it pretty much has to be Niska, especially since Jubal Early is dead.

Nice developments this chapter...so the Browncoats need the Little Witch? a solid twist and a dilemma for Mal. We know he is capable of using her, but will he sell her out? I hope he doesn't, for both of their sakes. Simon leaving River to the others, when she is not well, to spend time with Kaylee, seems off. She would continue to be his focus, when he's not in Inara's shuttle, doing whatever, *winks*. By the way, I liked the addition of the Dust Devils, and the humor in Jayne's and River's scene was perfect. Wash alive still bugs me a bit. Joss is too fond of killing characters for him to still be alive. Other than that, your verse hasn’t strayed too far from canon. And I agree, we need more of the lovely Inara, because she has complications for Mal down to a science.

I like the ending with River hugging Jayne. He's kind of a big brother.

Oh my GOD, man! Must you leave us with such a cliffhanger? *giggles* That was fan-fucking-tastic. I do so love a little Peptuck with my morning coffee.

I really think that Mal's reasoning was right, even though I hate to think of him being so cruel. Good job on capturing the essence of Mal. I'm enjoying this story so far, I hope Niska gets what's coming to him.

between Vera getting a grenade launcher installed(there's gonna be spec. rounds right?) -blinky-, and some general damn good writing: you've made author favorites, I'll type somthing up on my profile next time I think about it.
now I've got to get back to reading now
