For those of us who know and love the book, Fried Green Tomatoes (at the Whistle-Stop Cafe), this simple story is made wonderful by the line right near the end where Buddy Jnr is, “caught up in his Aunt Idgie's spell even if he couldn't exactly understand the stories she was telling yet.”
Of course we remember a couple of things, first that Idgie had loved Buddy Snr even though she put on a tough exterior and refused to talk of him when he was killed.
And, Idgie was always full of stories. Some of those stories were too ridiculous to be true but others were quite feasible while being far-fetched enough to leave the listener with a certain doubt in his or her mind.
(Did you know there used to be a lake near the cafe but one winter, during a frost that lake froze over and the ducks sitting on it and, when they flew off, they took the lake away with them?).
The other aspect of the story you’ve captured in a perfectly succinct way is the relationship between Idgie and Ruth. “Idgie smiled and reached out to brush a piece of Ruth's hair back behind her ear. Her fingers trailed over Ruth's cheek lightly as she did.”
That’s a wonderful line. Just how did Idgie feel about Ruth? A friend, or something more...?
Thank you for your story and well done.
