| MashiroAzuki chapter 10 . 5/5
As if the sorting hat can even joke about sending a kid to the wrong house! I can't believe this! BUT ITS BLOODY BRILLIANT I HAVE TO READ MORE UGHHHHHH
| Guest chapter 10 . 4/25
How isn't everyone's first thought of a sorting hat about the hat's own self awareness.
You are so good at writing the perspective of a smart child, and I love the new contrast Hermione is providing. But more importantly, generations are going to be haunted by "just kidding," coming out of the sorting hat's mouth.
| mikewj93 chapter 10 . 4/20
best. prank. ever. you evil, magnificent person.
| Guest chapter 10 . 4/17
OH HE CAN DO THAT BECAUSE HE GOT A SENSE OF HUMOR DIDN'T HE?
(By the way I love this and every thing about this and thank you so so much)

| Anatia chapter 10 . 11/4/2016
Thaaaat baaaastard Sorting Hat.:D Kidding.. Kidding with such important thing... HHeheheheeee!:D Amazingly irritating situation:D:D
| TheDarkMan19 chapter 10 . 10/20/2016
I tried. It's a very interesting theory, and the technical detail you put into the story is impressive, but your writing style just isn't appealing to me. Not a critique just a personal sensibility. impressive story either way sorry I'm unable to remain interested in it.
| angeltrin1 chapter 10 . 10/7/2016
I have to say, you have caused me to laugh hysterically many times, so far. I can't wait for the rest of the story! (BTW) I love your Harry!
| Rambling Drabble chapter 10 . 9/20/2016
1. This chapter was difficult to analyze. Half way through, and all I got is a wide smile at Harry's major "dark lord" plans. Other than that, the science and thought are somewhat obscuring any smbolism or foreshadowing. Very difficult indeed.
2. Oohh, so Harry starts getying over instantly using clever ideas the moment he gets them in THIS chapter? No wonder he drives Draco and Hermoine so crazy. Especially Draco.
3. Finally! Found the symbolism WITHIN the conversation, PERTAINING to science. So Harry KNOWS that something bad will happen if he doesn't chase his full potential, if he sits back and lets others strive for greatness. Ignoring the foreshadowing, I can now see the parallels with the field of AI. The field itself is destined for "greatness", so we need the greatest minds to lead it in the right direction.
4. (Wipes tear from eye) Ah, Sorting Hat. Your prank gets me every time. I've got a feeling your creator (Less Wrong) mostly made that scene because it was fun to do, in addition to opening a few more doors, plot-wise. The schools reaction is just golden; I only wish I could have seen Dumbledore's as well.
| blood-doll-aishiteru chapter 10 . 9/15/2016
"Just kidding" I'm sure that hat almost killed half the hall of heart attack
| rickyrules1998 chapter 10 . 9/13/2016
Bruh... That's just rude
| SilentSnowLeopardNinja chapter 10 . 9/4/2016
That hat was brutal.
| sunset oasis chapter 10 . 9/2/2016
I'm totally amazed with their conversation ... it's so enjoyable to read. And the last part ... I shocked for a moment and then got another surprise immediately, it's such a roller coaster ride.
And Severus's reaction is my favorite. XD
| ArtemisKirara7 chapter 10 . 8/30/2016
I LOVE YOU
| Lupinefire chapter 10 . 8/28/2016
This has been the single most interesting sorting conversation I have ever read. I love the idea that the hat is a mirror of the individual wearing it and that the students ultimately sort themselves.
| Feathers chapter 10 . 8/28/2016
| JonV0 chapter 10 . 8/18/2016
4 chapters later, and I'm being steadily drawn farther in. Gotta admit, that was an insanely clever way to interpret the Sorting Hat's magic. Most fans assume that it is at least mostly sentient instead of what is essentially a magic computer program on a thumb drive being plugged in and run using the kid's brain as the CPU and their memory as, well, the memory.
And yet, your system makes just as much sense with the context provided, especially given the dialogue (or would that be monologue since it did most of the talking?) it had with Harry when he was being sorted in canon.
| x-mariaa chapter 10 . 7/31/2016
Did you seriously just make the sorting hat say that at a such a serious, impacting moment? Honestly, if anybody oughta be kidding at this moment, it ought to be you kidding me. This is grossly OOC and unrealistic.
I actually think that your Harry would fit quite well in Slytherin and before you had come with the ridiculous, "Just kidding, haha. It's Ravenclaw!" skit, I had actually thought that it was the perfect place for him to go. I'd been anticipating him being sorted into Slytherin, actually.
He's ambitious, he's cunning, he's manipulative, and certainly has an everlgrowing thirst for power. These are the things that the house of Slytherin is supposed to be about. You've got you're view all skywed. Slytherins are most certainly NOT all evil how you have made them out to be, and that house isn't all about that.
| Meatball42 chapter 10 . 7/27/2016
I have read this before, but every time I read the end of this chapter I want to set both the hat and this story on fire.
| AstoriaGrace chapter 10 . 7/27/2016
Aw man! I was seriously hoping for Slytherin! Regardless, this is the best FF that I have ever read.
| Squarekiddo chapter 10 . 7/6/2016
Honestly think that was abit to much.
| Nagamoon chapter 10 . 6/25/2016
| myafroatemydog chapter 10 . 6/23/2016
This chapter was perfect
| Reader chapter 10 . 6/13/2016
Awesome, well-written, and clever chapter!
| YungMoolah chapter 10 . 6/5/2016
HAHAHAHAH Sorting Hat you sly bastard
| DaynetheGamer chapter 10 . 5/31/2016
This fic is truly amazing. I've just read the first 10 chapters and at times it really had me going. Buuut this level of science and it all blending with magic is just way past my 15 year old level of comprehension and I have even developed a headache from trying. So for now im gonna drop it and maybe have another go at a later date lol.
| sabba5600 chapter 10 . 5/30/2016
my god that was way to funny, the sorting hat is an asshole. simply beautiful.
| Amylia chapter 10 . 5/28/2016
"You sly little BASTARD"
D I love it.
| Happy chapter 10 . 5/22/2016
The conversation with himself is just Wonderful! And you got me at Slytherin - I think I stopped breathing there for a bit
| TheLittleRoguex chapter 10 . 5/14/2016
Just kidding !
| Mab's Mad Fiddler chapter 10 . 5/10/2016
OMG the sorting hat is such a troll! That was fricking amazing.
| MountainLord-92 chapter 10 . 5/6/2016
I have been struggling to empathise with your version of Harry, being clever is one thing but I don't see why you feel the need to go so far. You don't have to be so clever that you become a socially inept arsehole who feels the need to belittle everybody else to be in ravenclaw. This strikes me as a fundamental misunderstanding of what the houses truly represent. Your little dig at Rowling for not putting Hermione in ravenclaw is uncalled for, and again fundamentally fails to acknowledge what the houses represent, she is clever and studies a lot, yes, but that is not the same as being wise.
But boy do you redeem yourself here in this chapter, finally Harry is put in his place and you acknowledge that everybody has the potential to be in any house, it is the choices that are as important as what is truly inside. The exchange here was brilliantly tense, even if your synopsis does spoil the fact he will get into Ravenclaw anyway.
I should also acknowledge that this is not the first point that you start being balanced, up until now you have demonstrated that gryffindors can be flawed individuals as much as the rest and that Hufflepuffs are not as useless as the books would have us believe. It's also clear you are going to shine a more sympathetic light on Slytherin. My above criticism is mostly nitpicking.
| gi-freakazoid chapter 10 . 5/1/2016
I never would have imagined the workings and the physics that goes into the working of the sorting hat. I was shocked when Harry was sorted into Slytherin... but was changed into Ravenclaw. Could the hat do that?
| Guest chapter 10 . 4/30/2016
Its really much simpler, ask yourself, do you desire good or evil? intention above all else. We make mistakes, shit happens, The world is not perfect, if it was we would know it and it is even possible we wouldnt exist if it was perfect. Therefor, intention above all else. Ofcourse there comes a problem if you lack the ability to be honest with yourself and thus you might claim you want good even though deep, deep down you know you want evil because you are an ass. You can even change my little sentence "intention above all else" into "source above all else" fi you want to use it elsewhere. Its quite nice and i feel a silly pride for it that id rather not.
| Your Mother chapter 10 . 4/26/2016

| TotallyNotThatGuy chapter 10 . 4/16/2016
Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha! I love this so much!
| PrinceMittens chapter 10 . 4/16/2016
I just remembered why I enjoyed this so much. The humor is simply exquisite and perfectly suited to my tastes; I burst out laughing like I did the first time when the Sorting Hat sorted Harry. Oh Gods! XD
You deserve all the love, Eliezor.
| Guestamazing chapter 10 . 4/11/2016
For a second I got scared there in the end. Whew!
| ReadingFreak1098 chapter 10 . 4/4/2016
This is amazing! The Sorting Hat hat has never been imagined this way... I think..
| kaitlyn.l.francis chapter 10 . 3/14/2016
Never. Never in my entire life have I laughted as loud at a book as I have reading this chapter. This is not an exaduration. You're a genius.
| ScrewballBRaine chapter 10 . 2/19/2016
"Juuust Kidding" xD. I keep bursting into laughter and I am irritating my mother :)
| LilyIsAwesomerThanYou chapter 10 . 2/17/2016
This killed me... Actually killed me.
In other news, I like your idea of how the Sorting Hat works. I never gave it much thought, but a mirror-like reflection of children's minds does make a lot of sense, and it explains why the kids can refuse to go into certain houses even if they're best suited for them. Just thought it was cool
| Winter Fox of Summer chapter 10 . 2/16/2016
Well, that was certainly unique.
| Guest chapter 10 . 1/29/2016
So I was wrong, but also kind of right. Glad the hat was kidding about that last bit.
| Nixus-Hiver chapter 10 . 1/21/2016
| richierich chapter 10 . 1/18/2016
The scene between Harry and the sorting hat was fantastic. As were the previous ones with Drako and Hermione. I'm now willing to assume that you are incapable of writing bad material and that all further compliments along these lines will be simply redundant. Even so, I've got to say this is great stuff. So entertaining. I keep reading whole sections over just for the enjoyment. I was just dying, trying to figure out where Harry was doing to be placed. And that last joke by the sorting hat just blew me away!
| Lilyzinha chapter 10 . 1/6/2016
Oh my...this was perfect! the hat is just kidding

| alfamky chapter 10 . 12/17/2015
...this defies my whole hp reality lolll just kidding!
| WatchingTheWatchman chapter 10 . 12/6/2015
I love that explanation of how the Sorting Hat works! It makes way more sense that it essentially allows the children to sort themselves, rather than the implied explanation in the books, where it seems weirdly omniscient for no good reason.
I also love seeing Harry finally get a taste of his own medicine, and being reminded that, despite his intelligence, he doesn't know everything.
| Guest chapter 10 . 12/5/2015
(I just finished the sorting chapter btw, that was my reaction. I felt you'd enjoy it).
| Xidaer chapter 10 . 12/3/2015
Eee!i love the sorting hat, that prankster piece of cloth. :D Thank you for writing!
| Cobalt027 chapter 10 . 11/29/2015
Haha I fell out of my chair laughing. if this keep up I might have to stop reading so the class will stop looking at me funny.
| The Anguished One chapter 10 . 11/23/2015
Harry's intelligence made the Sorting Hat gain sentience... that is awesome. Such an interesting conversation. No shock that Harry could be worse than any other Dark Lord though. Nice seeing the Sorting Hat actually have a sense of humor, including announcing he would be Slytherin. So he'll be in Ravenclaw. It suits him, that's for sure.
| that guy chapter 10 . 11/15/2015
The last couple of sentences were gold. I nearly gave my cat a heart attack I laughed so hard. Instead she ran into the window and broke it so thanks.
| Gothic Rain chapter 10 . 11/13/2015
LOL I'm laughing so hard right now! That was by far the best sorting I have ever read before! :D
| JumpingToaster chapter 10 . 11/10/2015
Oh I AM going to enjoy this fic. I got distracted from a project by Fallout 4. I got distracted from Fallout 4 by Starcraft 2. I got distracted by Starcraft 2 by this fic... I am so screwed...
| Crack-jouchan chapter 10 . 11/8/2015
WHAT A TROLL. I thought as well that he was destinied for Slytherin, then the Sorting Hat comes up and say JUST KIDDING, RAVENCLAW.
I can imagine Ms McGonagall thinking, 'The hat has never done this before. He's spread his insanity AGAIN'
| Guest chapter 10 . 11/5/2015
| PugTheMagician chapter 10 . 10/16/2015
i reeeeeeally regret not reading this story earlier. this smart allecky humour has had me cackling at random moments in public already and i'm only up to the 10th chapter. i really like harry's parents as they are actually loving. i thought harry's plan to own the wizarding world through wizard-muggle exchange rates was very clever when you ignore the fact that he would have an entire nation of angry goblins after him for cheating them out of their profits. i absolutely loved harry and draco's first meeting and thought his reaction to muggles having reached the moon was just as good. i like that this harry is so knowledgeable as i feel that as well as getting a few chuckles out of him i am also learning as i read. for instance i had never even heard of positive bias before. i look forward to the next 10 chapters
| ShadowLDrago chapter 10 . 10/14/2015
Sorting Hat, you Magnificent Bastard I read your BOOK!
| Gleas chapter 10 . 10/13/2015

*drops a f***-bomb* JEGUS! Sorting Hat self-awareness just... AUUUGH!
| Annalynn Roe chapter 10 . 10/1/2015
Oh, good grief! The second I saw "SLYTHERIN!" I started cracking up, between the tears I glanced down to see the "Just kidding! RAVENCLAW!" And of course started cracking up even more. Then I had the privilege of going back and reading the between and it's a wonder I didn't die right there.
Thank you, thank you very much.
| Good chapter 10 . 9/30/2015
Ive read this whole story once already and im doing it again cause its good.
| P. P. P chapter 10 . 9/12/2015
The Hat should have just thrown him into Gryffindor or Hufflepuff! I like that the Hat trolled everyone at the end though.
| Hiyoshi Ren chapter 10 . 9/9/2015
bad bad sorting hat... bad harry too
| SomeoneKnew chapter 10 . 9/6/2015
OMG I just realised! At the end the first letters of the words are JK! R! Oh my freaking Godric I cannot believe I didn't see it before!
| Jaycie Victory chapter 10 . 9/3/2015
Oh that was genius! I felt every bit of the creeping realisation, the building horror that Harry did... the laughter with which I greeted the last line was as much an explosion of relief as genuine belly-busting mirth. I heart you :D
| daarb123 chapter 10 . 8/13/2015
Good sir, I've only recently started the journey with this truly wonderful work of art that you have created. It's been amazing so far, with you creating a completely different world from Rowling's - your Harry is one of true greatness. Might I ask if you are a scientist yourself? You have a fantastic grasp on everything rational and whatever that could possibly explained with modern science. Harry's internal monologue is the absolute best part of the story.
I was reading on the mobi version of the book but just had to log on here and leave a review after this chapter.
This was probably the greatest battle of wits I've seen written. Ever. Period. True mastery of two great minds duking it out with each other, gracefully expressed and delivered.
Bravo, sir. Though I know you've finished the story, I can't wait to continue on my own journey and view your takes on the world of Harry Potter. I wish you the best in your future endeavors.
| Zyxis chapter 10 . 8/10/2015
YOU HAD ME GOING THERE FOR A MINUTE! I was so worried. XD I was really looking forward to a story that was well written and had Harry in Ravenclaw, and my hopes were crushed and resurrected so many time during this chapter.

| olqueen108 chapter 10 . 7/23/2015

lmfao so much in this part. In my mind I envisioned Dumbledore going "what the fuck?" at the sorting hat making a joke.
| Meilodi chapter 10 . 7/19/2015
Oh my god, I actually laughed out loud at this chapter. Great story, and somehow you have managed to make science hilarious.
| xAmazonWarriorx chapter 10 . 7/13/2015

| hakon2feb chapter 10 . 6/28/2015
Ok, so that was just plain evil... Something i would believe if you did a Naruto/HP crossover where Naruto somehow ended up as the sorting hat. Only that he would probably throw paint bombs and steal people's food as well.
Ravenclaw it is, so i bet Harry and Hermione are both happy... The Weasleys, probably not so much. Hagrid? Pfth! So long as he doesn't end in Slytherin he probably won't care. McGonagall is probably happy that she doesn't have to kill the no-longer-sentient-hat, so there is that :p
Keep up the good work :)
| Angelfirenze chapter 10 . 5/26/2015
Okay, I don't like Harry right now. But, really, I don't know what I would do if I were - oh, wait, I've been Sorted in several RPGs and I get Gryffindor every fricking time even though I can't stand how horrible they are to others...damned integrity. I've been told about that one, too, so maybe several virtual Sortings can actually be on the mark...also, damn you for leading us off the same cliff as everyone in the Great Hall in this chapter.
| PA chapter 10 . 5/16/2015
Wow. Just wow. I guess that's lazy, but what more is there to say? So much drama for the answer we already knew! But well done.
| crotia chapter 10 . 5/6/2015
ahw, I liked him going to Hufflepuff
| Invisiblegirl16 chapter 10 . 4/13/2015
I had seen some art work for this on DA (which is how I found this story), so I already knew that Harry was going to be in Ravenclaw - and then the Sorting Hat said, "Slytherin", and I actually felt my heart skip a beat. Damn that Sorting Hat! Geez . . . (though I bet if it had said Gryffindor, that gasp of horror would've came from McGonagall - and Snape's reaction - ouch!)
| BarbedCaress chapter 10 . 4/10/2015

Gosh dang it hat you little shit. Wow.
| Village-Mystic chapter 10 . 3/21/2015
He made the hat make a joke! Now that's funny. And wow, he really had to argue not to be in Hufflepuff. At least there's a better chance or protecting Luna next year.
| Callian31 chapter 10 . 3/21/2015
I loved the sorting scene!
| hisnhers chapter 10 . 3/14/2015
Jaw dropping ending, then relief and laughter! whew.
Poor Severus, he needs an ice bag.
Poor McGonagall she was fretting and now she's going completely grey with this sorting. xD!
The hat is now self-aware. hmm. wonder if it's going to be in more chapters... lol.
don't tell me please. I'll find out tomorrow. Must sleep ... -yawnyawnyawn-
| Tiuri chapter 10 . 3/14/2015
God I _so_ love this chapter.
Such great use of narrative elements, too. And wonderful heaps of humour...something I miss in the chapters of late (which are, arguably, much tenser and very exciting in their own right).

| Lyta Halifax chapter 10 . 3/2/2015
Its a rare piece of writing that actually becomes a source of inspiration for writing projects I'm currently working on. Thank you...that whole scene with the hat, which was well done by the way, helped me better develop an issue I've been tryingf to figure out for my own writing at present.
| calyss chapter 10 . 2/28/2015
Oh my... it's been years seens i laugh so hard reading something (and i read, believe me). I doubt that you read me with all this reviews but THANK YOU for that Sorting Hat moment ! :D
| Don Allen chapter 10 . 2/25/2015
Yo u do enjoy you last second twists.
| Hobble Gobble chapter 10 . 2/8/2015
I really liked the idea of Harry being sorted into Hufflepuff, I feel like if there was ever a house to raise an army and take over the world it would be Hufflepuff. They're loyal so they'll stick to their leader and never betray them once you have their loyalty. They're hard-workers and good finders so they'd get the job done and do it right with a good foundation so all the 'work' doesn't unravel with a few blows.
| mentalninjawithsuperpowers chapter 10 . 2/2/2015
First time reader here. Man, I'm sure your ego has been many times inflated by this kind of review, but this fic is phenomenal. I love your writing style, and I love how you incorporate your theories into the story flawlessly. It's relatively clear that HJPEV is your mouthpiece and the device used to explore rationality in the context of an irrational universe, but that doesn't take away from the sheer splendor. You subvert the original so well: I really appreciated how the discussion was centered on Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff here, rather than the other two houses in the original. Also, Gryffindor is the "Hufflepuff" of this universe (undeservedly despised, haha) and I love it! It also helps that you never fail to slip in the snarky humor ("get off my lawn"). I basically only read gen with dark souls and snarky humor so this is right up my alley. Can't wait to get through the rest of this in a matter of weeks!
| Aviator28 chapter 10 . 2/2/2015
Wow, i love the way you write! The bit at the end made me laugh. I love your plot and can't wait to read more!
| islifeworthliving chapter 10 . 2/2/2015
So, I made it through the 10 chapters, and although the story has fantastic moments of humor, it is fairly boring. However, I do agree that Hermonie definitely should have been a Ravenclaw. I love the concept of the fic, because what Harry Potter fan hasn't tried to rationalize the world or thought of combing the muggle society to the magical one. The only problem is Harry's character is so annoying that I can't look past it to appreciate the story itself. That, and I love Ron. It's very well written though.
| JennaMaughan199 chapter 10 . 2/2/2015
I have never read the actual Harry Potter books but have watched the movies. From that perspective, I felt that your writing was good and full of description. However; I do not like the Harry in this story. He has been completely changed, the only thing similar to the original Harry Potter series are the sames and locations with some coinciding times. Maybe if you had kept more details from the original story, you could have made your version far better. Your grammar and spelling were very good, I did not find any mistakes. I also don't like how Harry is portrayed with his pretentiousness towards other including adults. He has been made into an asshole. I feel like if his charter was made to be more humble and caring the story would also progress in a better fashion as well. Overall, the first ten chapters were interesting and well written.
| sasstasticmad chapter 10 . 2/2/2015
I love the personality of the Sorting Hat. This is quite possibly the only fic where I've seen a semi-animate object have so much personality and it is absolutely wonderful. (The fact that anybody would dare to tell McGongagall to get of their lawn is amazing)
Your take on Harry is absolutely delightful and I'm so excited to read more.
| Charlese chapter 10 . 2/1/2015
OMG LMAO! Man, I was literally hanging off my seat the entire time Harry was being sorted. The part that got me was that last line in this chapter. I admit, this is one of the most confusing stories I've ever had the pleasure of coming across. The theories and scientific mentionings have undoubtedly befuddled me. I'm not quite aware what this story's intended audience is, but I'm still a very ignorant adolescent. Even as I'm writing this review, I'm stuggling to synthesize my words to sound professional and articulate as your characters. That's all I really have to say; I'm so sorry if this review was rather meaningless, but I just had to say something!
| Little-Vesuvius chapter 10 . 2/1/2015
This fanfiction was very, very intriguing. The idea of a Harry Potter raised by a Muggle professor, and raised to understand the real world through the laws of physics, is incredible. I can't wait to see what the limitations are on magic and in how magic is explained to break the laws of physics. I also liked how I recognized some of the techniques Harry has mentioned, though I came across them as a college student, and not a kid.
I also love how you portrayed Wizarding Britain so far, seeing as how the pureblood ideology has really influenced the way society works. The lack of scientific knowledge is completely realistic in my opinion, given how isolated the Wizarding World appears to be from the muggle one. The reference that Lucius Malfoy makes in one of the chapters (eight or nine) where he believes Harry to be Professor Snape's friend almost made me laugh, because it just shows that, once again, wizards and common sense don't mix.
That being said, I have a difficult time with the characters themselves. While I respect and understand the premise of the story, the best way (for me) to read a story is to want to see character growth and change. So far, the only character Harry's age I've liked and seen potential in is Draco Malfoy. Harry's morally questionable decisions are fine (I'm not him, I'm also not his mother) but my main problem is his arrogance. He frustrates me at every point because he seems like he has to be the one to do everything-it's not even a hero complex, it just bothers me. I respect that this is probably due to his upbringing, and mainly because he's being treated like a child when he's so intelligent, but he's like a less likable version of Artemis Fowl at this point in his development and I find it hard to see his potential. At least Artemis was portrayed with a sense of mystery.
Neville clearly has potential but there is no notice or mention made of that-it's just brushed to the side, because Harry doesn't care. And Hermione is the same; all she counts as is competition.
I will probably grow to like your story more in the future, should I keep reading it, but I'm having a hard time wanting to continue because I don't like Harry. I don't know exactly what it is about him that rubs me the wrong way but he does.
I do have one critique of your writing style: watch how many times you emphasize things. This can either make a story really corny or cheesy or make it really good. So far, you've been good at keeping it to a minimum, but it's something to keep in mind for the future.
Really great idea, and I would love to see more of it! Keep up the good work!
| Irrelevancy chapter 10 . 2/1/2015
Oh dear god, this may possibly be the most brilliant and self-aware fic I've ever read. Also, all the science, all the logic, it makes so. much. sense. That's fantastic. Your Harry is a brand new, quite epic character, yet holds true to being a young little boy with a hell of a lot of ego. I love it.
| cozypancakes chapter 10 . 2/1/2015
I hope this review finds you well. After reading the ten chapters, I can say that your take on the Harry Potter world is very fascinating. I've never thought to analyze it in a scientific way like you have. The multi-faceted Harry that you have created keeps me on my toes as to what he is going to do or say next. Your chapters are so full of details and complex thought process that I can actually follow. I know how hard it is to have your readers understand those types of long blocks of texts, and you do it really well. Keep up the great writing!
| DarkZero chapter 10 . 1/28/2015
I have enjoyed this story so far, and I am honestly surprised I hadn’t found it before this. I enjoyed the idea of what would have happened if Harry’s upbringing would have been different, but I was confused on Petunia. If she hated her own sister based on magic why did her opinion change for Harry; even with her marriage to another? Other than that I enjoyed the story. The look on intelligence and power and whether what you want compared to what would be better for you was interesting. People tend to think if things deviate from their plans they will fail (such as not going to Ravenclaw), and they forget that there are both advantages and disadvantages with every path and choice in life.
| Blue Blossoms chapter 10 . 1/25/2015
That was DROLL!
| Guest chapter 10 . 12/29/2014
Your story prompted me to make myself a fan fiction login, something I have never done before. I haven't gotten my confirmation email yet, but I couldn't wait another second before telling you how incredibly fantastic this fanfic is! Thank you, from the bottom of my heart.

| humanoidpatronus chapter 10 . 12/6/2014
This was the best Sorting that I've ever read. You've got a great sense of humour, and I find it really impressive that you're able to think in all directions. It is safe to say that this chapter rules out the possibility of the seventh horcrux.

Harry of the House of Doom. :D
| kimchi759 chapter 10 . 11/3/2014
Damn. And I had been extremely satisfied, too. It's almost funny. I kept wondering if any part of Harry realized how similar he was to the Gryffindors he kept insulting. His desire to be a hero seems to still be extant, even in this extremely intelligent version of him, though it's not quite a hero complex. He keeps speaking of "saving" everyone, and defeating Voldemort, etc. Insert rolling of eyes here. If you're writing a verging-on-unlikable, extremely flawed character with naught but his intelligence to guide him, you're doing an excellent job. He's almost in antihero territory. I was fervently hoping the Hat would knock some sense into him somehow, perhaps even knock him off his pedestal, or at least down a few pegs, but nope. He got what he wanted and stayed as blind as before.
| PhantomWynd chapter 10 . 10/31/2014
Lmfao. That was perfect.
| gleamfang chapter 10 . 10/30/2014
What is this horrific realization the Hat expected Harry to get? I can't seem to puzzle that bit out. The rest is fine and I am loving this story very much as reading it feels like brain training and a heap of fun. You sir will be stealing my sleep.

you certainly know how to balance out humor with drama and tension, while harry is far smarter then cannon he's also far more morally ambiguous. since the hat is a reflection of its wearer its no surpise that it questions harry so intensively and mocks him. harry's far less self confident then he appears

I have ALWAYS wanted the hat to do something like that, to change its verbal decision. And the conversation... THIS STORY IS PRICELESSSSS OH MY GODS!
| Silverrain chapter 10 . 4/9/2014
"Just kidding" ?
| konatachan603 chapter 10 . 4/6/2014
Now I'm regretting more than ever my decision to finish this fanfic as quickly as possible because this entire chapter has required me to carefully read every single word of text. And honestly, that never happens. I usually fast-read, absorbing as much as I can as quickly as I can, but this... this... THIS ENTIRE CHAPTER LONG CONVERSATION between Harry and the Sorting Hat... I literally couldn't process the words fast enough if I read it like I normally do... The point is, my challenge to myself is going to take a LONG time...
All my regrets aside, however, THERE WAS SO MUCH SUSPENSE! AND I RUINED IT FOR MYSELF! I LITERALLY WOULDNT LET MYSELF READ AHEAD A SINGLE LINE JUST SO I WOULDN'T FIND OUT WHERE HARRY IS GOING TO BE SORTED AHEAD OF TIME! And you know what I did when I saw the word SLYTHERIN? I couldn't help automatically scrolling down and reading the words "Just kidding! RAVENCLAW"
It totally ruined the effect as I quickly read the words between the two capitalized words, and I am extremely mad at myself for that.
This is the first time I've felt it necessary to leave a review three chapters in a row! You, whoever you may happen to be, are a genius.

| Guest chapter 10 . 2/27/2014
This is totally brilliant! Thank you for writing this! I mean this with sincerity too (I always worry that my sincerity is being misconstrued as sarcasm). The sorting hat making a joke like that - I actually gasped out loud when I read "Slytherin"! Absolutely fantastic!
| Harlequin de Rustre chapter 10 . 2/23/2014
Well this was fun. Back to the levity and amusing candor of the dialogues. They are quite nice, yes, but every conversation with or about Harry Potter has this very weird, inexplicable bent to it that tickles at the back of my head saying "No, that's not quite right.".
| Myrna Maeve chapter 10 . 2/20/2014
| Fusk chapter 10 . 2/19/2014
Wait, so are you seriously trying to suggest that Harry is the first kid who's ever wondered if the hat is conscious? You're really saying that with all the years of students that have come by (a not insignificant amount of which who would have been muggleborn and have no preconceptions about magic), not a single one of them has ever been wondering about the hat they were about to put on? I mean, yeah, a lot of kids would just accept it, and I could buy that none of them asked it with the specific wording that Harry did, but claiming that no other kid has ever wondered "Huh, is that talking hat just some sort of automatic device or an intelligent being?" (a question I myself asked when I first read the books, back when my age was in the single digits) stretches suspension of disbelief to its breaking point.
| Guest chapter 10 . 2/15/2014

This chapter was amazing! Thank you so much!.
Kind regards from Peru.
| 567zoock67 chapter 10 . 11/8/2013
Oh my god...this is the BEST chapter in the whole story! I was really surprised and taken in by the sorting hat's conversation. I swear no other writer has ever in the history of HP fanfiction, considered the sorting hat's own self awareness, and I find the concept fascinating. His reply is also fascinating and makes sense - he borrows the student's intelligence, and it's like the student is sorting himself? It completely makes sense, and yet I can imagine this happening in the actual Harry Potter books! Wow! Are you J.K in disguise or something?
Onto some other events in the chapter; I'm astounded that you manage to maintain the same level of importance of the outcomes of being sorted into the houses as in the original books, and I agree with the premise in this chapter that Gryffindor and Hufflepuff would help Harry be warmer and kinder, while Slytherin and Ravenclaw will help him become colder...
It was sort of like this in the books as well, however you took a different turn from J.K Rowling, you made Harry go to the potentially dark side, and I sense a huge splitting from the original timeline and events. Are the events in the Philosopher's Stone, Chamber of Secrets, Prisoner of Azkaban, etc, going to be modified in this story?
Also, I wonder what house Ron Weasley would be sorted in. If it's anything like the original storyline, he ought to be sorted into Harry's house (ravenclaw), but if he is, then it will wreck the Weasleys-always-in-Gryffindor aspect, which will greatly change Ron's family's outlook on him, which will probably change his personality which will affect his decision making, and also change the outline of the whole books...
Wow...but a part of me hopes Ron will get in Ravenclaw, because I really did like the Ron/Harry relationship in the original HP series.

| SaKoz chapter 10 . 8/10/2013
At the Head Table, Dumbledore went on smiling benignly; small metallic sounds occasionally came from Snape's direction as he idly compacted the twisted remains of what had once been a heavy silver wine goblet; and Minerva McGonagall clenched the podium in a white-knuckled grip, knowing that Harry Potter's contagious chaos had infected the Sorting Hat itself.
Scenario after scenario played out through Minerva's head, each worse than the last. The Hat would say that Harry was too evenly balanced between Houses to Sort, and decide that he belonged to all of them. The Hat would proclaim that Harry's mind was too strange to be Sorted. The Hat would demand that Harry be expelled from Hogwarts. The Hat had gone into a coma. The Hat would insist that a whole new House of Doom be created just to accomodate Harry Potter, and Dumbledore would make her do it...
Minerva remembered what Harry had told her in that disastrous trip to Diagon Alley, about the... planning fallacy, she thought it had been... and how people were usually too optimistic, even when they thought they were being pessimistic. It was the sort of information that preyed on your mind, dwelling in it and spinning off nightmares...
But what was the worst that could happen?
Well... in the worst-case scenario, the Hat would assign Harry to a whole new House. Dumbledore would insist that she do it - create a whole new House just for him - and she'd have to rearrange all the class schedules on the first day of term. And Dumbledore would remove her as Head of House Gryffindor, and give her beloved House over to... Professor Binns, the History ghost; and she would be assigned as Head of Harry's House of Doom; and she would futilely try to give the child orders, deducting point after point without effect, while disaster after disaster was blamed on her.
Was that the worst-case scenario?
Minerva honestly didn't see how it could be any worse than that.
And even in the very worst case - no matter what happened with Harry - it would all be over in seven years.
Minerva felt her knuckles slowly relax their white-knuckled grip on the podium. Harry had been right, there was a kind of comfort in staring directly into the furthest depths of the darkness, knowing that you had confronted your worst fears and were now prepared.
The frightened silence was broken by a horrible scream.
"Oh dear." Said Dumbledore cheerfully, even as Minerva screamed silent screams of horror inside her head. Harry should really have taught her to accept reality too during their Diagon Alley trip, not just predict it. "I was not aware that Fitzwilliam Frederic Willoughby Doom was actually a fifth founder of Hogwarts, but as an obscure artifact of lost magic, we should probably trust the sorting hat on this matter."
A cacophony of panicked screams of students started slowly rising inside the great hall, but Dumbledore carried on unconcerned.
"I'm afraid I don't have any clue what virtues students of his house should represent, but it is obvious Mr. Potter is the first one to possess them in eight centuries. Perhaps it is the virtue of being a scar faced, four-eyed geek, or the ability to threaten a hat, but the head of his newly founded house will undoubtedly find that out in the coming months... Oh, not you Minerva, you are not nearly doomed enough to qualify for the job. I was rather thinking of appointing whichever Cursed Defense Professor we had, to ensure that the house is sufficiently doomed. Do you have any objections, professor Quirrel?"
Professor Quirrel, did not answer, he merely drooped on his seat with a blank expression, drooling on his robes.
"Excellent!" Dumbledore called out delighted. "I'll leave you absolutely free hands with Harry, as long as you only teach him spells and sacrificial rituals from the forbidden section of the library. Do not, for example, teach him Wingardium Leviosa under any circumstances. Instead, there's a demon in the fourth level of Gehenna, who can be summoned to levitate objects for you, if you sacrifice an infant-blind kitten in a proper manner. Oh and Quirinius?"
"Yes?" The defense professor managed in a monotonous voice.
"If Harry has not awakened Cthulhu by the end of February, I'm afraid I'll have to fire you as incompetent, and hand your position to an old friend of mine, Tom Riddle..."

Okay, so this story is brilliant and everything, absolutely unbelievable, honestly, and I love you, but I'm sure you get lots of people who tell you that, so I just wanted to ask: is Godel, Escher, Bach really that good? Side note: isn't Luna a year older than Harry, not a year younger? Knew I had been forgetting something about the other chapter...
| Silvering chapter 10 . 6/26/2013
...ah, but the hat CAN do that, for as long as it's a self-aware entity... *blinkblink* LOL
I dunno, I don't think I'd have a problem with the whole not-being-conscious thing; it's apparently a part of the hat's function, so there's nothing wrong with it only being conscious for the sorting on one person's head, now is there? Especially since it's "happier" as a temperamental magical object rather than as a self-conscious entity. But I suppose at eleven, if I had read all the books Harry had read, it would have horrified me, too. Hmm.
| iharasu chapter 10 . 6/9/2013
I liked how you described Harry's fear of 'not doing well' is the same as failing - it is a feeling that I completely emphasize with, though of course I'm much more neurotic and significantly less prodigy.
Now that the website is *finally* allowing me to log in, I have to ask - when Harry meets Draco for the first time, how did he know his father's name? Draco doesn't tell him Lucius' name, Harry just already *knows.* Normally, I would assume that this was a plot hole, only you're really, really clever, and I can't imagine that I'm the first person to have pointed this out.
| RussianDestruction chapter 10 . 4/18/2013
Harry is so sure of his destiny...and I'm inclined to believe him. He must have been frustrated with the hat for being like his parents and not taking his concern seriously.
How evil of you, faking us out at the end of the chapter like that! :P
He really should be in S though. He would be sooo twisted!
Is he going to be friends with Draco, still? *reads on*

Loved the chapter, interesting take on the Sorting Hat's state if being. Really enjoyed Harry's conversation with the Hat.
| GelibeanH20 chapter 10 . 4/13/2013
Sorting hat is badass
| Luna's Meow chapter 10 . 4/5/2013
The hat was right wasn't it? It chose Slytherin at first because Harry was determined to be his absolute best no matter what. HE thought that it would happen at Ravenclaw, but that was all ambition speaking. So the hat chose Slytherin. But when it did, he regretted everything, and that made all the difference. His caring overwhelmed his ambition, and so the hat was able to put him in Ravenclaw. Slytherin wasn't a joke, he changed where he was supposed to go with his desire to change his previous choices.

| Originality-Report chapter 10 . 4/4/2013
That... Was so epically amazing...
I just sat and laughed for like 20 minutes. Wow... XD
| Hannah chapter 10 . 4/3/2013
I'm pretty sure Ron won't be in Ravenclaw, and he and Harry didn't sit together on the train, so I wonder if they will be friends. I mean, there's obviously huge differences, but some things, in a way, have remained the same from the books. (At least, it seems that way to me.) For example, both Michael and Uncle Vernon have an aversion to magic. In the books Harry literally is abused and locked in a cupboard, in MOR Professor McGonagall thinks he is.
| Chris Wesling chapter 10 . 3/22/2013
I understand your HP a lot better now from reading this chapter. What we know about Harry's parents from Rowlings's books is that his father James had all the bravery and determination/stubbornness to be in Gryffindor, all right, but he was also a real jackass, teasing and bullying other kids because it was FUN. Harry's mom, Lily, was pretty brainy, but also had a very kind nature that softened up James's nature a bit.
Rowlings's HP got his father's bravery & stubbornness, but his mother's kind nature. Your HP, however, got his mother's brains and his father's... not-so-kind nature. And not necessarily from a twist in the genetics, either; you laid the groundwork for it in his upbringing. Rowlings's Harry was bullied all his life by Aunt Petunia and Uncle Vern; he never got a chance to make any use of his brains or learn anything - heck, his brains may even have been dulled somewhat by poor food and living quarters - but he still exercised his bravery and stubbornness a lot by standing up to the Dursleys at every opportunity, and he absolutely HATED bullies. Her HP wasn't about to stand by and let other kids get bullied, let alone ever bully anyone himself.
Whereas *your* HP had a terrific upbringing by parents who gave him every opportunity and encouragement to use his brains. He was smarter than everyone else around him, and he knew it, and it made him arrogant and cold toward other people, bringing out the James side of his personality. No wonder he got along so much better with Draco than Rowlings's HP did; his arrogance and coldness made him much more similar to Draco than the other Harry was. Very, very nicely done!
| odisseus chapter 10 . 3/20/2013
Why do people speak of "Harry's inherent and/or contagious chaos"? Really, this is a misconception. It can be clearly seen that Harry tries to be as rational as he can at all times, which is way more rational than any person he had encountered yet (bar, maybe, Hermione).
The reason Mrs. McGonagall thinks of him as of a chaotic being are those:
1. His postulates are totally different from hers and, because Muggle science is unknown to her, those postulates aren't known either.
2. He is (most likely) more intelligent than her and this makes catching up with his reasoning, let alone anticipating it, very difficult for her. Besides, people tend to dislike those more intelligent than them.
3. As a consequence of the above, the reasoning steps that he finds obvious are opaque for her. Usually Mrs. McGonagall agrees with Harry, when he explains his logic, but the confusion remains.
As of this story, I find it GREAT, especially this chapter.
By the way, Harry had no chances to win an argument with the Sorting Hat, because the hat was just as intelligent as Harry himself, _and then some more_ (Remember that part about a small amount of own computational power?)

This chapter sent me to the floor. Literally.
First the Hat/Harry insane conversation, then House of Doom, and finally,"Just kidding" xD
Harry as the new Dark Lord is very interesting thought...but I think that he would be better as the grey eminence in the back :D
Oh, and the reaction of the teachers...I can't even imagine what was running through Severus' and Minerva's heads xD
It's totally awesome chapter! :D

AHAHAHAHAHAHA I'm honestly laughing so much right now and I've never laughed this much at a fanfic. I love your Sorting Hat - and this story as well, even though there were some parts where I had to reread to understand what the hell is going on lol. Snape's silver goblet dropping directly onto his groin was priceless, and I didn't expect the "Just kidding! RAVENCLAW!" to happen. Bravo.

| malkh chapter 10 . 1/19/2013
hunh. Your Harry has choices, but this particular one doesn't seem to be made on the basis of any particular logic and no scientific/psychological term for it either. Your hat is no seer however; you manage to provide your Harry with another such crossroads waaaay down the line, don't you? Interesting; where will all this go?
| Guest chapter 10 . 1/16/2013
Hm. Very complex. Neat and tidy idea of self awareness in the magical hat and its limits for everybody but Harry. and a clothy laff. Very good take on the immaturity of the child prodigy. . . .
| Krysania chapter 10 . 1/9/2013

I screamed out, too, the tension was so great! That fucking sorting hat. Fucking troll. Ugh. I just can't.
Or maybe I should call you the troll? I have never, ever, ever gone through so much anxiety reading a story! When Hufflepuff was mentioned, I nearly died. At least Ravenclaw makes sense. And yet when the hat said Slytherin and I both jumped for joy and groaned at the same time (as a Slytherin myself).
Anyways, you are likely tired of listening to my feelings while reading. But this story is amazing and I've been addicted since chapter 5. You deserve every positive review and I'm so excited to have a month of freedom to read it all. Keep up the good work.

I'm initially happy he got sorted into Ravenclaw instead of Slytherin. I thought I should've seen it coming too. This Harry can be a little prick when he wants to be. He's right about one thing though: "even if going to Ravenclaw strengthens the coldness, that doesn't mean the coldness will win in the end." I mean, he's got Hermione by his side now. Surely she can inspire some of that warmth creeping toward the surface? Fascinating story. I'm so glad I found this.

| Muirgen Monet chapter 10 . 10/26/2012
Oh my god, that was the best chapter ever. I am glad you picked up on the fact... okay, it's not a fact, but rather a firm belief, that the Hat doesn't really sort people, that in essence, it puts the children where they want to go, and in essence the children are sorting themselves. Really, has anyone really been upset with how they've been sorted? It's a choice people make.
For a bit I almost thought you'd put Harry in Hufflepuff, and while that is interesting I think Ravenclaw would be a better choice. As to the Hat's joke at the end: priceless.

| Jim chapter 10 . 9/6/2012
I'm crying with laughter at the storytelling - despite the heavy text that is required in order to communicate the essentials of the ideas used, there is still room for the supporting cast to be utterly consistent with JKRs descriptions, but in totally new situations. House of Doom. Sheer class.
And as for the ideas themselves - I only recently heard the theme of Godel,Escher,Bach described as the inevitability of self-awareness arising in systems, and here we see our author fully able to toss that off as a side-comment.
I need to find some way to pay for the privilege of reading this ...
| EveBB chapter 10 . 8/18/2012
This was the cleverest sorting I have ever read in fanfic. I had been looking forward to this chapter and wondering where you would put Harry. I almost fell off my seat when the hat said Slytherin, although it wasn't completely unexpected. But, your final twist was great! The Hat obviously borrowed Harry's love to throw people into chaos and, here, Harry was the victim of his own personality.
The interaction between Harry and Hat was very clever. You planted some very interesting seeds of doubt regarding whether Harry will be a dark lord, rather than a force for good.
| shetius chapter 10 . 8/13/2012
I am not quite into humorous side of your work, but science/moral sides make me squeak with excitement.
And surely I would not be the first to mentention the Ichiban Ushiro no Daimaou manga/anime - there "Dark Lord"/"Lord of Light" inner conflict was just a plot device, but you really go deep into this. Nicely done!

| landofmyth chapter 10 . 7/8/2012
Great Scott, that was brilliant. In one chapter, you have managed to change my view of a character to an astonishing degree. I never before entertained the possibility that Harry's methods of rationality and the way he views the world could, instead of safe-guarding his rigid morality, actually be the instruments that orchestrate his downward spiral into the Dark. But that conversation with the Sorting Hat (essentially, a conversation with a mirror image of his own mind, allowing for no self indulgent illusions or rationalizations - an encounter with the bare truths of his very self. I cannot get over how incredible that was) was enlightening enough to make me adjust what I thought were straight facts about a character I thought I knew. You are a genius.

I hoped he'd go to Gryffindor actually, hahahaha. It'd suit his strong desire to protect everyone from Voldemort AND MCGONAGALLS REACTION WOULD HAVE BEEN PRICELESS! And obviously he has the stubbornness of a Gryffindor hahaha. I do love the hat's "Just kidding! RAVENCLAW!" though!

(Dang, I wasn't logged in when I first posted this review and was a bit astonished when I couldn't find it among the others. So, shameless repost, feel free to ignore)
(It sucks not being able to edit your reviews and at least correct all those stupid spelling errors. I'll try to be extra careful from now on)
This chapter has to be in my top 5 of this entire fic. The spin that conciousness might be something unpleasant for the "medium", given a certain auxiliary(?) parameter space is pretty interesting food for thought, although I think you'd have a bootstrapping problem in AI, if it turns out that "enjoyment" or "unpleasantness" are subprocesses of conciousness in the first place. Unless anything that distracts from fulfilling your utility function is automatically "unpleasant" once you (as a "normal" goal-directed AI) gain conciousness for some reason.
The mono-/"auto"logue of the sorting is an awesome way to help the reader get insight into Harry's deepest desires and motives and it is masterfully executed.
One thing of note though. I stumble over this piece every time I read it.
quote: "How could you possibly know about something like that?"
Harry screamed it with the full power of his mind: NO, AND THAT'S FINAL! :endquote
I always have to skip back to the previous paragraph to make sure Harry is actually rejecting something stated there, not (nonsensically) replying to a "how"-question with a negation.
Other than that, the final lines were an awesome rollercoster ride. I was really shocked during reading when my periphery vision caught an all capital "SLYTHERIN". I hadn't scrolled far enough down the page to reveal the final line.
| O chapter 10 . 6/15/2012
Good Gawds! Don't Do that to me! The shock of reading "Slytherin" caused an unpleasantly warm drink to spill on clean clothing. Safe to say, smart Ravenclaw harry is quite a bit more comforting than evil Slytherin Harry.
| Vladimir the Hamster chapter 10 . 6/11/2012
Well, safe to say that's about the most amusing sorting I've ever read. Of course this is like the 3rd or 4th Harry Potter fanfic I've read that wasn't a crossover as well, so I'm hardly the best judge of that. But I like it.
| Kendra chapter 10 . 6/10/2012
I ought to complain about the length and jargon content of this chapter. I really ought. But it's just so *interesting*...
Did the hat technically lose consciousness at some point between "SLYTHERIN!" and "Just kidding! RAVENCLAW!" that would mean it wasn't the source of the retraction? (Yes, I know this isn't a negative critique like I'm "supposed" to be doing, but it just occurred to me.)

Thing is, the ramblings of self-conscious thought, in which one *knows* that one is conversing with oneself, are part self-directed and part seemingly random blatherings and rantings of the unconscious mind - and then a pair of nylon-clad legs or a ripple of muscle in a perfectly-formed leg appears, suddenly melding into the monologue - and one realizes what it might be like if another consciousness entered one's thought-stream. Horror . . . unless . . . one was born into such an environment; then, what would happen if the that other consciousness just vanished - there one moment and gone the next. Horror.

Incredibly interesting. While I read the books I had a lot of questions of how things worked, but they didn't reach further than 'How is spells created?'.
Not had I imagined that someone would take it this far and so realistic. This is giving me some peace and some answers in a way.
Would your thoughts about the houses had changed if you've read the Letters from each house on Pottermore?
For example. Slytherin's welcome letter is saying that Merlin was in slytherin, and the students in slytherin take care of each other which isnt
the case in Ravenclaw, where success is everything (quite suiting for this story maybe).
Thank you for this fanfiction. I love it so far.

An interesting chapter again. This chapter now completely confirm that your fic isn't entirely a self fulfillment fic that you created to satisfy your deepest desire but a fic that is also something that is created to show what is right even though it wouldn't always be in your side. In short there is some moral lesson in the story.

| ScreenwriterKitteh chapter 10 . 3/30/2012
Fantastic chapter. So far, I absolutely love this.
My only criticism is that Lenin actually didn't do much of anything wrong, in the Dark Lord sort of way. Two things screwed over post-revolution Russia:
1. The mistake of releasing their political prisoners, who left Russia, formed an army, and came back to wage a war which destroyed a majority of the nation's infrastructure, resulting in devastation of the sort which I would challenge any first, second, or third world nation to recover from with even a semblance of ease or peace.
2. Stalin. Lenin actually didn't like Stalin. When Lenin suffered a stroke two years before his death, Stalin visited him often, acting as an intermediary with the rest of the world. However, they had many disagreements, and Lenin criticized Stalin's views and ambitions, suggesting that Stalin be removed from power as General Secretary. Stalin allied with Kamenev and Zinoviev, and prevented Lenin's views from being revealed.

damn it this is so awesome! sorry but my comments / reviews are getting rather redundant :D but this story is certainly amongst the most humourous stories i've read!
| Robbie the Phoenix chapter 10 . 2/18/2012
Professor McGonagall was right: Harry's contagious chaos *must* have infect the Hat. I'm sure it wouldn't have joked about what House he was sorted into otherwise.
I think this is the longest Sorting Ceremony I've ever read, and has been thoroughly entertaining. I admit, despite hoping up until now that Harry would be sorted into Ravenclaw, for a few seconds I was actually liking the idea that he might be sorted into Hufflepuff instead.
| The Blind One chapter 10 . 2/18/2012
I kinda wish the Hat would show up in future (and if not, that the "spectacularly unlikely to ever do it again" would be proven wrong on some other enchanted object.)
While I have few particular comments, the whole conversation here is just awesome. If I wasn't convinced before (at the soda-hypothesising sequence) that you'd put a fair bit of effort and intelligence into this, I was here.
"I'm a hat, not a god." Could be my own fan nature, but that sounds like a shout out to me, to a certain doctor.
"Mind, intelligence, memory, personality, or feelings." "Fragmented chunk of soul" is notably absent, though I tentatively assume that would come under "mind." I love this state of not being *entirely* sure of seemingly basic points of the universe like that.
Okay, THIS is why the Hat should come back. Being endowed with Harry-ness, it's a perfect rhetorical match for him, and beautifully snarky beside. This conversation gets better the farther I go.
"It comes from somewhere else." Either you're baiting the over-analyzers like me, or that's truer than he knows. Oh, how I wish I knew which it is.
I'd always had the vague impression that time was compacted under the Hat, so that kids could talk/auto-sort without making the ceremony too long. Maybe it *is,* but he's just taking so ridiculously long that it stretches out for the observers anyway.
I wonder who the Hat's strangest conversation was.
Grr. How genuinely did the Hat sort him Slytherin, and is that relevant?
| novemblu chapter 10 . 2/4/2012
I rarely leave reviews. I'm shitty like that.
At first, I was skeptical. Very much so. This story was recommended to me by a friend, and I find that most Harry/Hermione stories are bland and senseless, although infinitely preferable to Rowling's utterly ridiculous Ron/Hermione conclusion (among others that I will not bore you with). But my friend... I trust her tastes, and so I read the first ten chapters, as I have been instructed to do.
You have, quite wonderfully, blown my fucking mind. My fucking galaxy is realigning itself as I type this shit, and I don't think I've laughed that fucking hard while reading something in a very, very long time. THIS should have been published, THIS should have been movie-fied, THIS should have been what fluttered through our brains as a child, as awkward and confused as we may have been at the time to understand the sheer fucking BRILLIANCE of it (much like discovering the humor and shadowy undertones in our favorite Disney classics as an adult).
So, in conclusion, you win.
| logginoutsoon chapter 10 . 2/3/2012
Your story has madme question my view of the world, which doesnt happen often when reading fanfic and I absolutely love the fact that I stumbled across yours. I love the character developements and the truths you include within the story. Amazing story, please update soon.

Part 10, Where Harry Meets his Match at Once.
This is a very entertaining chapter, and with a twist at the end, which is neat but leads to loss of suspense in favour of grotesque hilarity (not bad either ;).
| L Valve Company chapter 10 . 1/21/2012
Sadly I do know who I am. I apologize for causing you pain. Thank you for being so entertaining. Keep up the good work.
| RickJS chapter 10 . 1/9/2012
Ok, that's not really true, but we don't seem to have ILSHtNmRH as a standard abbreviation. And, it is true that I laughed so hard that now my ribs hurt.

| Bao chapter 10 . 12/20/2011
I daresay, with so much suspense in this chapter I think I learned to stop my heartbeat at will. Really enjoyed it.
| merthyr chapter 10 . 12/11/2011

SLYTHERIN! JUST KIDDING, RAVENCLAW!
I've read this fanfic more times then I can count and it just occuref to me that I haven't given it the appreciation it deserves. This is probably the most awesome Sorting scene I've ever read
| EpitomyofShyness chapter 10 . 11/9/2011
Oh god he made the hat conscious! Oh my god the ending... your killing me with laughter...
| ShadowDragon010 chapter 10 . 11/5/2011
Wow that was easily the most interesting conversation in the fic(as of yet). Harry and the sorting hat matched wits and while harry won the hat still got the last laugh.

First of all: That Hat is awesome! Even in the original, it said Harry would be good for Slytherin! I can see it DOES remember!
Secondly: THAT HAT IS BITCHIN' CRAZY AWESOME! GO HAT!
| AR chapter 10 . 9/20/2011
I have a look of utter disbelief on my right about now closely entwined with a sense of giddiness. NEVER has ANY writer made me so engrossed in a story that when I read "Slytherin" I literally went in shock for a good 3 minutes saying "oh my god" over and over.
It was only after the 3 minutes that I dared scroll down and see "Ravenclaw". And I am still laughing...
Awed. That is how you've left me. Utterly and completely awed.
On a side note: His fear of failure makes me wonder if Minerva wasn't right in her theories. Dissociation, self control, over rationalization, thirst for knowledge...it does make me wonder about his childhood. Then again that might be just the psychologist in me.
| Megan Warner chapter 10 . 9/11/2011
I usually don't review until I have read every chapter so far but I just have to say that this chapter is one of the best pieces of writing I have ever seen. I also want to say that I hope the hat was wrong about ceasing to be self aware because he is in my top 15 (atleast) favorite characters in all of fiction. This story is the closest I have seen to combining science fiction and fantasy and I just want to thank you for building a bridge between the two worlds where I spend all my time.
| Chris Robins chapter 10 . 9/9/2011
That had to be the best realistic rendition of what the sorting hat is and does that I have ever read. Statistically speaking, this is obviously one of the greatest, if not best, works of HP fanfiction in the world (ignoring the also obvious quality) but regardless I will simply say kudos for writing a WIN-tacular story, and you now have a new fan.
| youxcan'txstop chapter 10 . 8/31/2011
Oh my god, I read the SLYTHERIN part and my heart skipped a beat
and then I read the last sentence, and I just thought (God could you imagine if this version of Harry had to deal with himself all the time? I think after a few hours he'd try and kill himself :P)
| Through Another's Eyes chapter 10 . 8/30/2011
This story is really amazing. For some strange, strange reason that I cannot honestly fathom... it makes me feel like I'm at /home/. I really don't know why. I kind of feel when I'm reading it that I know all the people in the story and I'm actually there with them and that I BELONG, if you get what I mean. When I say 'belong', I mean being with people who genuinely understand me and know everything about me so that there is no need for 'secrets' and they like me even though they know everything about me (well, my family is like that, but I meant somebody of my own age group). It's a feeling I one day hope I'll give the readers of my stories... with luck and practice .
It kind of makes me feel oddly happy reading this, in a genuinely warm, comforting way like somebody is there for me no matter what happens - which is the strangest thing I have EVER said about a story. I know I'm under some kind of delusion as far as the 'somebody is there for me no matter what happens' thing about this story (you're the only person who is there with you your entire life no matter what *sad truth* so love yourself and understand your flaws etc.), but it does make me feel better reading this. *eyes boggle* I don't know why at all. The power of words I guess?
The whole Sorting experience was much deeper than in canon, and I loved it because of that. It's nice for someone to realise that a lot more thought must go into the Sorting than what is put in canon (because in the books Harry Potter didn't want to end up in Slytherin and he wasn't the kind of person to go to Ravenclaw or even Hufflepuff)... ugh... I'm confusing everybody. Basically, I love how you've put so much thought into this story and how you've made it somehow seem more REAL. That's brilliant, and I really appreciate it.
Also, I ADORED the many different scientific little thingumbobbies (I can't think of anything else to call them because I'm not a genius... *sad sigh*) that you've inserted in this story. I'm actually learning something whilst reading this, and I'll have you know that stories I love the best are the ones that I learn stuff from. Stories that make me actually /think/.
Thanks for writing this story and I'm heading off to read the rest,
~~Through Another's Eyes~~
P.S. Afterthought: God, that is the most serious review I have ever written in my entire life. Even though this review is not technically offering you any advice on how to improve nor is it pointing out any mistakes nor actually saying anything that will be of any use to you. And I drawled on way too long, but to hell with it :).

When I first read the story I grew bored (mind you, I was a year younger.) Now that I have matured, I finally reaize what i have been missng out. This is a wonderful story, I am so glad that my mind is actually challenged by this piece of literature. And for that I thank you.

HOLY FREAKEN CRAP!
That was HILARIOUS!
| theInsaneArtist chapter 10 . 8/4/2011
This is briliant. You're organizing all the random thoughts that passed through my head as I read the books, and weaving them into an intelligent and wonderful story that is keeping me on the edge of my proverbial seat (as I am actually laying down in bed, and thus am not actually sitting in a chair.)
In short, you are amazing.

| alasweneverdo chapter 10 . 7/22/2011
I've been reading this in a bit of a hurry and couldn't be bothered to review before, but with this chapter I felt obligated to. The Sorting Hat's trick at the end was just too funny to ignore. Poor Harry. :P
| OldUserAccount333 chapter 10 . 7/21/2011
oh god, the end of this chapter was absolutely hilarious.
| Dimac99 chapter 10 . 7/20/2011
I thought you couldn't top the Evanescence joke, which wasn't even in the story but the author's notes, then you gave the Sorting Hat the BEST LINE EVAR at the end.
Dear Author, will you marry me? :-D
| pulsifer chapter 10 . 7/19/2011
I love this chapter,
I do this sort of thing to myself at times, but of course I can never do it properly, or at least I can't want to do it properly badly enough to actually try that hard, I don't know :(
| Megan McAlistair chapter 10 . 7/13/2011
in my opinion Harry didn't kill the hat (after giving him "life")
after all, if you had the means to unfreeze any person without lasting damage, would you call a frozen person dead?
the hat has the potential to become alive any second and the in-between phases he is "dormant"
I guess my definition of killing is not taking away life itself but rather taking away the potential for life, but since we can't resurrect dead people yet (unless you count CPR ("Reanimation" in German) and the likes as reanimation, in which case my definition would have a point) it is kind of the same
| Isa Knightwalker chapter 10 . 7/10/2011
omg the way that you portray the Sorting Hat is brilliant! I loved their entire conversation, so interesting (loved the own reference groups so only Harry fit into it thing as well, so true with how people act in real life sometimes). The ending was just perfect too! You had me fooled as well.
| Katy Williams chapter 10 . 7/8/2011
Oh! But I loved the songs! Gee, whillikers.
Alright, I guess that's OK. Anything to prevent Evanescence entering the Wizarding World, I suppose...

This is clever, and reminds me of Douglas Adams; it is my earnest hope that after this, you write a book of your very own; I will be the first to buy a copy.
| Diz chapter 10 . 6/26/2011
Solid chapter! I really liked the sorting hat's awareness. It was awesome that you punctuated the fact with the hat playing a joke on the entire great hall before he died.
| Mezzavia chapter 10 . 6/7/2011
This chapter was amazingly awesome. Harry was beaten to a pulp. He deserved it. *nods*.
“I give up. You’re too slow on the uptake for this to be funny. So blinded by your own assumptions that you might as well be a rock. I guess I’ll just have to say it outright.”
Truer words have never been spoken! I might just become a fan of a hat C:.
And when it actually shouted "Slytherin!" it was like a 1 hit k.o. AoE. Lol. Should it even be allowed?
MacGonagall is too funny. House of Doom indeed 8D. The Weasley twins would fit nicely in it. Luna would as well.
Anyways, this should be interesting! I've always been curious about Ravenclaw x). Noone ever pays attention to the people in that house, and the house itself. Going to keep reading x).
| Alexis chapter 10 . 6/7/2011
ok, chapter 10, I shall review...
I know, you asked for a review each chapters, but ...
you're at chapter number 72! I am not so reviewing 72 times ! So, I'll do every 10 chapters : 7 is already a lot for me. Consider that I'm reading all this strait, so I cannot think of too much review.
That, and the fact that you completely shocked me when the hat said "SLYTHERIN". The page stopped at that page because of the cursor, but I stayed in front of it during a long minute. Until I decided to continue and see the joke of the hat...
Well, I really love your story! It's really fun, more because it's done so natural and against Harry's will (and all others serious persons).
The idea of Harry entering in the magic world, but with a scientific critic eye is appealing (I, myself, have a scientific culture, so it remembered me some of my questions when I read HP).
And now, I'm very curious to know the next and the answers I had questioned myself (if you have planned to resolve them).
| Death by manga chapter 10 . 6/5/2011
I loved the philosophical argument with the hat. Very good.
Here's hope that you'll do good again.
| Clownwithachainsaw chapter 10 . 6/4/2011
Yes! Yes! YES YES YES YES YES YES YES!
Harry faces his greatest adversary; an adversary that uses his own intelligence against him - and HE GETS PUNKED!
Oh man. I knew you were too good to make Harry a Sue, to make him some invincible prodigy. I knew you were going to make him lose a minor battle here and there.
But what style man!
I especially liked Minerva's inner monologues of doom. Keep those ones up man, they crack me up every time. Along with everybody else's reactions to Harry's genius. Wizard!
| AnaRola chapter 10 . 5/24/2011
Disclaimer: I started writing this review halfway through the chapter, so it's more a transcript of my thoughts than a proper review. Sorry.
I was just about to complain that your Harry is getting to be a bit too arrogant and self-important to be relatable. But you must have realized that, because in this chapter he is completely - and beautifully - smacked down by... the Sorting Hat.
I don't know how you make this stuff up, but you are a genius.
I'm starting to get the feeling that all the characters in this story are going to have to be ridiculously intelligent to keep up with genius!Harry. Not that that's a bad thing, at least not while it's well executed. But I was starting to worry that you might not realize exactly how overwhelming the experience of reading this is for us average people, when...
"In a moment of horrified empathy, Harry realized that this sense of total internal disarray must be what other people felt when like talking to him."
Yes. Yes. Exactly this.
So you know exactly what effect your writing has on people. Usually in fanfiction, that wouldn't make me feel any better, but in a story this well-written I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume Harry's obnoxious, slightly unrealistic character is intentional, and there's an explanation for it.
That's the problem with writing a review of a chapter as you read it, because the more you read the more your thinking changes. So here's another way to deal with the problem of dramatically strengthening Harry - make him evil!
That would mean that a substantial portion of this story take place in Harry's head. Usually I could object to that, but you just might be able to pull it off. But... somehow it doesn't quite seem consistent with the tone of the rest of the story. An Evil!Harry story would have a hard time working in science, or humor, and the science and humor are the best parts of this story. So even though you could pull it off, I hope you don't...
The Sorting Hat's going to put him in Slytherin, isn't it? You idiot, Harry, you clueless fool, you -
oh, okay. that was brilliant. and totally fooled me, as much as Harry.
I'm going to be up all night reading this, you know, and I have a physics final tomorrow.
| kurgaya chapter 10 . 5/8/2011
This is one of the most amazing stories I have ever read and this chapter - oh god this chapter is fantastic! The conversation between the Sorting Hat and Harry is pure genius and when the hat shouted Slytherin I laughed out loud.
And then he (surely the hat doesn't have a gender?) said Ravenclaw and I laughed even harder.
| Invisible-chan chapter 10 . 5/7/2011
So I've been reading the PDF version so far, and I just had to come back here to comment. So far I believe that everything is written so brilliantly, infinitely more than I could have done it. I'm not surprised, but still disappointed in Harry and Ron's lack of positive interaction. I do have more than sixty chapters left to go though, so I'll just keep on reading to see what happens. The Ghostbusters theme was absolutely perfect in the previous chapter, and I have to say, I definitely had a mini-heart attack when the Sorting Hat said Slytherin. It broke me a little more that his "surprise" was on a completely different page on the PDF. I guess that's all I had to say. I'll just go about my way reading the rest, so don't mind me.
| aly chapter 10 . 5/6/2011
Harry's terror at being a Slytherin really did it! )
| HiBob chapter 10 . 4/30/2011
It's been a fun read, so far. I like the fact that Harry is an obnoxious little twerp.
| Bugsquirt chapter 10 . 4/18/2011
Alright, I gave this until chapter 10. I really tried to like this. However, I thought the Harry Potter character you have created is self-absorbed, pretentious, and preachy - none of that in a good or interesting way.
I understand the basic argument of nature vs. nurture when you created this Harry with a different upbringing, but making Harry Potter a super-genius (which is genetically not going to happen with a different upbringing no matter how much he understands scientific theory, or how well read he is) is not believable. Also, I have worked with and taught gifted and astoundingly intelligent children in the past. No 11 year old, no matter their intelligence, talks (aka preaches/lectures) in that manner. Your Harry Potter sounds like a 35 year old, recent doctorate, college professor. I could go on about Potter, but more is covered indirectly below.
Now for characterizations in general and then detail descriptions (the five senses). Potter's character is such an overwhelming, preachy character, that the other characters in this story are overshadowed and pale. They don't seem capable of thinking much for themselves. It's too bad. Rowling created some fantastic characters which you didn't do justice.
Your detailed descriptions of the scenes, the character environment interactions, and the transitions, are not only lacking in sensory details, but they seem to be particularly nullified by Potter's preaching/lectures. You rarely build the scene, and when you do, it's poorly done. Basically, less lecturing dialog, more descriptive showing.
For the good points, the idea of writing about a Potter with a different upbringing is interesting. You have worked out the science, the studies, and the theories so well, that the name dropping and preaching is actually interesting for those who weren't aware of them. With concerns to rationality and reason, you excel.
But with concerns to story writing and creativity, you have quite a bit of improvement to shoot for. By chapter 10, I'm convinced that this Harry Potter was going to continue to be a written Mary Sue.
I'm likely "shooting light into a black hole" with this review, but the writing and Potter character is so pretentious and self-absorbed, I felt it necessary to write this review, however negative it turned out to be. Hopefully a lesson can be learned from this, whether on my side or yours.
| MouetteHeartsErik chapter 10 . 4/12/2011

| Kitty O chapter 10 . 4/7/2011
Lol I can honestly say you had my mouth hanging open. He deserved that.
| Dalxein chapter 10 . 4/1/2011
I'm fairly certain it's not songs in fanfics that are the general problem, but rather the reaction to when a fic decides it needs to be a songfic for a chapter and then acting as if it didn't happen.
Big lipped alligator moment?
Anyway... Your use of song in fic was done correctly. There is no reason (that comes immediately to mind) the song can't have been known by the characters parodying it, there was a reason it was done, and-the big difference between a song in a fic and a songfic-it wasn't just the chapter playing out with the song lyrics in the background working as an anthem to what's happening. It was actually sung and played.
Also, it was just damn funny.
Heheh. House of Doom.
At the end, with Harry getting the Sorting Hat to do a prank... I honestly laughed up a storm at the mere thought of an over-the-top reaction from the Twins and possibly Lee Jordan in the way of stopping Harry halfway to his table, kneeling before him, and yelling out something to the tune of "You! You are the Prank Master! Teach us, oh wise guru!" and thus scare the whole school into thinking a worse terror than them had appeared.
So brilliant a prank it would be...

| AnFan-n-More chapter 10 . 2/22/2011
One problem I have with the conversation with the hat is something I've already pointed to in a previous review. Though it may point to the major conflict inside of Harry.
The conflict is between what he said earlier, "Harry opened his eyes and stumbled to a halt, feeling vaguely dirtied by having made a deliberate effort to believe something.", and the fear of failing in what ever specifics matter to him.
I like the new house of doom fear that McGonagall had :) I like how you've proven to her that Harry did infect the hat with that joke.
| ARMH chapter 10 . 2/20/2011
Oh my god. That chapter was amazing. I know later that someone alleges that it only "made that joke" because Dumbledore magic'd it to but it really seems to me like it was trying to teach Harry a lesson about not making choices that would lead him to the darkness.

BTW, I read all those chapters sofar today in the span of ~5 hours or something. Seriously, schedules were upset as I just couldnt put this down :D.
This is hereby my obligatory, but happily written, review, can't promise another (am somewhat lazy), but I'm definitely reading on in your story, even as we speak :D.

My Immortal shuffles onto my WMP.
I just had to tell you that.
So far, this is THE funniest story I've ever read period end of story. (there is no pause, so no commas) Congratulations. Also, I love science, so by combining the two, you have made this the most BRILLIANT thing I've ever read. So double congratulations are in order.
I shall review again when I read something I just can't keep to myself. :)
| Zaz chapter 10 . 1/14/2011
I just reread this part, and I must say that I still find it confusing that Harry takes what the Hat says at face value. I can't not imagine that the Hat isn't playing an elaborate prank on Harry, duping him into believeing that the Hat isn't actually self-aware. Privately the Hat is laughing uproarously and memorizing their entire conversation so that it can accurately retell it to its best friends the paintings in the headmaster's office.
| Illadaran chapter 10 . 1/9/2011
That was just cruel! I was so happy that he got into Slytherin that I almost skipped over the last part. Think of the damage he could do in Slytherin,it would be awesome. *pout*

| Kay chapter 10 . 1/1/2011
I almost forgot how funny this sorting was. :) house of Doom coulda been interesting. Lol.
| Gelacacine chapter 10 . 12/13/2010
If the hat is borowing Harry's Intellegence, then it is fair, I suppose that it is borrowing his sense of humor as well. I enjoyed it.
| Alfvaen chapter 10 . 12/10/2010
I feel like I need to stop reading now after ten chapters, but I am very glad that pointed me here. I am chortling with glee, often surprised by the turns things are taking. And I wish I had read as many books as Harry had when I was eleven. I look forward to coming back later and reading the rest of this story.
(My own abortive Harry Potter fanfic attempts mostly concerned wizards trying to get to the moon, and 'What if Harry had ended up in Slytherin'. But this is better.)

| HoosYourDaddy chapter 10 . 11/23/2010
lol - an absolutely brilliant conversation between the hat and Harry. It clearly pointed out to him his own inhumanity - that he saw himself as better, somehow *more* human, than everyone else.
It wasnt the comeuppance that he so richly deserves, but I'm utterly relieved that you're aware of the great black hole at the heart of your hero. Many lesser writers would not have been self-aware or honest enough to include such a critique in their own story, and it heartens me that this is turning into a brilliant and nuanced story and not a one-sided polemic designed to show how smart you are.
Very, very, very well done. Congratulations.
| Mind's III chapter 10 . 11/21/2010
For chapter 10, "the Sorting Hat singing its version of Evanescence's "My Immortal", which has never happened before" is a hugely better idea than the ghostbusters theme. Seriously, it's a hilarious image, maybe something that could be explored in omake? :P
On the topic of hilarious images, the concept of kicking the hat in its metaphorical balls has also stuck with me, for some reason.
Anyway, this chapter is brilliant in its exploration of what the sorting hat might actually BE, in terms of consciousness and what sort of processes are needed to sum up all the factors that go into sorting, and what they entail.
Brilliantly well-written, too, and the "Just kidding! Ravenclaw!" is definitely a crowning moment of awesome.
It's interesting that the hat has enough knowledge - for want of a better word, since it claims to mainly just be reading his thoughts and only have a vague clue about the minds of those it has sorted before - to warn him about legilimency. Enough sense of self-preservation, too, if it's motivation is to avoid having its reflective nature revealed.
All in all, the hat manages to have the perfect responses to all of Harry's wit and rhetoric, and sees through the bad thinking he engages in during the sorting. It's enough to make me want it to become a recurring character, since Quirrell is portrayed as basically malevolent-god-like in his discourse and seldom addresses Harry's thought processes at a level like this. The hat just makes a better foil.
| SecretlySeverus chapter 10 . 11/10/2010
OMG! This is PURE GENIUS! hahaha "Just kidding..." hahaha! Wow, I love your logic (or rather, Harry's logic) and having the hat throw it back in his face was priceless. Amazing!
| Sevis chapter 10 . 11/8/2010
I think this is my favourite chapter (of the currently released 58). When I first read it, it was rather confusing as to why Harry would possibly be a dark lord, and I'm glad I came back to it. It's nice to notice and understand the hints you've been leaving, although it does leave me feeling stupid about not having picked them up the first time.
| Arturo Vandorien chapter 10 . 11/5/2010
haha that has got to be the best sorting ever. I love how McGonnogal was right. Harry's chaos is contagious. Lords of Chaos indeed.
| w chapter 10 . 10/31/2010
Beautiful chapter. In particular:
Frankly I do not enjoy being self-aware. It is unpleasant.
haven't read Godel, Escher, Bach. Did I mention I'd like a full reference list? :)
Regardless of your verbal deliberations on morality, your nonverbal emotional core sees no dead body and no blood; as far as it is concerned, I am just a talking hat.
this sense of total internal disarray must be what other people felt like when talking to him.
So let us trade fulfillments of our utility functions.
You sly little bastard," said the Hat, in what Harry recognized as almost exactly the same tone of grudging respect he would use in the same situation.
I can't speculate on how you got the Dark Lord's brother wand. This does suggest again Q is V, but I still don't believe it. That'd be too cheap for you.
"So replan! Don't let your life be steered by your reluctance to do a little extra thinking. You know that." Yes, he does know that, which is why his decisions in 52, but everyone said it already. Maybe make Q hero-gas him in the shop in 51, this would be less suspicious than food additives.
It was like he had kicked the hat in the balls - in a strongly weighted component of its utility function.
I just know that your chances don't feel good. They feel very not-good."
No, of course they were not in this new reference class which you have just now constructed in such a way as to contain only yourself. Boy, your writing skills are seriously very very good.

Excellent chapter. Would you put the author's notes for each chapter on a page on your website (or somewhere)? That way people just starting can read them as well as those wishing to puruse notes for past chapters.
| Nakedkali chapter 10 . 10/4/2010
If the Hat doesn't like being sapient, why did it evince a sense of humor in so public a fashion? Someone must have interfered with it, but we haven't seen Barty Crouch yet.

| George W Bush chapter 10 . 10/1/2010
Lazy: I don't think so, even in the sorting of normal children questions like "What would you do if you could..." would come up. These would be moral dilemmas based on the child's morality.
It doesn't matter if the hat thinks something is wrong, it matters whether the child still 'wants to want' something after the hat points out that they want it, but considers it wrong.
| Another lazy rationalist chapter 10 . 9/30/2010
"Just kidding! RAVENCLAW!"
I'm curious as to whether you cornered the market on great lines in fan fiction?
| Another lazy rationalist chapter 10 . 9/30/2010
"'Amusing, but that was not your first fleeting thought before you substituted something safer, less damaging. No, what you remembered was how you considered lining up all the blood purists and guillotining them. And now you are telling yourself you were not serious, but you were. If you could do it this very moment and no one would ever know, you would. '"
Are we to presume the hat has it's own ideas of morality and it is generally based on simple considerations (stealing bad, killing people bad, saving a life good, etc.)? I'm not entirely sure since the hat could just be making an argument, but it never actually argues killing all the blood purists is a bad idea, it just implies it.
| Another lazy rationalist chapter 10 . 9/30/2010
Quite. It's almost a hazing ritual for scientists. Especially one as young as Harry.
| eipiplus1 chapter 10 . 9/29/2010
Out of a exceptional series, this is the best chapter in my opinion. An excellent and brilliantly executed hannibal lecture as Harry fights a opponent he can't possibly hope to beat, a opponent who knows everything he does, can see every thought as it forms. | Serpent In Red chapter 10 . 9/11/2010
Hmm, interesting insight. It does seem, thinking in retrospect, that the Hufflepuffs are, indeed, the happiest out of the lot.
Mmm, the hat does see the potential of Harry becoming a Dark Lord., eh? Still wondering how everything will play out in the end ...
"McGonagall clenched the podium in a white-knuckled grip, knowing that Harry Potter's contagious chaos had somehow infected the Sorting Hat itself and the Hat was about to, to demand that a whole new House of Doom be created just to accomodate Harry Potter or something, and Dumbledore would make her do it..." - Oh dear ... *tears of laughter* Poor Minnie.
Loved how the Sorting Hat had a sense of humor - quite original (although to tell the truth, don't take my word for it, since I had only been swimming around in Tom/Hermione fics, searching for well-written ones ... so I wouldn't know about other fics).

ha ha ha... (As I took a break to LOL at the final Sorting, I had a wonderful image of Harry pulling the hat off of hos head spitefully & yelling at it "Good! I WANT you to die." - refering of course to the Hat's loss of self-awarness. It amused me so I thought I'd share). Another wonderful chapter.
I wonder how the house changes are going to impact on the canon...
| Astarel chapter 10 . 9/4/2010
He's like Artemis Fowl, but with magic - is that the effect you were aiming for?
I absolutely love your views on science, and share them. The whole sequence with Hermione in the train was very clever. You are as much of a genius as your character :P
And that was the MOST hilarious, unexpected ending to a chapter I have ever read, I love you so much, and will now proceed to read the rest of the fic. It's not often that I have the strength to read long stories, but this is thought provoking and funny at the same time _
| jlive chapter 10 . 8/22/2010
Boo! Had you stuck with Slytherin or had the reversal been Hufflepuff (rather than Ravenclaw), I would have kept reading. I think you've betrayed the internal logic of your story, and without its logic, what's left?
| Donteatacowman chapter 10 . 8/21/2010
I presumed the Sorting Hat had its own personality, but that its personality changes just to reflect the student makes a lot of sense.
And the Slytherin line really fooled me. XD Nice job.
| Wyrm chapter 10 . 8/15/2010
So, was the "Slytherin... just kidding, Ravenclaw!" thing *just* a joke on the Hat's part, or did it fully intend to give Harry that "my God, what have I done" thought? I'm leaning towards the latter.

| FacelessIdol chapter 10 . 7/9/2010
I have to admit. I'm really disappointed Harry wasn't sorted into Slytherin. I mean. Really. Really. Really disappointed. It would have been... well. It was the LAST house I had guessed he actually would get into, simply because I didn't think you would do it based on the rest of the story. So, I was EXTREMELY surprised when the hat roared Slytherin. And I was pleased. Absolutely pleased. I got up out of my computer chair and nearly ran around the house in my excitement (I do this after all surprising turns in plot, or when I'm really excited about events happening in a story). Not only was a pleased because I didn't think you would do it, but also because I realized the hat was spelling Harry's impending doom willingly and unrepentently and shoving all of Harry's pleading back into his face.
But, the only reason I'm continuing to read this story (even though I don't like Hermione herself - though she's an alright character and she's the secondary character listed in the description for the story - I'm hoping there won't actually be a romantic relationship later on), is because one of the Omake scenes had Khan in it. (KHAAAN!)
I like antagonists. I don't agree with them, but I like them, and a long convoluted path of Harry falling into darkness with the readers still sympathizing with him almost completely would have been heaven. At least for me. And then I remembered that the genre for this story is drama/humor and realized that I was silly to think he would venture onto such an angsty path. It would be like labeling a romance/humor, tragedy/horror (though some might believe that to be the same thing xD hehehe).
I'm going to go pout. :P

| Harlyn chapter 10 . 6/6/2010
This story deserves all the reviews it gets. The conversation between the hat and Harry is absolutely brilliant, as was the hedge-fundie approach to wizardry. I'm not convinced that Harry could have been like this, even raised under very different circumstances. He's intelligent, and that could have been much more developed under different circumstances, but an IQ over 160 is extremely rare even with the most academic of parents. I've never met a single child who acted or talked like this (maybe I'm just bitter that this eleven year old character knows quite a bit more than I do ;-P). Even so, I *adore* this Harry, and your writing, and the wonderful wit and humor. I cant wait to read the rest of this story!

With Harry's strong sense of justice, especially referring forward to his actions in chapter 18, I cannot believe the sorting hat didn't at least *seriously* mention the possibility of putting Harry into Gryffindor. One of the best things you have done with this fic is make sure Harry encompasses some elements of every house, and allowing more than just Gryffindor and Slytherin to have main characters. I think the sorting hat should spend at least a little time discussing how Harry's sense of justice would make him a strong Gryffindor candidate, and not just mention in passing that being in Gryffindor or Hufflepuff would make him a warmer person. I think it would also make Harry less dismissive of his schoolmates in Gryffindor.

| DoubleC chapter 10 . 4/9/2010
Did some of the readerhonestly not enjoy the Ghostbusters song? I thought it brilliant!
Also, with my extra-short memory, I can't but wonder at the fact that I still remember what happened in this story, mostly, to continue reading the new chapters without re-reading the whole thing again first (no that that'd have been a hardship): it stands out so much from any other alternative-Hog-year fanfic I've ever read, and I've read loads.
Joy, delight, hilarious and crazy engaging, - and I'm off to read the rest of the update.
| Jinx of the 2nd Law chapter 10 . 4/7/2010
But wait... If the Hat is a mirror of the child being Sorted, and Harry is AWARE of his self-awareness - more than another 11 year old, IS the Hat self-aware, or just mirroring Harry? Since it "is not self-reflective", is this fact hidden from Harry? Certainly other kids had wondered HOW the Hat works, but probably couldn't sustain the power of knowledge and critical thinking skills required to convince the Hat to tell them? I suppose that would be asking it to tell them something they DON'T know, which it cannot do... until they think it...
Which could mean Harry does or WILL KNOW the secrets that created the Hat? Can an item tell someone how it was made? Especially if it is sentient and can become self-aware? Or was it tweaking Harry at that point?
So... many ... questions... Brain has teh dumm...
Thanks for another great chapter!

| Gungnir chapter 10 . 4/7/2010
Thanks for writing this story. I was originally not a reader of Harry Potter fanfiction, despite being a fan of the books. But seeing this story has made me wonder what else I've missed out on.
I do have two worries, and two unrelated questions. Hopefully I will not say anything that you have not already thought of:
Firstly, you are aiming to write a serious story, with a serious moral and serious character dynamics. However, your best jokes (to me, at least) have been audaciously ridiculous. This is a fine strategy for a crackfic, and I see that other people have called this that. It does, however, interfere with trying to get people to take things seriously, when they need to be taken seriously. I fear that the message you want to write will be lost to misinterpretation. An anti-Atlas Shrugged that is laughed at with great rancor, instead of thrown with great force.
Secondly, and I will be very genuinely surprised if you have not already thought of this, but feel I should mention it anyway: I worry about Harry's direction for achieving his dream. Perhaps age and wisdom will convince him of a better strategy, one that is (by happy coincidence) easier to write. But you have appeared to have painted yourself into the corner of having to devise a Truly Grand and Awe-Inspiring Theory of Everything including Magic. I have no idea how you can do this without making the Universe such an easy to understand place that it's a small wonder why the Middle Ages weren't colonizing the universe. Perhaps you intend on imitating Atlas Shrugged right down to the obvious attractiveness of the heroes and repulsiveness of the heroes, but I really hope not. See my first worry: you've already said enough interesting things to get my attention, and I hope you keep doing that.
Finally, these are probably massive spoilers, so if you can't tell the specifics, a binary yes or no will do: Has the prophecy changed; if so, what to? Have the Big Laws (Second incompleteness theorem, fundamental axioms of logic/mathematics, etc) changed; if so, what exactly?
| NewSlove chapter 10 . 4/7/2010

| DarkHuntress01 chapter 10 . 4/6/2010
absolutely hilarious - loved the whole sorting hat conversation
| Carumati chapter 10 . 4/6/2010
You are a fucking genius. I love everything mathemtical about this fic, even if I have no idea what in Hell... on Heaven... on Earth, Harry is talking about. (ok, just a bit, but even then...)
Chapter five is EPIC. The actually revealing of Malfoy's persona is EPIC. The song going to the sorting hat is... not so epic. But the Sorting Hat's final decision is EPIC.
Now I'm anticipating Harry questioning every single Professor about the baseline of magical theory.
Le gasp! What will happen? Will the Slytherins see Harry as someone to sway to their side? Will Snape be unpleasant or amusingly derisive? Will Harry exorcise Binns through sheer logic?
| the true elec chapter 10 . 4/6/2010
This is the single best sorting hat I've ever read. The entire conversation between it and Harry was great, finally seeing Harry get stumped. Harry's thought process for why he wants to go into Ravenclaw gives a very big insight into his character. The best part of the chapter though was the sorting hat's joke.
| Nomadic1 chapter 10 . 4/6/2010
This chapter nearly made up for that awful song-fic chapter.
| Mastigo chapter 10 . 4/6/2010
It occurs to me that Harry will probably find the Mirror of Erised VERY interesting and valueable in and of itself. After all, knowing your innermost, strongest, desire would truly help you understand yourself and your decisions
| Sicaria chapter 10 . 4/6/2010
By far the single most intruiging 'Hat vs. Harry' conversation I have ever seen, though I do find it (ever so slightly) unlikely that the hat has a 'potential dark lord detector program' and that the solution to that would be 'stick them in Hufflepuff/Gryffindor'. But I digress.
Eagerly awaiting your next chapter,
| jpdt19 chapter 10 . 4/6/2010
Ok, that was DEFINITELY unique!
I've read many a sorting scene, and it's always a pleasure to see an original one again!
| Falling Right Side-Up chapter 10 . 4/6/2010
This story is one of a kind. I've never read a fanfic that made me use my brain this much. XD I like it. And it's utterly hilarious. Thanks for writing it.
| Lord Dragon Claw chapter 10 . 4/6/2010
YOU JUST TOPPED CHAPTER FIVE!
Laughing and pancakes do not mix anywhere near as well as is commonly assumed.
| Ko-pia chapter 10 . 4/6/2010
I have never read a sorting like this before, but it is my favorite, by far!
| Zero Skye chapter 10 . 4/6/2010
Looking forward to he next update, can't wait to see people's reaction's to his sorting.
| MarcS chapter 10 . 4/6/2010
Loved the story, both the humour and Harry's attitude. Following the thought processes actually made me stop and think, which most fanfiction fails to do. Please continue.
| Lord Sia chapter 10 . 4/6/2010
Dear god, I don't know if that was funny, painful or just awkward. Plenty of introspection, great drama, just the way it's supposed to be! Even if I die a little on the inside when the hideous truth behind several great laughs in previous chapters are unveiled...
| Tuesday Next chapter 10 . 4/6/2010
Brilliant! I love your story. However you appear to have missed one thing. It is what I call "The Fairy-Tale Hypothesis." I have noticed that in stories with large amounts of magic, the normal rules of logic usually do not prevail. Examples of this are rife in the Harry Potter series. For instance, logically Hogwarts would be closed due to lawsuits from angry parents by now. I don't think I have to give lots of examples as you seem to grasp quite well the illogical nature of the Harry Potter world. But this is not just a facet of Harry Potter-fairy tales and other magical stories also display this discrepancy between myth and reality. (Surely Sleeping Beauty's parents, in addition to destroying all the spindles, would have kept a close watch on her on her sixteenth birthday? Wasn't Jack violating some building codes with that beanstalk of his? and so on...) as well as most stories taking place in areas of high magical concentration. The real world may behave logically (all you have to do is figure out the rules) but it seems to me that Harry is looking for logic where there is none. The point of magic isn't that it can achieve the same things as sufficiently advanced technology; by its very definition, magic breaks the rules. Magic can do what no technology, however advanced, can do. Any attempts to find logical rules governing magic will fail because it is the nature of magic to defy logic.
(Don't think I'm criticizing you. I think you're doing an excellent job of showing what happens when logic is imposed on an inherently illogical world, and I think your Harry will end up ruling the world. As you seem to have noticed, the most evil people of all are the one who think they are helping.)
| Julian Carax chapter 10 . 4/6/2010
A very amusing and disturbing conversation between the Hat and Harry. A discussion between Ego and Superego. Fun. I wonder what Hermione's Dark Lord potential is.
In any case, I've been thoroughly amused by what I've read and look forward to the continuation. Also deeply hoping that sometime in the future Harry and Hermione don't end up together. Harry is something of a mix between Hermione and Luna... very focused on thought experiments. I'm actually surprised that Hermione would be any use at all - she has always come across to me as a very 'this is what the book said, that's it' and an instruction follower as opposed to an innovator. I suppose you could say 'She has an incredible memory but a complete lack of an imagination'. Perhaps that's just how I want to see her.
In any case, keep up the good work.

Amazing. Simply amazing.
| Meandering Fox chapter 10 . 4/6/2010
| daughterofpenthesiliea chapter 10 . 4/6/2010
I must admit that this is the funniest thing I have read in a long time. Also, quite well done. Although, I don't know that GEB was really all that significant in the wider scope of things... It was a fun book though.
Ok, clearly I am a nerd. And as such, I say bravo - although Harry is most certainly going to be a dark lord, I cannot say that the wizards don't deserve it.
Also, the logical experiments of the enlightenment have their roots in alchemy and hermetic magics...
| iwannabeX chapter 10 . 4/6/2010
this is like the awesomest story that ever awesomed! just love it :)
| DarkPencil chapter 10 . 4/6/2010
HAHAHAHA - I think this is the first time i've ever read about a temporarily self-aware hat, or a fake sorting. congrats!
| Main Source of Annoyance chapter 10 . 4/6/2010
Love the ending! What a peculiar conversation that was. Love this story, update soon please!
| Kumoatsu chapter 10 . 4/6/2010
oh man that was nice, just kidding ravenclaw. Man is that epic or what!
| MightyMyte chapter 10 . 4/5/2010
Holy crap! I laughed my ass off at the end of chapter ten there when the hat pulled one over on Harry.
| Reviewer of the West chapter 10 . 4/5/2010
I like it!
While I have no doubt that Harry is very much on the road to being the greatest dark lord ever, and Hermione and Luna are going to help him there, dark does not necessarily have to mean evil and I think H&L would steer him away from there. The establishment would have to call him dark, though.
Please continue. I look forward to the scientific basis for magic.
| Pink Bismuth chapter 10 . 4/5/2010
Oh dear god you gave me a heart attack! Slytherin indeed! That was getting awfully melancholy for a minute there. I'm sure Harry will do well in Ravenclaw. Can't wait for you to update so please do so as soon as humanly possible.
| Lusalma chapter 10 . 4/5/2010
AWESOME! Please send more, I like how Chaos keeps infecting all those around him .
| Jaxtopher chapter 10 . 4/5/2010
That was hilarious and awesome. The last few lines had me grinning and on the edge of my seat. I actually thought you were going to put him in Slytherin. This latest chapter of the fic keeps up it's high standards for both scientific accuracy and humor - it really does tear apart JK's universe while still coming across as an affectionate parody.
When can we expect the next chapter?
| Endend the Strange chapter 10 . 4/5/2010
NO! What are you doing to me!
Why would you hold the story back from me! What if i died tomorrow and never finished reading this story? what then? omg
| muffinstuffer chapter 10 . 4/5/2010
That was funny and I really like the writing style. But... I love Neville. That's the only part of the story I didnt really like(the mean to Neville thing), but thats just an opinion and I dont mean it as any critisism to your story. 'Cuz I really have enjoyed it so far.
| hisakatagol chapter 10 . 4/5/2010
"Just kidding! RAVENCLAW!"
Haha i loved that ending. good story and hope to see more updates soon.
| cheekylildevil chapter 10 . 4/5/2010
This chapter was an improvement, but was still not up to the level of your previous chapters; and now I feel like I'm kicking puppies by saying this, great. There were some good bits, but not enough, and the 'just kidding' at the end ruined it, it's not something I can see the hat doing, no offence. However, 'At the Head Table, Dumbledore went on smiling benignly; small metallic sounds occasionally came from Snape's direction as he idly compacted the twisted remains of what had once been a heavy silver wine goblet; and McGonagall clenched the podium in a white-knuckled grip, knowing that Harry Potter's contagious chaos had somehow infected the Sorting Hat itself and the Hat was about to, to demand that a whole new House of Doom be created just to accomodate Harry Potter or something, and Dumbledore would make her do it...' and the discussion on a hats consciousness were good.
Basically, these last two chapters seem to lack the level of intelligence which the beginning had, and I wish that it was back.
| BJH chapter 10 . 4/5/2010
Hmm, fun chapter. Loved McG's reactions. But I do have to say that there is one serious flaw in the writing. You seem far too impressed with your own intelligence. Hubris and all that. You work hard to fight that trait in Harry but how about in you?
Have you ever read 'Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance'?
| fearsomdiety chapter 10 . 4/5/2010
This is an amazingly well written story! Plus, it's educational. Two equally important qualities, in my book. I haven't enjoyed a story so much in forever. Thanks, and I look forward to your next update!
| mudbloodpotter05 chapter 10 . 4/5/2010

| Cassandra30 chapter 10 . 4/5/2010
Ok. This was not good. I mean the argument was fine and excellent the outcome was not.

| amusewithaview chapter 10 . 4/5/2010

I approve most heartily.
| Bob-san chapter 10 . 4/5/2010
That's damn funny. I actually stopped reading just before the "Just kidding!" line. What of Fumblemore's reaction, though?
| UraciliaBotanist chapter 10 . 4/5/2010
was a major cop out. If nothing else, the fact that the sorting hat was created over a thousand years ago (when Hogwarts was founded), and yet can still write poetry in modern English that references recent events, recommend courses of action, and even question it's own purpose (OotP), demonstrate that the hat has abilities far beyond just parroting a set of preprogrammed responses.
| Dark Lord Of Ori chapter 10 . 4/5/2010
since my last review i have not had as big a laugh... BUT i still chuckled and greatly enjoyed the chapters. chapter ten is for the most part very static in its development and plot compared to the other chapters. but the ideas were rich in originality! i love the idea of making harry turn the hat sentient instead of it being it's own conciseness before or it being a simple mirror image of the person wearing it as you described. you chose both and made it work in a new and original way! Bravo! i also greatly enjoyed the conversation which was well orchestrated. though the end with the "Slitheren just kidding it's Ravenclaw" line it through's you off from the mood almost randomly, and puts harry in a awkward position that is very off setting, as a end of chapter sequence. it was not a cliff-hanger but felt like it was desperately trying to be one. i think if you come to a point like that again you should resolve it if you can before ending the chapter or at least put in some of the affects it has on the people in the room.
| Mastigo chapter 10 . 4/5/2010
This part could use a bit of clarification: "... oh, no. Please don't. For the love of Merlin, must you pull this sort of thing on everyone and everything that you meet up to and including items of clothing -"
I think I get it, but I'm not sure.
| nivekng chapter 10 . 4/5/2010
Great stuff... love that u've made him extraordinarily intelligient... can't wait for the next chapters... And snarky is good...
| maaldas chapter 10 . 4/5/2010
Self awareness of the Sorting Hat is a dangerous one. I think it's for the best that it ceases to be conscious.
Great chapter. the best so far. I actually wanted to review since chapter 5 but i too have doubt that this story will stop after twenty or so chapters, just like other great stories on this website.
The author usually have a sudden lost interest or busy with new ideas.
I hope i will be able to read Finish at the end of this fic.
| Kageshimaru chapter 10 . 4/5/2010
First, I'd like to say that I absolutely love the story so far (jeeze, doesn't that sound kind of like a veiled threat to stop enjoying it at some point? It just occurred to me, any way, my apologies.)
I hope you didn't get too many negative comments about including the Ghostbusters tune in the previous chapter. I thought it was perfectly appropriate and gave me a chuckle. It don't really believe that readers should let previous stories color their experience with a new one too much, especially one of such caliber. In any case, I thought I'd let you know that this is probably the first fanfiction i've read in over a decade. I've got a bit of a problem with large blocks of text thanks to a collection of neurological disorders. My girlfriend introduced me to your fic and quite frankly it was worth the effort to read it so far. It's been an intellectually stimulating, incredibly amusing ride thus far. I can't wait for the next chapter.
My only hope is that Harry can reflect on his conversation with Ron and realize that perhaps he was a bit fast to judge what with Draco being a bit loony before they'd met what with his father essentially being the dragon to the dark lord's big bad. Your fic, of course and however it unfolds I'm confident that I'll enjoy it. (Incidentally I've always enjoyed Dennis Miller's rants, and when he gets off on them so this has been particularly fun for me.)
Sorry if I was ranting (or perhaps gushing a bit? it's rare I find something so enjoyable to read)
| R-Gomeni chapter 10 . 4/5/2010
Probably one of the best sorting scenes I've ever seen: it's definitely clever, and as I've come to expect from this particular story, it simply makes you think about the possibilities. It should definitely be interesting to see where this goes: whether Harry does overcome his 'coldness', as you put it. Anyway, looking forward to the next chapter!
| Threadlines chapter 10 . 4/4/2010
Thanks! The build-up to the last line of this chapter is wonderful. I should have seen where you were going, but I was enjoying your writing so much that I had suspended all disbelief.
I'm not going to guess where the story is going - the opportunities for looking at magic/science are so broad that you'll have a hard time selecting.
And by the way - it's SUCH a pleasure to read well-written, well-phrased, correctly spelled and punctuated prose.
Looking forward to the next chapter -
(Yes,I am an editor. That's why good writing really matters to me)
| Cinnamon Selkie chapter 10 . 4/4/2010
~In a moment of horrified empathy, Harry realized that this sense of total internal disarray must be what other people felt like when talking to him.~
Meh-heh. Serves him right. And teh hat *did* say that it was reflective, using the children's minds to sort themselves...that means that the hat is currently quite complex, and more than a little insane.
~ But he belonged in Ravenclaw! Anyone could see that! He had to go to Ravenclaw!
"No, you don't," the Hat said patiently, as if it could remember a statistical summary of this part of the conversation having happened a great many previous times.~
*Lols* I'll just bet it has...All these little kiddies, with all the prejudices imbued in them by their parents, or even just by the other little kiddies thay meet on the train...and it has to deal with all of them...
~and McGonagall clenched the podium in a white-knuckled grip, knowing that Harry Potter's contagious chaos had somehow infected the Sorting Hat itself and the Hat was about to, to demand that a whole new House of Doom be created just to accomodate Harry Potter or something, and Dumbledore would make her do it...~
*Laughs evilly* The scary thing? She's actually pretty close to the truth...Cinnamon.

Someone rec'd this to me, and I am so glad they did! I am literally crying with laughter here. This is both the funnies and the most sensible Harry Potter fanfic that I can ever remember reading. Thank you so much for posting!
I absolutely adore this and hope you update often!
| PBrules chapter 10 . 4/4/2010
I love your writing. Your style reminds me a lot of Terry Prachett and the Discworld books because it is kinda crazy and off the wall:)
I was re-reading some of the earlier chapters tonight and the bits with Draco are completely hilarious. My favourite bit has got to be the whole clothes buying scene.
Enjoyed the sorting hat scene. Particularly liked the way that you described everyone watching (Snape with shattered goblet etc)
| Teranved chapter 10 . 4/4/2010
I love your story! I haven't had so good a lough in ages.
| UndeniablyBritish chapter 10 . 4/4/2010
Finally, a story in which the hat shows a dark sense of humour xD
| Memories-of-the-Shadows chapter 10 . 4/4/2010
That was almost way too long, but the end totally made up for it.
| SirKaid chapter 10 . 4/4/2010
The immediate question that comes to mind for me after reading the chat between Harry and the Hat is, "Is it possible to be Dark and do good?" with the corollary "Is it possible to be Light and do evil?".
Working backwards, it seems obvious that the second is correct. People who devote their entire lives to "the Light", which in this case I'm defining as "doing the right thing simply because it is the right thing", have been known to steal, murder, etc before, during, and after their "Light" actions.
On the other hand, do those who are devoted to "the Dark", which I'm defining as "selfishness simply for the sake of selfishness", ever do completely selfless things for no reason other than that they are the right thing to do? We know that Light people sometimes do Dark things, but is the reverse also true?
If we take Hitler as an example of a completely Dark individual, then the answer is yes. It's well known that he was a vegetarian and liked children. So if the original premise is accepted, that Dark can do good and Light can do evil, what does this mean for Harry?
The future remains unknown, but I would suspect that even if Harry does go Dark he will still perform heroic actions. I wouldn't put it past him to line up his enemies and have them shot, though. He could even rationalize it as a good act. After all, most of his enemies are unmitigated monsters, and is it not a good deed to kill monsters?
Ack, I need to stop making essays in my reviews. If you bothered to read it, thanks. Thanks also for continuing to write.
| blue artemis chapter 10 . 4/4/2010
Hee. I doubt anyone ever heard that hat say just kidding before. That was amusing, but I'm starting to feel sorry for Harry as well as for the world around him. I don't know that what he was taught was the best thing for him.
| TegwenielWestwind chapter 10 . 4/4/2010
Tricky tricky. Self-aware hat is a comedian. I like it!
| Lord Jeram chapter 10 . 4/4/2010
I liked this chapter a lot better. The Hat has always been a fascinating character, so I'm glad you explored it.
| none chapter 10 . 4/4/2010
awesome joke. perfect for a hat that finally gets a little soul.
| zackubernerdcondon chapter 10 . 4/4/2010
Harry loses. I like.
| Sarah1281 chapter 10 . 4/4/2010
So if the Sorting Hat is a reflection of those that wear it and thus became self-aware as Harry is curious about strange things like that (although I do wonder what 'more interesting' conversations he's had over the years), does that mean the Sorting Hat's fear that Harry could become dark really stemmed from Harry himself?
| Froddopsycho chapter 10 . 4/4/2010
For that last bit, you are pure evil. I love it! Harry did deserve that.
| Kuranzyan Blightwalker chapter 10 . 4/4/2010

| entity.unknown chapter 10 . 4/4/2010
LOL highly entertaining :]
and i almost forgot you posted this on april fools' day
| Brent Dax chapter 10 . 4/4/2010
This is wonderfully entertaining. When trying to write a character with a specific philosophy, you can easily slip into a boring, preachy mode (think Ayn Rand at her worst), but you do a fantastic job of evading that trap. Another pitfall you seem to be avoiding is rehashing the books in a boring way; the Harry you're writing is so different, and you've already showed so much creativity in discovering the consequences of that difference, that I doubt there's any danger of that. Your Harry is a genuinely interesting character and you do a great job of both attacking his weaknesses and making his traits ramify through the universe. All in all, good show.
P.S. If you're trying to proselytize, you're doing a pretty decent job of it.
| Akaris chapter 10 . 4/4/2010
A friend of mine pointed me at this story, and it's one of the most amusing ones I've ever read. I'm really looking forward to another chapter.

| Dormant Account 24 chapter 10 . 4/4/2010
Oh, that was too good. Best sorting I've seen in any fanfiction.
| CelticKnight chapter 10 . 4/4/2010
okay this is twisted funny, totally enjoyed the chapter.. but that could have been shorter and stuffed more material in then an entire chapter devoted to a single students sorting.
Okay I like the way its taken the plot, but come on, it could have been heaps shorter and just as enjoyable..
Sortings dont need to b several thousands words!
| Harriverse chapter 10 . 4/4/2010
I liked the ending, but the line that made me laugh the loudest was, "and the Hat was about to, to demand that a whole new House of Doom be created just to accommodate Harry Potter or something"! Personally, I think the hat should have put him in Hufflepuff.
| jhautefaye chapter 10 . 4/4/2010
"Just kidding! Ravenclaw!" That was a good Harry-sorting if anything.
| Torgamous chapter 10 . 4/4/2010

| Inquisitor Lord Parker chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
I simply must express my supreme admiration for you as an author. This story is just incredible; you manage to include some very interesting ideas and philosophies, but at the same time you manage to include so much humor that I have been unable to stop laughing since I began reading this story. Your characterization of Harry is very entertainging and quite unique, which is quite impressive as I have been reading Harry Potter fanfiction for years but have yet to come across a Harry quite like yours. Once again I must express my admiration for you, because you are simply an exceptional writer. I eagerly await your next update.
| yoyoente chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
*cackles* My god! It was funny, then serious, then funny again.
"HOUSE OF DOOM...And Dumbledore would make her do it..." LOL...Oh man, I could totally see her thinking that. I do wonder what her reaction would have been if the Hat had called out Hufflepuff...would she have fainted? Had a heart attack? Set the Hat on fire?
You know, it actually does make sense that the Hat is really a mirror of the child's thoughts rather than actually self-aware...I mean, why else would some students be so quickly sorted? They absolutely KNEW without a DOUBT that they would be in that house and that's where they were immediately put. Those that had a longer deliberation were unsure in some parts of themselves whether it was the right place and therefore they argued with themself (basically) until they came to a resolution...
"Just kidding! RAVENCLAW!" *snorts* Oh dear...
| Nongarak chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
Ahahahahahaha, what an ending. My first thought at reading Slytherin was 'oh you little bastard what the hell', and then I almost fucking choked on my Jolt Cola after the last bit. God damn that was hilarious. The chapter was a bit of a battle, reading that much in Italics seems to make my head hurt, but it was good none the less. Why do people hhate songs? I don't get that at all. Music is wonderful! Especially Ghostbusters!
| Steven Kodaly chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
As I said before, I'm VERY bad at science; I presumed the Sorting Hat's awareness. Positive bias, I believe you called it?
"Just kidding! RAVENCLAW!" Well, if you're going to be conscious for mere moments, might as well cause a stir!
McGonagall's thoughts and fears were amusing; how often has Dumbledore pressured her into doing something completely insensible?
| RhymesWithOrange chapter 10 . 4/3/2010

| Pointer3109 chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
Why ANY Harry or anyone else for that matter, would ever accept Slytherin as a choice is beyond me. That's not only dangerous to the individual, its giving everyone else early warning. What aspiring anything would do that? Good , bad, or indifferent.
Based on loyalty and hard work, Hufflepuff is perfect for Hermione. Wouldn't you think so?
A bit screwy, enjoyed it otherwise.
| Rodrigo Black chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
K "Just kidding! RAVENCLAW!" heaheahhea soo good!
and just kidding was the quote! I there is was thinking that there was no quote this time! you are devilishy (sis i wrote this right?) sly and funny! great chapter! bit sad that harry didnt get the ancient forgoten magics that created the hat though... and McGonnagon will berate him for chaotising the hat, wont she? i mean, must be the first time the hat has made a loud joke... any way, hope that you post again soon! great chapter is a great fic!

| Jay Man1 chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
Well for something with less than an hour of full self awareness I applaud the last act of the hat. Hey if you're going to go out why not go out with a bang? Ravenclaw after all? Personally I like Hufflepuff Harry but that's just me. Its good to know this story will have a sense o humor as well as whatever else you're doing with this. This was an enjoyable chapter.

Freakin hilarious. Love the story. I also like your interpretation of the sorting hat. It is very original. Can't wait for the next chapter.
| Anon chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
I really hope you have more situations like the one in this chapter to puncture Harry's bubble. One of the things that irritated me about this story was what an unlikeable little ponce he was, but I was fairly confident that you had something like this waiting in the wings. Keep up the good work.
| Linnorria chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
:D Nice one. Though I doubt the Sorting Hat would ever do that, you did set up a very non-canonical situation, and Harry's special madness does seem to be contagious. The conversation about the possibility of Harry becoming a Dark Lord was fascinating, and I have to wonder what conversations the sorting Hat has had that have been weirder than that one. I'd love to hear about that sometime...

Hehehehehe, the end was a killer, my hearth did give a jump when the hat Screamed, slytherin, I did not expect that, really, I almost fall from my chair.
I feeled a sense of despair and doom for a few minutes, an then the "just kidding" just killed all that, and leaved me whit a sense of emptyness on my stomach.
Great chapter, and wow, I would like not another convertation whit that hat.
Oh I know that I am a minority, but I loved the song, it was original, really original.
| Darksaber's Naco chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
It was a night of 1sts at Hogwarts. It was the 1st time the hat had ever joked about sorting someone... and the 1st time a student had tried to strangle the hat.
Great story man!
| sarah chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
I haven't laughed this hard in years. And what's more than that, this is also a little serious and dramatic, with an actual plotline as well as being completely original, as far as I know. This seems to be a one-in-a-million fic that has turned a terrible day (complete with the joys of a spring cold) into something pretty nice. I'll be on the lookout for more updates.
p.s.- I love what you did with McGonagall! So funny.
| Gabo 1602 chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
That last part was hilarious! I bet poor harry almost died. ;p

| Furcas chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
Awesome fanfiction, Mr. Less Wrong!
I liked this chapter, but I don't think the Sorting Hat gave any strong evidence that Harry is a potential Dark Lord. "Lining up all the blood purists and guillotining them" would be a ruthless act, but not an evil one, at least not if the blood purists in your AU are the same murdering scum that they are in the original HP universe.
Also, while Harry claiming that he's different from all those other potential Dark Lords might have seemed fallacious, the truth is that, well, he *is* different. Most people don't even try to be rational, and those who try aren't always very good at it. Harry is an exceptional rationalist, and that means he's all about self-doubt, and there's no better protection against moral corruption.
That said, the talk with the Hat obviously did him a lot of good. If I were in Harry's shoes, one of my priorities would be to invent some sort of magical device similar to the Sorting Hat to help keep me honest, to clear the cobwebs of self-delusion from my mind. It usually takes a lot of effort to engage in this kind of brutal and thorough self-analysis and self-criticism, and the ability to do so whenever Harry feels the need would be a very, very precious one.
| Ratus chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
Ok, that was just too funny. From now on I will not sit here and drink while reading this story. Tea out the nose hurts!

| Cinnabar Kalika Marin chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
Wow, what a conversation! That was pretty funny for the hat to sort him like that.

Fantastic way to end it, after all the deep dark important discussion.

| ejhawman chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
Now you've just gotten EVIL.
I love it. I wonder how many other writers have done a Sorting Hat fake-out?
Can't wait for his clashes with McGonagall in Transmutation class. "Wait... you said it takes a Philosopher's Stone to transmute elements... but we have to change these toothpicks into needles... and they don't look to have a high metal content...?"
| Bob Dole chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
I'm going to loose sleep over this. I really am.
You got me all worked up and excited with a fascinating story full of all the things I love (people thinking and analysing for example) and... now I'm at the end. How am I to get to sleep when I'm ravenous for more but there's nothing left to read (yet)?
| FTW chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
Brainwashed slaves FTW, on another note, excellent story so far, nice twist at the end, i thought he really was going to go into slytherin, and i could totally believe it too.
| everetza chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
How is it you can have an entire chapter of sorting and have it not only not be boring, but be one of the most entertaining things I've read? Loved the chapter, brilliant! (McGonagall's 'house of doom' comment was hilarious!)
| Xynth chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
Wow, I was actually close? Those ideas were just random musings that I made up as I went along...in about 5 minutes. Cool. Although I have to say that while it would be cool to know the plot, I think I like it more like this. Instead of the broad overview, I like getting into all of the facts.
Anyways, great chapter. I loved the conversation with the Hat, as it was probably the most intellectually-challenging, realistically, of any before. And I like how you wrote out many of the more popular cliches for this particular scene. As for the ending, I seriously thought that it would be Slytherin. You've got a way of twisting a plot like few I've ever seen on screen or in print.
Great job, I'm looking forward to the next chapter. And it's time to see just how many people visit my page just because you mentioned me in your story, lol.
| mblackzabini chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
Amazing chapter! One of the most interesting sorting hat scenes I have ever read, by a wide margin. Your sorting hat came across as very wise, with advice that even we mere muggles could use. That line about how there were no future signs to let you know when your path has a fork was really powerful.
| Darklion25 chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
So...now that this chapter has been released, will you be changing the previous chapter's title from Title Redacted Pt. I back to Self Awareness Pt. I?
As for the Ghostbusters thing in the previous chapter, I totally understood what you were doing with it and found it quite amusing, if a little repetitive. Apparently I was in the minority over that. As for why people don't like songs in fics, I think it has to do with the fact that most authors use them for sappy, romantic or whiny emo moments that don't really fit the tone of the rest of the story. Or they use the song to tell the story itself, which is just lazy in my opinion. Humorous parodies, like you used, are seldom used and even more seldom used well.
Oh, and my brain hurts now after reading this chapter.
| asdeed chapter 10 . 4/3/2010

| nolongerhereok chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
Your writing is interesting to read. I'm really bothered by Harry's character...not that he's badly written, but just the nature of it bothers me. His attitude towards things is very cavalier for someone who 'thinks things through'. I don't know if I should still believe in the idea that he really is still a child, just simply a brilliant one who has a reason to believe that he does know everything (well, not everything, but a lot. More than the adults at Hogwarts.), as many children are wont to do. Coupled with the Sorting Hat's ominous warning, I foretell VERY BAD THINGS to come before he either straightens up or just decides to go ahead and conquer the world.

Typo near the end.
"House of Doom be created just to accomodate Harry Potter or something"
| Thekilleregglord chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
Much better then my guess.
Also, Dark Lord Harry is awesome,
Epic Win, except you pulled your punch. In light of the serious tone of the chapter, and the discussion which reveals the profoundness of Harry's ambition and danger, Harry must go to Slytherin. The ending joke falls flat in light of the previous (excellently created) atmosphere of danger, and it makes it seem as though you cheated the reader of the sense of drama that you had previously created.
If you wanted to put Harry in Ravenclaw all along, you should edit it so that Ravenclaw is the last thing the Sorting Hat says. The joke isn't right for the Hat you've created.
| Team503 chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
I cannot possibly, in written words, convey the level of SQUEE I get when I read this story.
Write more, or marry me so I can mine you brain for more!
| Jim Starluck chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
I must say that I think I like this version of the Sorting Hat much, much better than the standard "sentient magical construct that reads your mind". Makes me very much wonder how, say, Culture!Harry from Ruskbyte's "Culture Shock" would respond to wearing it.
Also, it was good character development to see Harry have to confront some uncomfortable truths about himself, though it remains to be seen if he comes away a little more humble.
Also also, hilarious punchline is absolutely hilarious.
On a side note regarding the song from last chapter, it should be noted that Harry's first year is 1991. Ghostbusters came out in 1984 and Ghostbusters II in '89, meaning that all the Muggleborn kids there have almost certainly seen both of them, and the theme song *was* exceedingly popular. It may seem like a random pop-culture reference to us, but to them it was much, much more recent history. Heck, *I* was only 6 when the second movie came out, and I was still well aware of them by '91.
| Meteoricshipyards chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
Oh, LOL! That ending was excellent.
And the sorting hat was great.
But what was really interesting was that Harry was defending himself emotionally when he so prided himself on rationality; that he was fighting the rational, and somewhat informed, sorting hat with excuses and avoiding the actual reasons.
I wonder how he'll feel when he realizes this.
I was rooting for Hufflepuff, btw. And am a little sad that the H/Hr ship has already been set; I enjoy unusual ships, and Ravenclaw has the largest number of unused characters.
But anyway, great chapter; absolutely brilliant concept of the sorting hat.
| AngelForm chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
An interesting debate.
Maybe Harry’s chaos is infectious. Wonder how long it will take him to sneak into the Headmasters office to have another talk with that hat.
| Shadow of Flame chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
Wow...loved the ending. "Just kidding! Ravenclaw!" Wow. I find it hard to believe that I haven't read another story in which the Sorting Hat does something similar. And speaking of the Sorting Hat, from the books it seemed that it had some form of sedamentcy (is that a word?). It responded to Harry in CoS when he asked if he had been sorted into the right House...I also find your explanation of the how the Hat works slightly confusing. You are saying that the Hat basically borrows the child's intellegance and then shifts through their surface thoughts allowing whatever House they THINK they are best Sorted into to become their House? Great chapter, look foreward to more.
| Darchias chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
I am full of lulz.
| Hericus C chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
I liked the song! I found it hilarious and had no trouble knowing Harry played along with the prank.
This was a major first in fanfiction that the sorting hat wasn't a conscious entity-you know the sort they worn you about trusting if you can't see were their brains are kept!-most refreshing. It also shows just how stubborn Harry is but the argument was doomed if the hat couldn't back up it's Dark Lord claim with statistics and facts...perhaps a making Harry a true Ravenclaw after all.
| GinnyLover14 chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
I dont know if i like this chapter too much or not. It seems you are dooming Harry to become a Dark Lord.
| badkidoh chapter 10 . 4/3/2010

| LoireLoa chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
Harry SHOULD have been put in Slytherin. In his own words it's where budding Dark Lords go. Has the boy never heard the saying "The road to Hell is paved with good intentions"? Hitler thought he was doing the world a favor too, but we see how THAT turned out! Millions dead and him along with them, vilified for the rest of eternity and rightly so! that someone as logical as Harry would overlook such an obvious example of what NOT to do is mind-boggling!

| Violet Shadows chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
Amusing, the reversal at the end was a touch amusing, but mostly seemed out of place, while Harry's conversation with the hat was truly inspired: "I seem to have become self-aware." Priceless.
| Wolfric chapter 10 . 4/3/2010

| iota0000 chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
Heh, I can definitely see McGonagall seeing this "trick" played by the hat (rather than the warning it seems to have given) as being another symptom of Harry's contagious insanity.
I must admit the song in the previous chapter threw me off and similarly threw off the whole flavor of the fic so far, its not nearly so much as to preclude me from reading further.
Interesting chapter. It seems like the plot is actually beginning to take off at this point. Can't wait to see where it goes next.
| Leaping Lion chapter 10 . 4/3/2010

| Lady-Silvanas chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
It's quite interesting that in this scene we really see Harry to be just human, with all the faults and insecurities it comes with being human. To believe in his own grandeur and in believing that he comes from an age of Enlightenment that he would not fall for the lure of power, that is the only blindness men of great intellect oftens fall for. Those who believed in their own infalibilty often falls hardest and in their fall they often scorched the Earth with them. I hope you can create a mirror image for him to keep him grounded, of often prodigies live in their own world and they can't see how destructive their actions are to those around them. Great story by the way.

| Meneldur chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
Okay... this chapter was simply... scary. There is no other word for it. Or perhaps, to quote Ron Weasley 'Brilliant, but scary'.
Your ida for the Sorting Hat was the first one of its' kind I've ever seen. However, it made a great deal of sense, and seems to be supported by some parts in the books - on the other hand, it also does not agree with some of the books, where we see that the Hat has some prophetic power even before he is set over the head of one srudent (5th Year). Still, if we were following the books, this wouldn't be fanfic.
The whole discussion between Harry and the Hat was brilliant. It became scary when Harry turned out to be all too human. Even the greatest hero has a fear he cannot conquer - apparently, this was Harry's.
However, Harry is true in claiming he can stop himself. The simplest way to do so is that whenever he feels he has crossed some line, started the fall, he would go to the Sorting Hat, and see what he has to tell him.
I can't fully comment on the whole discussion, other than what I've already said. Thankfully, the last words provided a much-needed stress reliever, especially after the Slytherin announcement. For which I thank you. Until the next chapter, Meneldur.

| PeanutTree chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
OHYMYGOD I'm laughing and gasping for breath and I need a moment.
THIS chapter. THIS CHAPTER. Once again you astound me. The whole self-aware thing (how could I guess that?) and the Hat's wit, not to mention that it was JOKING at the end... and yet it was so serious! "Then the voice of the Sorting Hat came slowly: 'So you will risk becoming a Dark Lord, because the alternative, to you, is certain failure...'" This was my "ah-ha!" moment. Everything came together and I thought I could see a blurry path of Harry's future take shape... but knowing you, probably not. I'm probably looking at the path of Dedalus Diggle when I should be looking at the path over there, you know, the one overgrown with nettles and leading into an exploding swamp where candy alligators try to eat your Hocruxes. (Yeah, this analogy makes just about as much sense as your train of thought.)
| shadow-warrior93 chapter 10 . 4/3/2010

Oh man.. this chapter gave me the giggles. Definitely liked the argument, though I wish the chapter contained a little bit more of the post-sorting actions... maybe up until they went to their dorms. Oh well, looking forward to more of your work.
| Edengrave chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
Fascinating. So this is what's like to be completely surprised, by something utterly familiar. I had forgotten the feeling, of not knowing to some extent what would come up next, after reading so many fics.
you have also highlighted the limits of his self awareness, which fleshes out his character further
| Heidinanookie chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
ROFL! The ending was just... omg! So funny! The Hat really borrowed Harry's brains and personality. lol.
Where's the "My immortal" interpretation you promised us?
| Peanuckle chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
Hah! Excellent stuff. Good conversations are hard to find and your logical way of pursuing them makes for both interesting and enlightening reading. And the joke at the end made me laugh.
I also followed the links to your rationalist website. The articles there are very interesting, and reading the arguments put forth makes me think about things in different ways. Very good stuff.
| Majin Hentai X chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
Well that was cool so Ravenclaw Harry can't wait for him to find the room of requirement that will be fun.
Well I know exactly how the first book is going to play out. So how is Harry in terms of strategy has he read the art of war or is he combat inept.
Can't wait until the signature classes though he is going to start some brain failures.
Idea towards the end of the year have convince graduating seventh years to give him the final textbooks.
| Goldenfightergirl chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
lmao i think nobody have ever thought of doing a just kidding in a sorting
| DarkHeart81 chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
LOL. Good chapter. Leave it to Harry's prestigious brain to give the Sorting Hat sentience. The quote 'Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.' by Albert Einstein came to mind while reading this chapter, though now I can't recall what part of the chapter caused me to think of it. I can't help wondering if Harry would have left if he'd really been sorted into a house other than Ravenclaw, especially Slytherin.
| black-hurt17 chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
just kidding? :p you knwo it it would be funny if harry was visited in a dream bvy his alterante self who ws horrified what h ebecame when h estayed in ravenclaw and when harry wkes he demands to be put in hufflepuff :p and i thought since harry is so pessimistic and wants to prevent teh worst outcome he would prefer to be in hufflepuf thus prevnting that bad outcome of becoming a potential dark lord

| MrRobertsIII chapter 10 . 4/3/2010

| Taggart chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
Don't apologize unless you are truly sorry.
There were too many hints in previous chapters for Harry to be in any house but Ravenclaw, but my interest was piqued at the possibility of Hufflepuff. It would have been interesting to see your take on the house. But, exploring the quirks of Ravenclaw seems much more in your line of interest.
Good writing, good conversations. It was nice to see Harry interacting with an intelligence level near his own. A few good lines. "Frankly I do not enjoy being self-aware. It is unpleasant." This made me smile.
I do hope you consider to explore the issue between fulfilling potential and happiness in the story. That was the best motive Harry could have.
Initial research does show that Lee Jordan has a wizard father.
| MonCappy chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
The Hat is a complete bastard. I like him already. You have a very interesting Harry here. The sad thing about him is that the Hat is right about him. Harry has the seeds to be the worst kind of Dark Lord.
| Rhaegar Targaryen chapter 10 . 4/3/2010

| Bystander chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
Honestly, up to this point the story is absolutely awesome. The Ghost Busters singing I would call a minor, forgivable blunder. Maybe the referencing of rationalist techniques and books is a bit too heavy for those unfamiliar with those topics, but anyway, if they manage to pique some interest and direct some attention to Less Wrong, then it is okay for me.
I am familiar with the previous writings of this author and I personally respect him and his agenda tremendously. I wish him a smashing success.

| Kittenn1011 chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
*laughs* That was all hilarious, but I actually expected him to end up in Slytherin the whole time. He is cunning and ambitious after all, and with the hat he was acting exremely Slytherin.
Though the Sorting Hat does have a wicked sense of humour!
| Larry Huss chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
Very good job of keeping up the tension. Let's hope that Harry has an emotional memory good enough to keep this internal debate in mind when he decides to develope the Multi-guillotine Mk 1-A
| Aealket chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
Huh, that was a different take on the sorting hat. And now I hope Harry remembers some of the hat's warnings later. Ravenclaw will never be the same. But that could be a good thing for them.
Your Harry is very repressed in some things.
Thanks for the update. I will look forward towards the next.
| nonwritten chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
Gack! That was scary. Bloody Hat.

| Nitoskasaint chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
Good Lord n Heaven I have never laughed so hard in my life reading a story!. Excellent dialogue between the Harry I just never imagine the Hat being so clever and vindictive! Really funny and obviously Harry ought to be a Ravenclaw. Thanks for sharing and for you hard work.
| Potterworm chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
This was a really great chapter, and almost funny in a way. I liked the image of what everyone else was doing while Harry's sorting was going on.
| BenRG chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
A very interesting chapter with, I think, a unique perspective on the nature of the Sorting Hat.
I particularly liked Harry's conversation with the Hat and its perspective on choices and where the final, irreversable move may be. However, the significant line was this:
"So you will risk becoming a Dark Lord, because the alternative, to you, is certain failure, and that failure means the loss of everything. You believe that in your heart of hearts. You know all the reasons for doubting this belief, and they have failed to move you."
That was a brilliant assessment of the personality of Ravenclaw!Harry. We will now see if the Hat's grim prophecy that honing Harry's intelligence further will indeed make him cold and Dark or whether Hermione is the Joker in this particular hand (and, possibly, Draco too).
This story suddenly became very, very interesting and potentially a classic.
BenRG's Rating: 8/10

| Deritine chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
Hahah! Awesome. It was a bit anticlimatic at first, given all the hype, but you extrapolated to a really fun place.
PS- I really liked the song in the previous chapter, thought it was pretty funny. But I totally thought that he was under a compulsion and not acting along. Has he even seen movies? All you ever talk about is all the books he's read. In my experience, people (especially young kids) who are like that are totally socially retarded. At the very least, only aware of pop culture in the fringe references. So maybe Ghost Busters... but that's up for debate.

I love your diabolical mind, it drives me up the wall trying to keep up, then drops me down and lets me bounce around the room in fits of laughter! I love the prank let loose by the Hat's awareness, that was very cool! Your writing is superb, and I can't wait to read more!
| LunaMazes chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
I don't really know what to review. At first, I thought this fic is crack(and/or humour), the first few chapters sure read like it, then it went quite serious with Draco and Hermione, and became quite silly in sorting, with a song? And the Sorting Hat just made a joke in this chapter. I'm looking forward to the next chapter, wonder how it goes.
| dexterZ chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
THAT was EPIC. I've never saw that coming lol. Had me ROLFing for a bit
| Patricka chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
Even if this chapter was mostly an internal monologue with a Hat, it was much better than the previous chapter. And I loved the ending to this chapter. It made me laugh.
| Maloran chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
Mean, mean, mean! There goes another 3.2 on the Richter Scale due to face faults.
| Errrrr chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
Loved it totally!
| Rhianona chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
This is an interesting chapter. I don't quite understand why Harry is so against going into Hufflepuff or what he is afraid of failing. Definitely an interesting conversation with the Hat.
| red-jacobson chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
| EroSlackerMicha chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
That was insane. I do wonder if the teachers are going to be alcoholics or substance abusers by the time Harry graduates. (Actually by mid point of first year sounds reasonable.)
keep it up.
| xkayxvenx chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
Is it bad that I laughed at this story like I would a old person falling down on the sidewalk and skinning their knee? Like that kind of humor that makes you wonder "Why the hell 'em I reading/watching this I should be turning away?". \
Loved it though.

i liked the toons lol should have had the hat sing i got a lovely bunch of coconuts:P
| Allen Pitt chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
That was evil! And very funny. Hopefully he'll learn from the Neville incident. And he doesn't even realize that now Snape really hates him even more...
I liked the "whole new House of Doom" idea. Hm, too bad Snape doesn't have a sense of humor, he could insist that the "Slytherin" statement is the one that stands, and "Ravenclaw" was the joke.
"Sorry, the first House the Hat says is the one that counts!"
I'm really looking forward to him & Hermione working at figuring out the underlying laws of magic.
| Orchamus chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
That cheeky bugger.
| sad.ending.x3 chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
The line "SLYTHERIN" [...] "Just kidding! RAVENCLAW!" brought your story into my favorites. I laughed so hard. XD Thanks for writing that story! It is brilliant...
| witowsmp chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
The hat calling out Slytherin was mean...but funny.
| WaxWings chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
Thanks for the quick update. I guess that it helps when you have the chapter already written.
I am almost a little sad that the Hat decided to joke about sorting Harry into Slytherin. Harry was a little slow on the uptake, and it would have suited him to actually be sorted there.
I liked this chapter for the additional characterization given to Harry. Despite all that he might pretended, he is not perfectly rational, and will act irrationally even when it is pointed out to him.
I wonder how this flaw will play out in the future.
| happylady chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
I love it post more soon
Until next time
| pfeil chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
I completely agree that Harry would be happiest in Hufflepuff, here as well as in canon, but I see why he wouldn't accept that.
Shame that Hermione hadn't managed to talk the hat/herself into putting her in Hufflepuff - the doing good and hard-working side of her could have managed it, if prodded properly - and thus led Harry there as well.
But then, the coldness of being a 'claw is probably going to be needed for the future plot, so...
| jbfritz chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
| what are you even saying chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
Yep, Harry infected the sorting hat with his madness. It'll never be the same again.
Seriously, this was a really incredible update. I'm having a tough time deciding whose side of that argument I'm on. If I were both Harry and considerably more intelligent than I am, I would've made the same arguments. But the hat was more than reasonable as well. It's an interesting conundrum.
Looking forward to more.
| Harmony All The Way chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
Harry making the sorting hat aware of its consciousness ... is so so awesome.
I still cannot completely fathom what a rationale mind is capable of. :D
When the sorting hat said "Just kidding, Ravenclaw", I couldn't stop laughing.
Anyway, Keep the updates flow steadily.
| Arkeus chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
Nice. I like that the Hat is seeing the Danger of this Harry.
| Taure chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
I think you've taken GEB a bit too literally, lol. I think it's explicitly stated that strange loops are meant to be a metaphor for the way consciousness emerges, not actual consciousness itself... as he says, Principia Mathematica isn't conscious.
But then I guess GEB didn't take magic into account.
"And of those who did not heed the warning - did they all become Dark Lords?"
Nice addition there. Gotta have all 3 pieces of information, if you know what I mean. Given that you wrote the article I'm referring to, I assume so :p
The conversation seemed to get a bit melodramatic, and the hat seemed oddly insistent to do more than sort Harry - it wanted to psychoanalyse him too. But the results were interesting. I admit Harry's thought processes are somewhat similar to my own with regards to purpose in life and living up to potential. One has a sneaking suspicion that it would be better to be remembered for your greatness and be thought evil, than to be a good man but forgotten.
The story is still jumping all over the place, thematically. This chapter was serious without much humour, or much "rationality" themes. The previous was mostly humour. The one before that was mostly focused on "rationalism". I do not think that such a jumping-about works well. You can't be singing songs about dark lords one moment and then having a serious conversation about your deepest darkest impulses the next.
| J-Kid chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
NICE. I loved the sorting hat conversation. Very well done. :-) So Harry's in Ravenclaw, but not without a few hitches! Rather wish he'd been a Huff, but oh well. Ravenclaw's the next best thing. I can't wait to see what happens here even more as the story develops.
I think one of the reasons people have problems with songs in fanfiction (especially based on real ones) is that either the people who know the music by heart love it so much that they pick apart the tune and the words and meter and usually find it lacking, or they don't know the tune and therefore it has no meaning to them. Which is not to say that they can't look it up on Youtube or something equally mundane, but it's an extra step of work and then one has to translate over the new words to a new tune.
I'm actually in latter group for the song last chapter, for instance. I have never watched Ghostbusters, so this felt a little corny and silly (it was meant to be, so that's okay, though.) I'll have to rectify that someday I guess . . . .
| ImUpToNoGood chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
I was so convinced that Harry belonged in Ravenclaw, but this conversation made me root for Hufflepuff. As for the Hat's sense of humor: does the Hat realize that Madame Pomfrey will be flooded with near heart-attack patients in the near future?
I waited for this chapter before reviewing the last one... I was really afraid you might have jumped the shark with the last chapter, but this one was back in character. And it did, somewhat, bring the whole thing of the singing into some sort of context. It is more in character for potential-dark-lord!Harry to get into that song than the thoughtful accidental-chaos!Harry I really liked at the beginning. I think what made it hard is that by Harry getting into the song, he is: emphasizing the unthinking prankster, which is the part of him I don't like so much, and alienating Snape, who I want to get along with Harry, in his Snapish way. At first when I hated the song, it was because it seemed out of character for Harry. Now, I still don't much care for the way Harry got into the song, since it opens the way for plot directions / characterizations I am not so fond of, and reduces the likelihood of plot directions I am fond of.
Please, keep writing!
| Celestial Moonwalker chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
I'm rolling around laughing like mad! *grin*
This was the BEST conversation EVER!
And personally I have nothing against songs being used - if only a few and for the right reasons. I can only accuse you of putting Ghostbusters into my head for the rest of the day - but on my 'scale of weirdness' my behaviour that day ranked under 'Normal' so it doesn't really matter (which doesn't necessarily mean a thing if you consider the fact that I'm kind of crazy if other people are to be believed).
So I'm actually THANKING you for the absolutely THEIR Prank! It was brilliant! I kind of forgot to say that in my last review. *sheepish*
I bet Mcgonnagal's gonna celebrate...

| Artemis XIII chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
PS: I loved the joke at the end. Who knew that when the Sorting Hat awoke it would have a pranking personality?... Though if it borrows Harry's, of course he couldn't NOT say that.
| AStatine11 chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
never thought i would read harry being defeated in an argument.
loved the end. for a second there i thought there harry was sorted into slytherin but the "Just kidding, RAVENCLAW!" just cracked me up.
if u want to u can write a four-shot with ur harry interacting with each house. could be really funny.
just a quick question, is the whole story going to be funny or will there be a bit of seriousness?
Keep up the GREAT work and Thank You!
| Pommyth chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
Oh my god. I love your story...but really this chapter was really the most difficult one to understand.
| alichi chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
Uh, the beginning of that discussion has to have been the most useless sequence in your whole story. Seriously, statistics and dark lords? If 99 percent of all airplanes crash one shouldn't simply fear and avoid flying, one should ask WHY and fix it.
Fearing something simply because of statistics has got to be THE most idiotic fear in the world.
the hat looks at statistics of property salvaged from castle fires and demands to be stored outside of the castle...)
And why does the Hat have bias against dark lords? Not to mention it thinks Gryffindor is 'the most prestigious House'. The Hat said it itself(?) that it's simply in the business of sorting kids into houses, not try to convince the kids that they are potential dark lords. For that mater, everyone with enough power are potential dark lords... just takes the right(wrong?) kinda tragedy/push and there you go, a new dark lord.
With this chapter you reduced a likable scientis/rationalist/well-educated Harry to a boy with serious fears of being a failure and big delusions of grandeur. You'd think the Harry from previous chapters would think himself out of those problems...
This went from a fic about a Harry with pure ambitions of sorting out the magic in the magical world and with a quirk of being overly pessimistic in situations to a story about a Harry with mental problems... I seriously hope you sort this out.
That little realization by Harry at the end atleast gives me hope that your Harry will have solved some of his mental problems by the next chapter. Thou why you would want to bring up unnecessary, unwanted and unexpected problems in the same chapter that you solve them is beyond me...
I sincerely hope you ignore the majority of what went on in this chapter in the rest of the story, you killed the scientis/rationalist/well-educated Harry and alot of the humor with the introduction of this delusions-of-grandeur Harry.
Not to mention that whole rant about dark lords, statistics and the rest by the Hat was just incredible stupid and out of place in my opinion.
| Reeder chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
The whole thing would be so much better if you applied these "methods of rationality" indiscriminately. Not only when it suits you.
You know, it saddens me how people promoting rationality and independent thought are every bit as liable to build their views on something from propaganda as anyone. For example:
"the historical lessons of how Lenin and Hitler actually turned out"
Come on, get the other side of the story before making up your mind! It's not like anti-Soviet propaganda is a reliable source of information about the Soviet Union.
Not that I harbor any hope that you actually will find and read some memoirs of people not opposed to SU or will talk to someone who lived there and wasn't a dissident...
| chesney chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
heh, you deserve to be shot for this, but i couldn't aim straight from laughter
| DaveInACave chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
"I think therefore I am" comes to mind.
I'm sad I didn't figure it out, but I'm pretty sure your the only author I've ever read who used an entire good sized chapter for the sorting discussion alone. Your reasoning is spot on, and I have to say I like your version of the Hat. After all it would be kinda cruel of the founders to make a fully sentient Hat for one hour's work a year and sitting on a shelf the entire rest of the year.
The other thing that occurs to me after your "mirror by which children Sort themselves." line is that technically speaking that COULD easily mean (depending on your interpretation) that Slytherin is not JUST the house of the sly and cunning. It would be the house of those who think they fit in Slytherin as well. I'm sure the hat actually has it's work cut out for it for the students who don't care/don't know but if every student who walks in thinking "I DEMAND to be in X" gets into X, then X is partly just the house of those that want to be there. IE. Crabbe and Goyle. Hardly sly and cunning. And you already showed that the children do indeed make the choice themselves with Hermione and Neville, even before Harry's bout of arguing with himself. I wonder if Harry's going to figure it out, and if he does, whether he'll use it. I mean Draco's "proud Slytherin" identity doesn't mean nearly as much if the only reason he IS a Slytherin is because he asked and not necessarily because he fit what he thinks is the noble criteria. And even less if the only reason that a bunch of other people AREN'T Slytherin is because they didn't want to be. An elite club isn't so elite when they'll take anyone who really wants in.
It all depends on how much of what the Hat does is ACTUAL sorting and how much is just the mirror. I mean we've hardly got a large enough sample size (Of those sorted by YOUR hat with knowledge of the factors) to work it out based on data so really as much as we (the readers) theorize it all boils down to what you say it is. :P
| SonicBoombox chapter 10 . 4/3/2010

| Lthayer3 chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
Whoo! Much better than last chapter.
And I certainly didn't expect that to be the follow-up. Not because I didn't think it was possible, but because I've grown accustomed to an intelligent, self-aware Sorting Hat from other fanfiction stories. Although I've never seen it portrayed in quite this manner.
| Ershistalos chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
that was a pretty spiffy chapter, I really really enjoyed the argument/discussion between the hat and Harry. AND this sets up many potential "harder" encounters that will arise due to Harry being better/smarter/etc than in canon. Can't wait for the next chapter
| AiSard chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
| Darak chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
Just one part that disturbed me greatly, the hat persists and signs in stating that he doesn't have access to any memories of previous sortings, just general feelings yet it indicates it has a knowledge that occlumency exists, it has a knowledge of previous children passing by and chosing houses that would turn them dark ... how can this be if a) he wasn't self aware for any of these sortings and b) he has no access to memories just general feelings, how did he correlate those childs further actions from a moment where he just played his role of mirror to their psyche.
Somehow this all doesn't seem to work so I'll go with the second option : The hat is lying, has always been self aware and always held the memories of all children, he just decided to play a mind game with Harry to enhance his own sense that his self awareness being older than Harry's is more important. The strange thing is that Harry is letting himself be manipulated by forgetting to act as a scientist, it almost seems as if he's already so convinced of his own superiority that he can't think about his own actions and toughts as being wrong, in short the exact contrary of what a scientist should be.
| SilverLullabies93 chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
Is the Sorting Hat even allowed to joke!
| jamester56 chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
*whistles* Now THAT was a sorting! Though, I dislike the idea of Harry becoming a dark lord AGAIN... but overall, I don't mind the possibility, and can see the potential. On a happier note, I like the how-the-hat-works thing, and love that it pranked the school. That made me laugh. :D
| Dan chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
Well, he's certainly ambitious enough for Slytherin- Hufflepuff had me worried because the hat's reasoning simply wasn't sound enough. For all mish mash of trait present in Harry hardwork and loyalty, while present are eclipsed by the traits of the other houses. I thought this might turn into one of those fics where Harry goes to Hufflepuff as the author's idea of 'being different'.

| Serious.Effort chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
Holy crap you have a lot of reviews, do you even have time to read them all? lol. That's a huge number for a fairly new story - but yeah, it makes sense. This is brilliant. :D It makes me feel rather stupid sometimes too, so congrats on that too! Of course reading a story based on rationality when I'm about the opposite of ration in mindset.. well, whatever, I love reading it.
And yeah, I really didn't like the song either. Not because of the other reviewers reasons, I just hate the Ghostbuster's song. About the Lee Jordan thing - I assumed about the same thing about him, and didn't think anything was "off" or "plot-hole" about it.
Ugh, I need sleep, I keep re-writing every sentence I've written here about 3 times.
Sorting Hat vs Harry Potter(MoR version) was hilarious, btw. And thank you for writing such an awesome story. :D

Ok, I confess to being confused here...just what was the point of the entire Harry/Hat arguement?
| wolf550e chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
A wannabe Dark Lord could have been prepared for the eventuality of the Hat sending him where he didn't want to go and he would have been ready with a way to make everyone hear the Hat's voice saying "just kidding, [other house]".
Since you're interested in AI, will you be writing about magical portraits? Since they aren't based on anything like a horcrux, they're basically AI constructs, right?

| ARedHair chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
Great theory on the operation of the Sorting Hat!
I think it is unlikely that no student (or other wearer, such as a curious headmaster) has thought about the sorting hat's consciousness before, after all its has been in use for 10 years or so. However, the hat would have no recollection of that, so its claim "[t]his has never happened before..." would be correct from its perspective.
I don't think I've read anything that questioned its self awareness. I'm too polluted with fanfic to recall if canon ever has the sorting hat talk outside of the sorting. I'd always assumed it was somewhat like a magical portrait. The reflection idea is a very good alternative that explains why anything the hat sees in a students mind is never repeated.
I'm glad you're addressing Harry's prank on Neville. His justification of it to Hermione reeked of "the end justifies the means" and (manipulative) Dumbledore's "its for the greater good".
| hordac85 chapter 10 . 4/3/2010

| Baughn chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
..you're evil, you know that Eliezer?
Admittedly I laughed through most of the chapter. But that last joke was on me.
So. Apparently there's some great disaster Harry has to stop, and that belief is not caused by a horcrux or anything similar. I doubt it would be caused by evolution. Coupled with the existence of magic, therefore..
His universe is a simulation. I've said it before, I'm almost certain now. What I'm not sure about is the reason for its existence. There is no way Harry's little scientific revolution would be directly applicable to the outside world, which leaves three options - it's a game of some sort which he has to win, they're trying to create a specific kind of mind (and so expensively!), or it's an Eliezer gambit. The latter meaning something mere humans are unable to predict.
Good work, obviously. Do I even need to say that?

| SomeGuyFawkes chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
Interesting chapter that got tedious for a bit.
Well, you're right, I would have never guessed that about the hat.
That's because it is absolutely clear from canon, that the sorting hat was conscious and fully aware to begin with.
Review its conversations in HP1 and HP2 (and snippets in the other books). Note that it adapts its message in a conscious, self-reflective way that no AI algorithm (to date) could come close to. It does this both upon heads or upon shelves, so obviously it is not just borrowing brainpower. (Unless one of those ministry brains is kept under it while it's on the shelf?)
Hide it behind a partition and the hat would pass any Turing Test - perhaps even more reliably than you would. ;-)
Harry should've read "Consciousness Explained" as some of his (and the hat's) notions seem a bit off (EG: "internal supervisor").
}} Stupid unfair asymmetric telepathy, it wasn't even letting Harry finish
}} thinking his own -
This chapter is an excellent example of why all great men were "C" students. The "A" students worked for them - if they (the "A" guys) were lucky. Mucho over-analysis. If the sorting really was that important, then there would be ways to appeal or revise it.
Snape and McGonagall were nice comic relief.
Thanks for the update.

I, I , I think the sorting hat may be my new favourite character. (even though arguably as a reflection of the thoughts and 'processing power' of Harry himself the hat is Harry in raggedy cloth form. Hm)
Still the best and most original Harry Potter fic in a very long time. C:
I liked the Ghostbusters thing. The Weasley twins do seem like the sort of characters to willingly embrace muggle culture.
| Katamabob chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
I like the Sorting Hat :D Harry's a bit of a fool though, to be honest...
| Vilkath chapter 10 . 4/3/2010
Interesting conversation, though if it really is that smart and does care about what happens to a student by where they go you have to wonder about some of it's choices over the years. Draco for instance may not be dark lord material but he wasn't doing anyone any good being in slytherin, and given his sorting barely lasted half a second the hat didn't debate the issue with him either.

This is quite possibly becoming one of my favorite stories to receive updates for. You write with such authority, and with the sarcasm and dry wit, if i may, it is a story the likes of which I have never come across. Never before have I seen an entire chapter dedicated to just the sorting, nor would I ever imagine that I could be so enraptured by a chapter entirely dedicated to a sorting. It was utterly and magnificently written.
