|Reviews for Assassin Ianto: Children of Earth|
| Blue September chapter 40 . 10/15/2013
I was liking this story, right up until we got to where Ianto dies in the original series and then when Stephen dies. I feel like it completely misses the mark of the original series. Ianto's death in CoE was both moving and catalytic because it was permanent. Here it doesn't really mean much; doesn't cause the change in Jack that it had before. Here, Jack just sudden;y turns from Alice's overprotective father to the man who wants to murder Alice's son. There's a huge disconnect there that had no real lead up.
The other issue I had was that the point in the original, is that sometimes there just aren't any good choices. There's a bad choice and a worse choice, and can you live with yourself after making that decision. In the original, Jack barely wants to think about what he has to do, but he has minutes, even seconds before 10% of the Earth's children will be handed over so he makes a choice. Here, you've done basically what the Torchwood writers do all the time. Jack gets all the hard choices while everyone else either gets magical solutions to their problems, or lets Jack handle them and blame him afterwards. You went the magical solution route, where Ianto somehow synthesizes magical puberty reversing blood in minutes and saves the world and Stephen. It just feels like Ianto can do no wrong. It's not really an improvement on the Gwen can do no wrong attitude of the actual show.
I feel like this could have been a much more powerful story if there just wasn't any easy answer and both Jack and Ianto had to then deal with the fallout from Stephen's death. Would they stay together? Would that have been too hard? Would they blame each other? It would have been much more interesting to see than the age old blame Jack for everything solution.
I realise that this is an old story, so it's likely that your writing style and characterizations have changed a lot in the interim. Having enjoyed your Harry Potter crossover, I know that you can write some pretty good stuff. This one was a bit of a miss for me, but I still look forward to reading more from you in the future. Good luck.

Great stories, I've enjoyed all of the assassin Ianto tells. Are the others (Rebuilding and Lonely Battle Cry) going to be posted anywhere? I'm hooked and was looking forward to seeing where you were going next.

Wow, I'm totally loving it so far! Immortal JackxIanto is always love.
And you're right; paramedics don't carry weapons. I'm an EMT (American, so we have slightly different rules), and most ambulance services expressly forbid the carrying of any weapons, including stun guns, knives, and even pepper spray. The EMTs that carry weapons are usually the ones in extremely rural areas, where the police response time is over an hour.
Which is actually a huge issue in the EMT community; should we be allowed to carry a concealed weapon? (I've had a call where we were loading a patient onto an ambulance when some guy showed up and was walking around carrying a shotgun for no apparent reason. Needless to say, we pretty much shoved the patient into the back of the ambulance and sprinted for the front doors.) Some believe it would cause more harm than good, but some think we should be able to protect ourselves.
According to a friend of mine who is from the UK, it's even more rare for public servants to carry weapons over there.
So yes, random information time is over. Loving the fic so far. You're obviously a very talented writer.
