Reviews for The Goblin Market
Lady Knight Jocelyn chapter 38 . 2/5
The way forward is sometimes the way back.

That is what brought me here. Given the state of current affairs in this world, the way forward looks bleak. It at times leaves me in a spiral where everything feels out of my control. So I went back. Back to what used to comfort me, thrill me, and make me believe — I went back to reading, and especially reading fanfics. Labyrinth is a portal to my childhood. I remember reading fics in my preteen and teenage years that left a sour taste in my mouth because they just weren’t ever quite right. Borderline abusive or borderline out of character. Some were beloved. But I never stumbled upon your story. Until now. It brought magic back into my life. I don’t mean just the magic of your story which is quite utterly perfect and enthralling. But even your author notes, the glimpses into Celtic lore which very much are still a part of this world. That magic lives, and it reminded me that all is not bleak. And things aren’t always what they seem in this place.

Thank you for this gift. It might not be my dreams served up in a crystal ball, but the days I spent reading your work of art brought joy into my life.

Now I’m off to explore your other works. I hope you are doing well, and I wish you the very best in life!
RatherFabulous chapter 16 . 12/1/2023
You know, over the years, and completely unrelated, I've always wondered if Eve was actually offered a peach.
Think about it. Soft, smooth, flesh, sun-warmed, fragrant and sweet.
Will it taste of honey, as the best do, right from the tree? Will there be a worm inside?
And the shape...
I don't think that even a banana is so overtly sexual as a peach.
RatherFabulous chapter 12 . 11/30/2023
Your story is so very reminiscent of the work of Charles De Lint.

It's easy to say "Well, I saw that coming." of you're not living it.
People who experience things that are truly unexpected, inconceivably outside of their expectations, do have to get over the thin armor of disbelief, the certainty that such things could never happen here, or that they could never happen to ME."

I once spoke to a woman whose family, deemed too comfortable, were put into a work camp at the start of Castro's revolution in Cuba. She related that her father was warned by fleeing family and friends, but he kept insisting that it just couldn't happen. They were fortunate to be some of the last allowed to leave, with only the clothes on their backs, before it became illegal.

I know that this was written back when dinosaurs roamed the earth, but I feel I at least owe you a note of thanks for writing and posting it.

Hi! Idk if you still check your account here but WOW what an amazing story! I read it in two days and am obsessed! It’s truly one of the best fics I’ve ever read, and I really just don’t have the words.

Thank you so much for sharing this story with us. I know I’m (Almost ten years) late to the party, but better late than never.

Also I have no clue how reviews or comments work on this site haha. I’m an AO3 baby at heart, so I can only hope I’m not breaking any etiquette.

Again, just a beautiful story with incredible world building, fantastic characterization, and an engaging plot. I’ll be rereading this by tomorrow afternoon

Hello! I'm back! After 5 years! I re-read from the beginning and now I'm caught up! I'm excited to see where this goes! Poor Sarah 3
HaiToSenpai chapter 6 . 7/11/2023
If you’re Irish I would warn you away from reading this as it not only does Ireland a bit of injustice it’s also a bit offensive to the eyes. The story not only doesn’t use the correct words in Gaeilge (ie they spelt cailín as colleen, the bare minimum would be to do at least a bit of research into the langauge you’re using as a novelty) but the author won’t even let the culchies speak normally LMAO (using o’, aye, and t’wer, it’s absolutely galling)
Miss A Lanious chapter 38 . 1/1/2023
I just stumbled on this one and I haven't been able to stop, it's such a wonderful story! thank you!
Cat chapter 1 . 10/2/2022
Hi,
you don't know me but when I heard the news that is probably shutting down for good, this fic was the first I thought about being potentially lost forever (just noticed that you published it on Ao3, thanks for that so much). I just wanted to take the time to let you know that this story and your telling of it inspired my writing so much. I've returned to it so many times since I first read it when I was seventeen (25 now). It has a permanent spot on my favorites shelf, your writing of Jareth and Sarah has never failed to make me smile, and I will always remember this story you told. Thank you so much, I hope you're doing well 3
Ailne023 chapter 38 . 9/26/2022
This was soo good! Pretty sure I'll reread this again sometime in the future. i loved how both Sarah and Jareth stayed in character. And I appreciated how Jareth was cruel but not to the point of being abusive or fiendish. And to echo others, I would love to read more about Riven and Etain's story! Thank you for such an exhilarating journey!
Guest chapter 1 . 4/4/2022
It's a wonder how many people like to read about charismatic abusers. This is not okay. I remember stumbling upon this a long time ago. I dropped it almost immediately after the ritual scene and tried to forget this awful plot. Recently I've accidentally read another fanfiction by the same author. And it was awesome. I went to check other stories... Oh, right. This again. I admit, I got interested if there were more people this time around who dislike it... Nope. Just be a magical fae king and you can do whatever, they'll love you anyway. As a therapist to an abused and gaslighted by her husband girl in a culture where bride stealing could still happen if one really wants to, I do hope all those swooning over this fiction's Jareth people in comments never encounter someone like him in real life. It's not a happy ending when you “get used to liking it in the process”.
Angervo chapter 38 . 12/28/2021
I know that this story was finished years ago but I still felt that I needed to leave a comment because this story was so incredibly well written and just so … perfect. I only found the world of Labyrinth recently, despite being a kid of the 80s and a fan of all the works of Jim Henson. For some reason, I never came across this particular movie and even when I learned of its existence I could not find it anywhere. This Christmas I finally found it, watched it two and a half times in a row - and was left feeling desperate for some kind of closure for the story. And thanks for the fantastic world of fanfiction (which I was familiar with already, being a long-term fan on Inuyasha fanfics) I found this story. Took me two days to read through but hey, it’s Christmas holidays. And your Jareth was spot on, every line, every move. The whole idea of him running the Labyrinth and encountering all the familiar characters - and some new ones, all perfectly in line with the original plot and atmosphere. And interwoven with Celtic mythology - something I also love and have an interest in (despite being Finnish, with no Irish roots whatsoever, but Ireland and its culture have always held a special place in my heart). It is simply awesome, I cannot think of any other word. Thank you so much!
