amusewithaview chapter 2 . 9/13/2009 *grins* SO happy to see an update! Liked the first chapter and this one was just as good. Dirac is going to end up being a douchebag, isn't he? *le sigh* Ah well, I will prepare to hate him. |
Phlybabe chapter 2 . 7/18/2009 You know, I've come to the conclusion that Mirrim and Tai do not have honorifics simply because their names are short enough not to need them. Lessa, Moretta, and Jora too all had short names as far as syllables go. This is very important because dragons, as explained in Dragon's Dawn, tend to slur their words, especially during Threadfall. Males whose names are generally much longer(Felessan, Famanoran Falloner, and Fallarnon)are harder for a dragon to say on the fly...or even in regular speak. Thus, the dragons had a tendency to shorten their riders names a syllable or two. Miranda is an excellent female name to explore an honorific with. But enough about silly names! This fic is very good and you do a very good job of portraying how a patriarchal society like Pern's must cope with a woman in a man's position. :) |
goldleaves chapter 2 . 6/21/2009 can't wait for the next part |

firedrakegirl chapter 2 . 5/24/2009 wow |
LaurieH chapter 2 . 5/24/2009 I'm glad you left her name elided. I belong to a 'zine Weyr, which was established before Mirrim ever Impressed Path - and all the women on fighting dragons have elided names. So you're just following a very, very old tradition. :) I think that the RPG Weyrs usually have the Weyrlings riding between 8 months and a year. However - I'm not sure how integral the training is to your plot - though I would think very, since this is someone who will be needing to overcome adversity. Biggest issue with this chapter is that it's too short! (I complain about that type of thing a lot, though. *laughs* You were using 'weeks'instead of 'sevendays', and 'years' instead of 'Turns'. |
Red Dragon Spirit Ranger chapter 1 . 5/21/2009 ok, First things first. quote: looked grand against the brown scales of the dragon who had bore her and her parents here. Pernese Dragons do not have scales, They have hide. A soft smooth hide that according to Anne feels like suede. Next is that women don't contract their names when they impress be it to gold, green or another colour. If you read Anne's books, Neither Mirrim, Tai nor any of the other female riders of fighting dragons contract their names. This strikes me as being nothing more than a cheap ploy, to make her seem singled out from the other riders. Be careful with things such as this, for they stray dangerously close to Mary-sueism. Your writing is good, if a little clichéd. Keep it up and I see this heading towards being a truly enjoyable story. |
Brownriderco chapter 2 . 5/19/2009 This continues to be a very good story with the plot advancing nicely if a bit quickly, but that can be chalked up to writing style. From what I remember a pair's first flight is something like 6 months to a turn after hatching. Not entirely sure on this. The first riders (Dragon's Dawn), figured about a year although Connell rode Carenath after about 9 or 10 months. Something like that. All in all a very good continuation to the story. Looking forward to more. |
