| Cheshire chapter 9 . 7/15/2010
This story is fantastic. I love the different path for a story I know well just by replacing the protagonist with Solaufein. Deekin gets to come along, too (Yay for Deekin!), Haer'Dalis is a fun addition, and Nathyrra is her delightful self. Poor Berger- but fitting curse on Solaufein. Makes it interesting that it is not the usual geis that the original tale says. Looks like the four are headed to the Underdark now!

Great chapter! The battle scene is well-written - it's easy to visualize, with just the right amount of description. As for Halaster, his demented ramblings are both funny and very unnerving.

I had a feeling that Solaufein would face the mad mage's wrath for killing Berger. What a great curse!
| BronxWench chapter 9 . 1/15/2010
Halaster is so wonderfully mad in this chapter. I do like the twist you put on the geas as well, a much more fitting 'punishment' for Solaufein, I think. So very drow, both Solaufein and Nathyrra, and you captured the essential paradox of drow who worship Eilstraee quite well. How do they learn mercy, when their entire lives have been devoid of it?
Lovely pacing, gorgeous battle scene, and perfect Halaster...what more can I ask? :D

I like the sneaky little Baldur's Gate references in this chapter (the silver dragon and the Bhaalspawn). And it's nice to see that Haer'Dalis is still very much a Doomguard - I think it's an important aspect of his personality. The banter between him and Nathyrra is a lot of fun and also in character. I'm looking forward to more of it ;-)

The stairs "chewed" into the rock. That's not ominous-much. His longing for his former life is palpable.
I loved this line: "Solaufein saw her give the tiefling an up-and-down look that would have had any sensible male cowering in apology." But sensible doesn't always describe HD.
I loved this exchange between Nathyrra and HD too: “That’s better. I guess. Something about you still makes my hand itch for a whip.”
“I have that effect on women, I’m told.”
I believe he does too. And as homesick as he is, Solaufein bristles at being a deferential male. It could be that Elistraee has answered his question.
I've always thought Deekin was underrated. He really does come up with the ideas, doesn't he.
| BronxWench chapter 8 . 1/10/2010
I must say, Haer'Dalis and Nathyrra are wildly amusing together. poor Solaufein, though... shows the proper amount of deference indeed...
Your drow are so very... drow. Nathyrra is quite unrepentant about her past as a Red Sister, and she falls easily back into that role. Hells, she'd have scared me as well as she did that battle cleric. And the way she oh-so-casually admits to having been the one to craft the runestones holding Halaster...

Oh, Sharpbriar really deserves his name, doesn't he? :) And I really agree with Solaufein.
Poor Prince Peppermint, I mean Deekin, he is such a team player. He's always nicely competant.
Nice action and a literal dungeon crawl!
| MorwennaTheWicked chapter 7 . 12/30/2009
I can't blame Solaufein in wanting to leave Sharpbriar a grease spot on the wall, especially when he could have stopped him from killing Berger and didn't. Nice cliffhanger too having to decide whether to risk the stairs.
| BronxWench chapter 7 . 12/30/2009
Ah, Sharpbriar... such a little brat, he is. Well, I can't say I didn't have the urge to kill Berger myself, a time or two. That voice drives me mad.
Still, the picture of a very angry, very naked drow wielding a stone golem's arm as a club is just so... intriguing. Add a very angry, very naked tiefling who's nearly been stuck fast in an air vent and who is no doubt cursing in tongues never before heard on the Prime, and the picture gets better. They are a wonderful pair, those two.
It's going to get really interesting from here on, though... :D

Bhinica's death was sad. I sensed that with not much persuasion that Solaufein could have led him to the light.
Solaufein's nostalgia for the sight and sound of his own kind was heartbreaking. It really brings home how much he has given up.
| anesor chapter 6 . 12/24/2009
I felt sorry for Deekin, and even a bit for Bhinica when he died. The existing cultural links, even if dormant, are definitely maaking for a richer tale. Nice chapter!
| anesor chapter 5 . 12/24/2009
Eww, that sounded more sleazy than fey. I really felt for Solaufein. I'm glad she's left behind.
| BronxWench chapter 6 . 12/24/2009
Solaufein's hunger for the company of his own people was a perfect note in this chapter. To be alone among surfacers for three years, despised simply because he is drow, has to be wearing. Of course, drow being drow, treachery was only to be expected. Now, of course, I wonder what Solaufein will make of the Seer, a female who is drow but without much of the malice of her people.
Beautifully done! :)

Interesting encounter. At first I thought the boys were going to add a naked faun to their odd party. Their personalities are really coming out, and Haer'Dalis and Solaufein are quite opposites, but no so much so that they can't sustain a deep friendship.
Yeah, I'll bet HD goes which ever way the wind blows. Cue the porn music.
The boys may pay for Solaufein's attack on the grig. Not that it wasn't deserved, but I get the feeling they're being set up.
