My previous review was poorly structured, but I think my point was worth making: D'arkYagam'i is a genuinely good writer.

Yes, I am serious. Please let me explain in an (admittedly) pedantic style. I'll avoid any spoilers that may ruin the fun, but some plot points will be discussed.

'Light and Dark The Adventures of Dark Yagami' is very, very poorly written, yes. That's undeniable. An observant reader may notice the title is lacking a much-needed colon. However, the author quickly establishes the setting as an absurd, parodic version of the 'Death Note' universe with the following statement:

"As he got to his house he saw a strange car outside and he knew immediately it was not American because the wheel was on the wrong side."

Now, a new reader may think this is merely an example of poor writing. I'll explain why I disagree in a short while.

Firstly, this presents the setting as American (instead of the original story's Japanese) in such a casual fashion it seems the author thought it was obvious. Secondly, it also sets the tone as one where realistic storytelling is put aside in favor of absurdist humor.

The reason why I think it's intentional comedy (as opposed to simply incompetence) is that the narration only gets MORE ridiculous as the story progresses, while a serious effort would see slight improvements or merely remain the same. Here's a snippet of Chapter 4:

"'I will have to use stealth instead' said L and jumped in the broken window screaming."

Classic subversion of expectations coupled with a parody of the not-at-all-stealthy approach to stealth missions in many works of fiction.

The rest of the story must be read to be believed; the pacing is just as insane as the plot. It introduces characters and concepts at just the wrong times and in just the wrong ways, which only adds to the general absurdity of the characterization and storytelling. For the sake of simplicity, we will skip to a later point (Chapter 42, although at one point the author simply decides to misnumber them):

"'HOW DAR YOU!' roared dark and bit blud really hard. Blud didn't have blood inside so instead custard came spurting out!"

Believe me when I say it does NOT make any more sense in context. This quote (despite coming from the very last chapter) cannot convey the brain-rotting process the reader has been subjected to at this point: time loops, "nuclears" (that is to say, nuclear weapons) and clones have been repeatedly brought up, with God, "Einstene" and "Shakespeer" all showing up at various points accompanied by many religious and historical inaccuracies. It's incredible how much content has been crammed into a relatively short text.

The epilogues are not much better: in an effort to connect every (yes, EVERY) previously shown character and plot point with the main plot (which is, unsurprisingly, pretty much impossible), the author is willing to sacrifice any semblance of continuity or consistency the story had to begin with. When I tell you the main cast is composed entirely of alternate versions of the same handful of characters, I am not exaggerating in the slightest.

Aside from all of this, the author uses an impressive amount of comedic devices throughout the story, from simple (though unbelievably creative) randomness and subversion to elaborately set up "four shadows" (foreshadowing) and all sorts of irrelevant tangents that inevitably pile up until any possible resemblance to the original anime or manga is mere coincidence.

I sincerely believe the author's deep understanding and love of 'Death Note' and its universe is what allowed him to write such an antithesis of everything it represents that's just as enjoyable as the work it's based on.

In conclusion, I sincerely recommend this story (and the rest of the author's output) to any fan of comedic writing. I hope this makes you appreciate it more.

Even though it begins like any other mediocre fanfiction, 'Light and Dark The Adventures of Dark Yagami' soon become so full of bizarre situations and out-of-character moments that it's impossible not to laugh at the absurdity.

By the time one's done reading this masterpiece, the author has abandoned all logic or continuity in favor of doing whatever the heck it wants to surprise the reader. Wether it started out as an elaborate joke or the writer realized how terrible it was midway through is irrelevant: it's obvious this is the work of a very skilled writer masquerading as a childish, irrational fool.

Every chapter is full of quotable, absurd situations and dialogues that make me smile every time I remember them. It will forever remain as one of my favorite pieces of intentionally bad writing, and a source if joy in the darkest if times.

This is a power fantasy but every single minucious detail of this story is art, I love how you can see this guy's thinking process. This man is a master of the twists, a drunken master who doesn't know what he does, but a master anyway. Ten blood bananas out of ten, defienetly recomend it.

Wow, wow, wow, wow, wow. I had been told this was "Best Worst Death Note Fanfic" and now I understand why. Wow, really. I only got to chapter 10 and I couldn't follow it (and believe me I tried). But, if there really are people who liked it, congratulations and I really mean it.
