|Reviews for The Price of Truth|
| Withdrawn chapter 1 . 4/11/2011
That was lovely and beautiful and absolutely dead on. You nailed the characters and the process, and managed the perfectly semi-otherwordly feel of xxxHolic, where what is real is real, and what is Dream may be Real. Seriously, you NAILED it. I loved the imagery as well; the spirits of death and murder and negative energy and the odd mist surrounding Shinichi and most off all Shinichi himself, the way that he's always there as a ghost, standing behind and over Conan's/his own shoulder, and it's brilliant as a visual metaphor for his situation. Ran was dead on as well, and I loved to bits Yuuko's description of her strength at the end, because it's not something about Ran that's normally mentioned, and it's something that most certainly deserves praise, even if it may be a flaw. My one problem, and only problem, is this: this is a crossover, and I love crossovers, always have. Something about them calls to me and just the inherent idea of two heroes (worlds/fates/dreams/everything that makes series X and Y good and wonderful) meeting fills me with excitement. But this didn't quite feel like a crossover. This felt more like a xxxHolic fic (though, were copyright laws not what they are it'd fit perfectly as a chapter) meant to fit into the continuity of xxxHolic as a chapter, which guest stared the characters of Detective Conan as the Customers of the Week. . . and while that's lovely and you made it WORK, and work well at that, it's not quite a crossover to me. It gives us a (very) short term look at what these events meant for the Detective Conan characters, but not a way to fit them into that story, whereas the xxxHolic side could be declared Canon and fit seamlessly into that continuity if someone desired. I guess what I'm really getting at is that the Detective Conan side is left feeling unfinished, and that's kind of. . . distressing. Still, I liked the story overall, and while I only half loved the ending, the story itself was a phenomenal read, and really something enjoyable.

this was utterly beautiful.
the pace, the length of the details slowly wormed in, from the tengu form hovering over Conan to Ran's wish and Yuuko's words, the spirits of the dead asking for justice, Watanuki... everything was worked together seamlessly in a perfect narration.
it felt true to both the series, working so well that it's amazing how everything fits together. you've truly a talent at writing, and the characterization was also very very good.
it has been truly a pleasure to read this, so thank you for writing and sharing it. :)

All I can say is that I'm very impressed!
| DarkBeta chapter 1 . 8/4/2010
Not familiar enough with XXXholic to judge Watanuki and Yuuko, but they certainly *seem* in character! Wonderful view of Ran and Conan and Shinichi from the outside (and as Watanuki says, "I see things really differently from other people").
Wait, if Conan hadn't run into Watanuki, would he have caught up to the killer and prevented the 2nd murder? Or *been* the 2nd murder? But there is only the inevitable . . . .
"There is only one truth . . . ." That's it, strange oba-san. Conan's taking you in for copyright infringement!
Thank you for a wonderful cross-over!

When I first read this I hadn't even heard of xxxHOLiC...but afterwards I had a really hard time getting it out of my head. There was something about it that amused me...
So I totally went out on a limb and bought the entire first season of the series on DVD, and I kind of wanted to say thanks. :3 I love it now, and it's thanks to this brilliant crossover...
So now that I actually know the characters of Yuuko and Watanuki I feel I can give a truly sufficient review. (Kinda)
-coughs- Characters were in character. Watanuki is kind of hard to capture (I would imagine -.-u) because he can be so calm and collected...but then he can also be a complete and total spaz as well.
Neat theory about Shinichi and his smokyness...I also liked the spirit that follows him about. Makes his run-ins with murder make sense.
Beautifully written. The great thing about xxxHOLiC is that you can make little one chapter stories that are crossovers pretty easily.

O_O *is shocked speechless* That was GREAT! The whole Shinichi ghost mimicking everything Conan does seriously made me laugh so hard when I imagined him doing the 'kiddy act'! XD This is an excellent fic!

Way good! I loved the blending of the two worlds and all the in-characterness. Very well-done.

Wow. This is my first time reading one of your stories, but I can already bet you're a fantastic writer. You've shown great creativity in bringing both universes together in such a short time and bringing some sense of closure or a lesson to both. The whole idea of the mirror image of Shinichi behind Conan and the peace he bestows upon the dead was a great idea - and even better through Watanuki's eyes.
I could keep listing a bunch of minute details that made this wonderful or simply fess up and say this story gave me pause and in fact enhanced my own perceptions of both series, not to mention my day. Keep up the great work.

That was eye-opening.

I ... I think I'm in love with your stories. I found you through this one, read your other Detective Conan stories, and then checked out "White Feather" and realised that I'd seen it before (God knows how long ago, I don't even remember anything about except the main character's design, which I really like) and so here I am, back again to review like a good little reader.
I like everything about "The Price of Truth", but the two things that stand out the most are 1) the "voice" or "tone", if you will, of the writing - it's very thoughtful and well-paced; and 2) the exchange of the truth for Ran's cell phone, which was both appropriate and (by me at least) unexpected.
Anyway, bless you both. I haven't enjoyed a Detective Conan fic as much as I've enjoyed yours in a long time. :)

Wonderful, although I wish I could've seen more of what happened between Conan and Ran. Someone with your caliber writing would make a great fic about how the secret gets out, ne?
Great job, perfectly in character and the mood matches everything quite nicely.

I loved this! Not only because it was a crossover, and crossovers are generally awesome. But it was filled with good plot (it was a good plot .), characters dancing around each other and what they don't know (Shinichi/Conan glancing warily at Watanuki whenever he said something he shouldn't know, Watanuki talking around the fact that he could see ghosts), different views of the same thing (the man-made curse, Shinichi thinking Watanuki was a good detective) and was all round a marvelous cohesion.
Thanks for this.
