Guest chapter 26 . 1/20/2022
I fail to see how Iroh will restore airbending to the world. What kind of spirits grant airbending? Also, aren't Air Nomads an ethnic group, not just wind magic users?

I like how you've written Katara even though she acts like a spoiled child

So Iroh has zero idea about Sozin's Comet? Really? Isn't he a wise old man? Does no one in the Fire Nation know? Cause if I did, I'd definitely bet on Fire Nation victory, if they can nuke a nation to nothing before the Avatar is old enough to shave. Zhao definitely knew. He mentioned it in The Blue Spirit.
Guest chapter 25 . 1/20/2022
The way Kuei asked that lonely question was hilarious

I like how Jee considers Zhao, of all people, a war hero. Really shows again how screwed up the Fire Nation is

Man, I love Iroh. He's super well written here. His recounting of events leading up to the war and air nomad genocide seems super believable, but as he said, the truth is lost to history

So Kyoshi used a hurricane to massacre a certain group in the Fire Nation?
Guest chapter 24 . 1/20/2022
Wait. So while fighting Katara, before the waterbedender could interfere but while Katara was attacking? Azula generated lightning fast enough to strike Aang?

I'm certain now that Zuko has zero idea Sozin's Comet is coming. Which makes little sense, that should be taught to fire princes.
Guest chapter 22 . 1/19/2022
Katara... you saw Azula almost kill Iroh... is killing Zuko that hard to believe. And even Aang would say Azula seems cruel to Zuko.
Soooo... firebenders... can use the Force to make strong willed people obey them... I'm sorry but what? I can almost buy Fire Nation people (even NONBENDERS) being genetically/magically loyal for life (which in the show was unique to Zuko, because THAT WAS ABOUT HIS CHARACTER ARC, NOT HIS RACE) but the ability to what, use their presence to make strong willed weaklings obey them? So that's what Azula does? She doesn't have to charm or threaten or awe people, just use magic to make them obey? This is too easy! It doesn't feel earned at all! If it at least meant Azula could read people better or something, this feels like using the Force on stormtroopers.

Yaoren are a cool concept.
Guest chapter 21 . 1/19/2022
So an ancestor of Zuko was adopted into Mai's family around the time of Sozin's reign. That ancestor Momji was a half or full sister of Illah, Zuko's paternal grandmother. Yeah that is messy, no wonder they mixed it up. Poor Mai.

Wait a minute, back up. Are you saying Illah was related to Azulon? As in, his sister? That's just gross.

Again, though this is years too late, there is no reason to think you have to descend from a nice person to be a nice person. That was not a theme of the show. That absolutely wrecks the point of "the Avatar and the Fire Lord" that anyone is capable of great good and great evil.

Great fic all the same
Guest chapter 20 . 1/19/2022
Now that you mention it, it most definitely was a trap by Long Feng
thecagedsong chapter 86 . 1/20/2022
silly, but when Azusa says Avatar's pet here, I always thought she meant Toph. But she's used "the Avatars own earth bending teacher before" and reports of Toph during the Ba Sing Sei take over probably earned toph that much respect. Katara is "the Avatars waterbender" Sokka gets his name, again actual respect for someone that can out plan her once. She's actually talking about Appa here
Guest chapter 19 . 1/18/2022
I've really enjoyed the Ba Sing Se arc for its novelty and originality but man did I miss the gaang
Guest chapter 18 . 1/18/2022
Is no one thinking of Sozin's Comet? Does it not exist in this fic? The Fire Nation soon has the power to destroy an entire nation again, you really think anyone left will be a problem to deal with? Except Aang does something of course

Iroh, you let Aang step into the pond. And I'm still no closer to seeing what Aang did against a genocidal invasion fleet as a warcrime, more like Zhao's fault for killing a deified spirit responsible for balancing nature. I'm not leaving it up to FIRE NATION ROYALTY to decide what's an acceptable way to fight the Fire Navy
Guest chapter 15 . 1/17/2022
Zuko really is traumatized by Koizilla wiping out Zhao's fleet, huh. Weren't they kinda asking for it? And about honorable surrender, remember what Fire Nation do to their prisoners. Not honorable at all. And don't delude yourself, we all know what Zhao would've done to the people of the Water Tribe.

I can't believe Zuko blew his cover so casually in his rage like that.
Guest chapter 14 . 1/16/2022
Regarding the author notes, no way did the canon imply that Sozin's line is genetically evil. It's their environment and upbringing that exacerbate some of the inherent bad traits. Iroh used to be a bad person as well, before losing his son and going into exile with Zuko made him think twice about the world.
Guest chapter 13 . 1/15/2022
All this talk of "you need lords to survive" sounds like something pretty convenient for lords to convince their subjects of, if you ask me.

I know war crimes and genocide used to be more common in wars of the past, but again, invading the Fire Nation's homeland and exterminating its populace is next to impossible for any of the other nations, especially after enduring a hundred years of war. Also, just because ONE shaman said that he wanted to "destroy the Fire Nation" Amaya thinks that's the Northern Water Tribe's ultimate goal? Their ultimate goal is survival because destroying the Fire Nation, without the Avatar, who is of all the nations and wouldn't do such a thing, is impossible.

Damn. Iroh is straight up telling Zuko to kill his own sister. I know it's necessary, but Iroh is both more capable and ready to waste her than Zuko may ever be

So Ursa might be a dragon's child? That's what makes Zuko and Azula naturals?

Iroh and Amaya are just the best together. His reaction was fantastic to Zuko. I hope Amaya sticks around with them.
thecagedsong chapter 59 . 1/17/2022
I just realized that the fact that Master benders can tell lies from truth isn't really explained. Toph knowing lies was about her seismic sense, telling the changes in heart rate and body rhythms that accompany lies. In Embers though, where multiple Master benders know lies from truth, it could be connect to statements and language being a subtle use of Chi. Spirits take notice when you declare something, and promises are a whole level of binding. Who lies, what even means, and who tells the truth is a huge theme here. Lying uses chi differently than telling the truth
thecagedsong chapter 59 . 1/16/2022
I love the scene of Toph comforting Hitomi. Her arc is subtle, (hard to make her more awesome) but I don't think she would have considered Hitomi at all in the beginning after being given an order to retreat. But she's learned to listen to what people don't say, and been forced to look at bigger pictures like Zuko and Iron do. for a 12 year old, she's learned that the world isn't about her, though that's still her second guess. I don't know if I'm explaining it right, but coupled with learning about the things she can't do alone, her arc is subtle, complicated, and about growing up as much as the rest of them.
Guest chapter 12 . 1/14/2022
Zuko, Ozai's hair isn't even gray. He'll live for a minimum fifty years if he stays healthy. If he were Azulon's age all this worrying would make some sense. But he's not, and Sozin's Comet will come long before he dies. Thinking the Fire Nation homeland is in peril is just down right idiotic. It's the rest of the world that's in peril, your waterbending is pretty much irrelevant in the grand scheme of things. While it tells me that Zuko cares about protecting lives, especially his people's, it's silly to worry so much about a threat THAT DOESN'T EXIST posed by people, who in a couple months, ARE LIKELY GOING TO CEASE TO EXIST
