*cowers in the corner*
That last line was excellent.
| KendrixTermina chapter 1 . 1/31/2011
Nine fits the role of the looming shadow of the future painfully well. the last sentence was mindfblowing, as is your use of "echos" and lampshading certain similarities to paint the Doctor's developements.
Of course, one could argue that "the point where it all began" was actually "Genesis of the Daleks"...

That is beautiful and quite a harrowing story. I think this is the sort of darkness McCoy wanted for his Doctor and it is wonderful to read! Thank you so much xxx
| Caellach Tiger Eye chapter 1 . 12/31/2008
Creepy. I have to admit, the regenerations of the Doctor each time seem to reflect how his experiences affect him:
*1st-2nd: Having gone from grumpy and gruff, he becomes kindly and more of a 'favourite uncle'. The transition that began sometime in the first season was completed.
*2nd-3rd: After being found guilty in 'The War Games', he devoted himself to helping the human race through UNIT.
*3rd-4th: Eccentric, probably as a result of all his experiences, and open-minded from them as well.
*4th-5th: Perhaps from wanting to relax, and having faith in the nature of good, becoming the kindest Doctor.
*5th-6th: After the death of Adric, the euthanasia of Kamelion and Tegan's emotional breakdown, he feels the need to change drastically. When he regenerates to save Peri, he is so scarred that he becomes unstable and egocentric.
*6th-7th: After narrowly 'defeating' the Valeyard, the Doctor becomes more rational. A gamesman who realises that a Machiavellan method is often the key to victory, even if it hurts people - such as Ace in 'The Curse of Fenric'.
*7th-8th: Hard to say.
*8th-9th: His machinations as Seven led to his need to give up his carefree nature and whatever innocence was left - sacrificing Gallifrey to save the universe, in turn become embittered and scarred, an angry individual facing difficult moral choices.
*9th-10th: Inspired by Rose Tyler's determination and compassion, he becomes willing to change into a better man than before. Although he is stll dark and lonely, he is more amiable, somewhat less degrading and self-important, and willing to open his heart to more people.
So sorry about that, but I sort of felt I had to establish that point. I did enjoy this, as sad as it was, because it was well-written and interesting. Also a nice diagnostic as to why Nine may have gone for weeks without looking in the mirror, afraid of what he'd see. You've done a fine job here.

Okay that was chilling! You gave me goosebumps and I don't get those easily. Thank you for the wonderful 'future' ghost story.
| bookEnd chapter 1 . 8/8/2008
This is wonderful. The interactions between Seven and Nine are completely true and so painful; the similarities thoughtfully explored and the ending quite perfect.
