| shazzili chapter 28 . 6/6
Hi, I loved your story and thought it was absolutely brilliant! However, I did want to address the history of Pre WWII Germany that you wrote at the end of the last chapter. I believe that while pre-WWII Germany was absolutely destroyed economically following the war, this was not the main factor in Hitler's rise. In fact from 1923-29, after a period of great economic turmoil, the Golden Years of the Weimar Period began. These years in fact were a period of great economic growth and a period of cultural growth for Germany, with Berlin almost replacing Paris as the centre of art. Furthermore, during this period a great number of German scientists won Nobel Prizes. The terms of the Versailles Treaty were also renegotiated so Germany didn't have to pay money back if they were unable to afford it and there was a thawing of relations with France and the other Allies. Furthermore, America even provided short term loans to Germany as seen with the Young Plan, which greatly boosted economic growth and allowed the economy to flourish. Germany was even allowed into the League of Nations. During this time, Hitler and the Nazi Party literally became the butt of jokes and most didn't take them seriously. However, the Great Depression in 1929 (in my opinion at least) was incredibly harsh upon Germany as the short term loans which they had taken from America suddenly were required to be paid back and Germany simply did not have the money as their economy was living on borrowed money meaning that the economy crashed. Hitler's rise can be heavily attributed to these economic issues, however other factors such as a lack of democratic tradition must also be considered as throughout the whole of the Weimar Republic's lifetime, it was constantly undermined by the army and by conservatives who wanted a return to the old ways. Many people also despised the Versailles Treaty and the cooperation of the Weimar Government with foreign countries was something they viewed as a 'betrayal' of Germany. Sorry for the history lesson, but what I mean to state is that the rise of Hitler cannot be purely attributed to the destruction of the German economy by WWII and the failure of the Allies to assist Germany as in fact they did assist Germany.
