| wryter501 chapter 49 . 11/25/2015
another consideration. how many innocent people sacrifice in the near future when bayard cracks back down on magic? and yeah, how many magical enemies are being created? how much harder for arthur to change his stance later, if he's firming it now?
and, oh dear. alienating morgause and ruining her efforts... yeah, gonna regret that, i'm afraid...
| wryter501 chapter 48 . 11/25/2015
this is... pretty awful. i understand the reasoning but... what happened to, do what's right and damn the consequences? surely bayard could toe the line to avoid war - which changing nothing in a kingdom so far away that uther surely never visits - and uther would really go to war over another king's in-law?... idk. i don't see a problem with arthur being more honest and letting chips fall where they may. too much of this sort of attempted manipulation of the future can so totally undermine the present that the future is that much harder to achieve when the opportunity comes...

i love yvain! i wanted him in on the secret! i suppose as 'well-kept' as the secret about him and morgana? :D
| wryter501 chapter 46 . 11/25/2015
nice to see that morgana does get around to apologizing for her behavior. and selfishness, i suppose. but she's upset that merlin's put arthur's happiness ahead of hers, and - still doesn't question what merlin wants, and /he's/ not going to be able to have, either. isn't that what love is, though? putting your partner's wants and needs first, as they do for you? it's not about what they give you, or at least it shouldn't be...
| wryter501 chapter 45 . 11/25/2015
i kind of thought lancelot was self-banished to avoid the argument between arthur & uther - so i missed where uther was okay about lancelot coming back? i thought he was going to be coming and going in secret along their underground railroad...
hm. i suppose morgana can take care of herself with magic, and arthur can't... still, it's got to feel funny to them, maybe all three of them, that this is merlin's instinct...
| wryter501 chapter 92 . 11/25/2015
i get it, i really do, how she feels. but she's not considering anyone's pov but her own... whether or not it's /killing/ him, this, too... he's just acting more grown-up about it.
| wryter501 chapter 29 . 11/25/2015
interesting. i've read merlin having to take the abuse since his magic is still secret and he's only a manservant - but here, his position is elevated, but the magic is still a secret. he's /got/ to answer the challenge somehow, but obviously couldn't put on armor and pick up a sword... it's nice that you had him verbally knock mellum down, and only by pointing out the truth. calling the bluff, even. :)
| wryter501 chapter 2 . 11/25/2015
i like how you hint at the comparison of camelot's court to other kingdoms. the high standard of chivalry we've been taught from legend - but then after all are left to assume from the series that mostly it's the same everywhere... i like merlin shaming the knights into better behavior by reminding them of that ideal that they strive for...
| wryter501 chapter 36 . 11/25/2015
that love triangle, though... does arthur not think of how lancelot will feel, having to be in closer association with the woman he loves, not being able to have her? increasing his temptation?
| wryter501 chapter 3 . 11/25/2015
i did wonder what merlin's 'pretend' love letter said... only, now i'm not so sure it was 'pretend' after all... ;)
| wryter501 chapter 91 . 11/25/2015
this is all right with me. that much optimism (not to mention the responsibility!) has to be exhausting... i'm content with merlin feeling overwhelmed, sometimes. poor boy.
| wryter501 chapter 68 . 11/25/2015
(if you thought season 3 was bad, how did you feel about season 5?)
and this... mm, i don't know. i guess in big-picture terms, i respect merlin for his concern for arthur's reign and connections and the people they're trying to save until arthur has the authority to address the issue of legal magic. but at the same time, i think it's quite ooc for in-series merlin to support arthur marrying anyone else...
although. i'm aware of my canon-pairings, happy-ending inclinations, and i tend to make arthur&gwen work, the way they never did in legend, so i suppose arthur&gwen anything-but-perfect-bliss /is/ more true...
| wryter501 chapter 4 . 11/25/2015
merlin can reign morgana in, only so long as she still wants him to... when the 'honeymoon' phase is over, that's when the real work of a relationship begins... loving someone in spite of the faults you no longer find exciting or adorably rebellious...
so much for being circumspect while olaf and vivian are around... ;)
| wryter501 chapter 90 . 11/25/2015
premeditated murder is never excusable as self-defense...
and merlin. has got to learn to work with morgana's personality rather than trying to change or stifle or whatever... never worked for uther, did it. she has to be able to be satisfied when she comes to him for answers, or she'll stop coming to /him/... and, he's going to involve her rival, but keep her out of it? merlin seriously does not understand women... :(
| wryter501 chapter 89 . 11/25/2015
then again, merlin should be more understanding of her nature - and this was once, where she didn't actually act or intend to... it happened unconsciously, in her sleep. i think he ought to have been more supportive of the obvious feelings of guilt that would follow, help her to learn to control, be more patient, etc... b/c now, they'll never know if he might have found the solution naturally. forever after, this incident will be - he was ineffective and she was criminally reckless. :(
