OH PLEASE CONTINUE!
| Lord of Tuft chapter 8 . 10/7/2013
I am going to be naïve and hope against hope that you'll update this (even though it's been three years since the last update. I never thought about shipping Coraline and the Cat; when I began reading this it was because I loved the Cat in "Coraline" and wanted to read something more about him. I am glad to say that I am enjoying this more than I had expected. I really hope you will update this story because it's just getting interesting and I want to know what's going to happen!

It's been a really interesting adventure! Your imagination is truly amazing to have come up with something like this.
Hope to read more soon.
| Woodswolf chapter 1 . 5/19/2012
This is really awesome.
It appears, however, that you will never receive my praise, as you are dead. I don't mind the most, except for the fact that this will never be finished.
| Rainfire of Riverclan chapter 8 . 10/27/2011

| BruisedSmile chapter 8 . 4/9/2011
I love this story, beautifully written and very engaging. I love the world you've created, the OCs in it and the history and detail you've given the story. The saracasm and humour made me laugh and smile, and the fluff...well, we need MORE of that! Hope you update soon!

| SanyoshoSajira chapter 3 . 1/5/2011
My favorite chapter thusfar is the first one. After that, it got kind of boring. Still, I gave it a chance as soon as I sensed the direction the story was taking. If you're wondering why the number of reviews you were getting tapered down, it's because most of the details you've incorporated are irrelevant to the reader. Also, you aren't thinking about the elements in Coraline that made it such a box office hit. Common themes in Coraline were the cat's silence until crises, inter-family conflict, and danger. Lots of danger. Would Coraline truly find a way back? Would Coraline come back despite an enemy guarding the only portal back? By stating explicitly that Coraline would return within inconsequential temporal boundaries, you've taken the air out of the tires. It's all very well as the author to intend for Coraline to go back, but no fun to say it. Wasn't Coraline's return more worthwhile when she had to fight for it? Does she even want to come back when the other world is so tempting and her human family's just going to ignore her some more for their jobs? Now that I think about it, why aren't Coraline's parents making irritating comments to their daughter about her future or really get on her case about her midnight rendezvous with Wybie? Pre-existing family tension might be a factor that again causes Coraline to delay her return to the real world. So, you wrote out the danger and the conflict. Now you've got the Cat being forthcoming with information, so much that I wonder if his real job in Faerie is to be a tour guide. The Cat in the movie may have been on earth, but he had his reasons for not talking. And he did things that Coraline did not like until he said few words to justify his actions. I'm sure he's very sarcastic, but why couldn't he be sarcastic with helpful hints embedded in his statements as per the movie? Shouldn't there be a notable strain on their relationship? He is a species dominant to hers; it's a total power switch from when he was a Cat subjected to human attention. You know how Coraline reacts to authority figures.
As to the character of Coraline, she's bossy and demanding and really likable to the viewers but rather dreadful or neutral to other characters. I was faintly disappointed that she didn't put up more of a fuss to explore outside the castle, especially the gardens. I think she would try to be diplomatic to royalty but then sort of offend in a way that reflects poorly on the Cat (more and more strain on their relationship). While I can appreciate the reasons that Coraline wanted her room close to the Cat's, I didn't expect the Cat to be a limitless source of information on culture, people, and politics. The Cat's only told her what she needed to know, and toyed with her when she didn't strictly have to know a thing. A minor stock character could have done all that for you. Or Coraline herself, by "researching." By research, I mean cornering a weaker creature than herself and pumping them for information no matter where they have to be. Plus, whatever their relationship on Earth was, the Cat said it himself: "I don't need this." For someone to be exiled to 20 slow earth years with no magic or entertainment (besides rats and Wybie) at his disposal, I find it unlikely that he wasn't raring to catch up with his true comrades or a possible love interest (competition for Coraline). He doesn't need Coraline. So they wouldn't necessarily need to be around each other in Faerie... unless there is something between them.
Last but dreadfully important point I want to reiterate: Coraline is in Faerie. In a realm not restricted by early natural death (via malnourishment, starvation, plague, cancer, heart disease), where are the parties and the merriment? The subjects live such a morbidly long time that they need entertainment. They need round-about-merry-go-round ways of doing that which takes more time and thought to fill up their crazy lifespans. I give you props for racking your mind for interesting characters, but you've made them too human, too soft, too linear. If the Beldam likes her games, can you imagine a whole population who live on sport and mischief? And who's to say that eating children is necessarily a frowned upon thing in Faerie? Plenty of human children stolen and exchanged with wretched changelings. Can you imagine what sort of Queen could reign in this chaos?
Again, Coraline is a 17-year-old woman in Faerie, unprotected by magic, without a friend or respected guardian, and only gifted in her cleverness and her ability to deceive (as seen with Beldam). Suppose a total brute armed with magic feels like ravaging her at a party on a whim, he could do it since she is of no importance in the Queen's court. Coraline would need to learn survival. She could relearn the dangers of a world that's too bright and too perfect and never the way it seems. A world where she doesn't have rights because those are denied to humans. She could be hunted for sport, bought as a broodmare or enslaved to perform nasty chores or forced to entertain the nobility. And then the Cat is the only sane element in Faerie, so she needs him as she did in the Other World. She'd have to try to get the Cat's attention (and his subsequent attention), and I don't believe he'd give up a chance to tease her about it.
Also, where be the menfolk? Why isn't there any violence in the way of entertainment? No boxing, sparring, petty bickering that results in the throwing of petty curses or magic tricks? No joking or ribaldry or drunken or loony merrymaking? All the better to play up the coming war or whatever event you've contrived.
Who is Sereno, really? Does he have no loves, no kin, no property, or reputation to defend? For Coraline to take the credit for finishing the Beldam is a dangerous truth. What's Soreno's protection over Coraline worth if he needed a child to complete his warrior's task? And then to be incompetent enough to permit her entrance into Faerie when she's essentially worthless? Bad news bears, methinks. Supposing he claims her as his definitively, there goes that strain on their relationship again.
Think about it.
