Reviews for Let the Devil In
fanficequalskilig chapter 1 . 8/16/2013
You are astonishing. You turned the seemingly indestructible video game characters human. I felt their pain. I became one with their desperations. The only thing I didn't feel is their exhaustion, for this masterpiece took it all away.
Plus, I absolutely loved the EllisxNick pairing here. :"
Good job! Let someone proofread it for you next time, so the grammar nazis won't come and get you (don't fret; there were just a few mistakes here). But, heck, they wouldn't even care. They'd get mesmerized with this artwork, before anything else.
On a last note, I rarely give reviews, let alone long ones. This speaks for itself. ;)
Rubywoundz chapter 1 . 3/24/2012
This fanfic is, without a doubt, the best I have ever read from any source. You used the events from the game to create something truly great. The characters grew together as the world fell apart, and both were executed with incredible skill. Please never stop writing.
starkmaddness chapter 1 . 2/24/2011
Christ. That was one beautiful beast of a story. Incredibly well-written, the characterizations just felt so true to me, from Ellis' easy-going, can't-shut-him-up nature, to the down-to-earth-ness of Rochelle, Coach's maturity, and Nick's jaded yet so very human personality. It was so enjoyable reading this, not that the situation these four were in was in any way rainbows and sunshine, but that it was damn exhilarating seeing these characters I had played and listened to come to life on the page/softly-glowing-computer-screen. Ha, selfish of me but I wish their journey was longer so I could read more of this. Thank you for writing.
FantasiaStory chapter 1 . 2/4/2011
It's been a long time since I made a review, but as thanks for such a brilliant read - I just had to.

{ Apologies to those who haven't read the story yet, may have spoilers ahead. I recommend you don't skim through the reviews until you have read the story. )

This fan-fiction as a whole was just beautiful. It was such a long story that I thought I wouldn't be able to last to the end, but I soon found myself three-quarters through the story and each paragraph left me with the curiosity on what was to come after. Weird as it may sound, I think the sex scene had a 'magic' of its own - It wasn't the kind of scene that a reader would find to be a total turn-on, but rather, I personally feel that it conveyed the message of the survivors need to be loved, the comfort of knowing that there's 'somebody there'. After being stuck in a zombie apocalypse with only three other strangers to talk to, it's not unrealistic to imagine them going: "Screw it, I'm lonely and I'm losing my sanity, let's have sex."

Most - if not all - the characters seem to be IC. I can just picture them doing what you set them out to do. There are scenes where the characters just seem to be hanging on the thread of life and death, like how 'Coach knows it's very, very possible that he is going to die.' And those are the moments where I catch my breath, or go 'Oh no, what's going to happen next?' The rain in one of the scenes adds to the atmosphere, despite what seems to be a life-threatening scene between the Witch and the others, your last sentence ends with the description of the rain being 'soft' and the air being 'quiet', in contrast to the situation - but somehow managing to blend in so well with it.

Each pair of characters have their moments - Coach and Rochelle, Ellis and Coach, Ellis/Rochelle, Rochelle/Nick, Ellis/Nick, etcetc. And I love the interactions to little bits and pieces.

I felt really bad for Nick and some points, but I guess that's how the story's supposed to go. There was Ellis's change in attitude towards Nick after finding out that his sexual preferences were not what he had thought they were, which is a really common situation in life when some one gets out of the closet. I enjoyed the stories about Keith's-Thrilling-Adventures, hell, there's even a video on youtube that has about a five minute or more length video of Ellis ranting on and on about his stories. The outcome of Ellis and Nick at the end was really sweet - And since they survived it, does it mean that Ellis has to let Nick do what he said he would let him do just before they threw the pipebomb? Haha.

I was kind of surprised that Rochelle and Coach came back for them at the end. It was a Not-So-Happy-But-Happy ending ( I mean, with Rochelle missing half a nipple and fingers and everything ) and I think it ended the fan-fiction with a magnificent touch. The last few lines really got to me, especially the last one,

' The fading sun bleeds over the sky '

And I guess the word 'bleed' really got to everyone. It wasn't something like ' The fading sun glowed over the sky ' or ' The fading sun shimmered over the sky ' but your choice of words really affected everyone. Of course, now that they're saved we're all just hoping for the best.

I can hardly find a bad thing to say about this. Maybe just a teeny weeny hard-to-notice grammatical errors here and there, but other than that, I have to thank you for this satisfying story. I never expected to stay up until 2:27AM in the morning when I have an early start tomorrow - Chinese New Year is going on over here and everything. And I never expected to write such a ridiculously long review ( At least, for me ). What happened to one paragraph? Continue writing stories such as these, I believe that there's really something in your writing that touches people. Kudos. (:

Gnomes and Little Mermaid FTW.
LadyBiscuit chapter 1 . 1/21/2011

NeverGoodbyeRoxas chapter 1 . 10/7/2010
Hands down, the best Left4Dead fic on this site. I absolutely loved everything about this story here-the plot, the pacing, the description, the dialogue...I don't think there was a single imperfection. The characters spoke brilliantly through their dialogue and actions, somehow transcending their somewhat 2-D depictions by other authors. Yeah, I know that Ellis likes to tell Keith stories, but you've managed to say something significant about him through this certain idiosynchrasy of his. You've made me think about why characters are the way they are. Is Ellis actually straight? Was Keith more than just a friend? Why does Nick hate Ellis' stories anyway? You've given them depth and unity. I don't think I've read another L4D fic that emphasized them as a family as much as yours did without explicitly writing it in a single statement devoid of emotion and posterity. I also loved how you minimalized the fight scenes, cutting out the excess until we're left with just the raw pain. People don't seem to understand that with endless description, even violence becomes bland. You let us sit there, uncomfortable with the fact that we can see a man's tears because he's been hurt, smell the illness lingering in the air, and wonder if anyone is going to keep their sanity.

Favorite scene: Rochelle and Ellis in the bathroom up to Nick asking how Ellis was. That was heartbreaking. I never really liked the Nick/Ellis pairing, but it didn't change my feelings of sympathy for the guy. Not only is his love unrequited, it almost seems impossible because of his sex. Futility always gets to me.
Dakota chapter 1 . 9/6/2010
This story legitimately made me cry at the end. I love the way you built the story around the struggling of each character as they become more and more exhausted and hurt. I *love* it.
pagelupin chapter 1 . 7/21/2010
This was fuckin' amazing! I love it.
textbomb chapter 1 . 7/1/2010
Woahhh man, this story is just amazing. The ending gave me these chills, you know, when you listen to a song that blows your mind out. You made it feel so damn real, the whole scenario of these characters going to a zombie apocalypse. :D

pfft look at my lame review :C

but honestly, I love you for writing this

and for dropping some Nick/Ellis into it. ;B
Seren-chan chapter 1 . 6/16/2010
I had been directed to this fic as a recommendation and I must say, I am not disappointed. This showed what I like to see when I read.

I think what really sold this fic was the realistic portrayal of the characters. I could honestly see them as real people. The contrast of the strengths as well as their vulnerabilities. And to see them at the end, broken but alive, brought me to tears.

In short, thank you and great work.
