While the main character here is definitely Hermione, this is largely the tale of Severus Snape, stumbling through the dark, elbowing various people in sensitive emotional places before FINALLY lighting that candle and admitting there were others in the room for whom he cares a great deal. The man revealed is, as always, amazingly complex and beautiful in his pain.
i“the gods did not desire flawless souls, but great ones. I think that very darkness is where the greatness grows from, as flowers from the soil. I am not sure, in fact, if greatness can bloom without it.”
― Lois McMaster Bujold, Paladin of Souls/i
Snape's soil is exceptionally dark.
The last chapter could have probably ended better without the great hall scene. Maybe a nice tie-up that allowed Snape to assist in the horcrux madness and brilliantly General through the last battle, or better still spy Slytherin it so it doesn't happen at all, and Voldemort's Universe ends not with a bang, but a whimper.
The very last scene drove a clown car through the opera at the height of the great emotional pay off. It did make me chuckle evilly. I can't say I hated it, it just didn't flow. Like anchovies in chocolate mousse. I can appreciate how a massive project like this can overgrow itself like a overgrown tumor and sap the strength of its writer to the point of "enough," effectively killing itself. So please, dear author, as I think you may agree a bit, understand that I still would recommend this to any reader who is looking for that special HGSS with Animagi and HPDM loveliness.
