Silvery Slytherins? Bravo Draco and Harry, that may be what saves House Slytherin from their own foolishness.
As for the Educational Decrees and the Auxiliary Protective Special Committee, that was an amazing scene. So wonderful. I can't wait to hear what Dumbledore and Quirrell think of this development.
Guest chapter 98 . 6/4/2016
This chapter has very nearly made up for the horrible event that sparked it. Emotional trauma forgiven.
Gnos fo Ytinrete chapter 98 . 5/4/2016
Okay. You caused me to clap IRL. The ending of the "Roles" chapter was a wonderful, inspiring moment. I LOVED it. I know it's soooo unlikely to happen in real life, but it fulfills the desire and hope in me where different people can come together and WORK together.

Overall this story is full of wonder, changes and expands your perspective, and is just delightfully written with a good balance between dark and humour and sometimes just straight-up dark humour. Gravitas was accentuated at the right moments which is impressive. The characters all go through character development: even the professors!

I love many of your ideas including what you're doing with Quirrel's role and I adore that Harry's homunculi are the four houses and the people close to him (and that Dumbledore is NOT one of the voices in his head but Neville IS is so in-character that I loved that detail). There are parts I don't like (like what you're doing with Hermione) but it is because you made me care that I'm able to react like this. I love works that make me react (like the afore-mentioned clapping). Wonderful.

I loved how the writing on Lily and James' tombstone fits perfectly into what you've built Harry into. The way you took JKR's world and somehow used that raw material and made it your own is absolutely wonderful. You may think I'm over-using "wonderful", but it is simply how this piece makes me feel: full of wonder and delight.

So. This is where I finally stop in my first session of reading this story. It's been about 6 hours now, and a very well spent 6 hours at that. I'm usually a fairly eloquent person, but words escape me at the present moment. What you have created here is nothing short of absolute brilliance. The conflict between science and magic is something that I always wished was explored in the world of Harry Potter, and you have taken that to the nth degree. This is by far the smartest fan fiction that I've ever read, in terms of comedic timing, character development, and overall feel. The references to Atlas Shrugged and David Foster Wallace bring a smile to a literature student's face. The scientific legitimacy of your claims make me wish I was more adept at science so that I could appreciate them more. This is a kind of story that can change lives. To be frank, I hazard the notion that I've enjoyed reading this more than the original series. You are truly a phenomenal author, worthy of heaps upon heaps of praise. Thank you.

Sooo, in the pile of vital research books Harry gave Draco was a copy of The Two Towers with that quote highlighted in red?
Or had he actually memorised all of Gandalf's stuff just to sound dramatic when re-entering Hogwarts?
And also...there is no official proclamation nor actual edict from the governors themselves even though all of them can teleport instantaneously to Hogwarts and none of them work for a living?
Lazy buggers.

Holy Shit this fanfic is amazing 3 days almost without sleep.
I was okay with HP but THIS! With all the HP lovegood, LoTR, WH40k, Star Wars and Trek and Enders Game references, I almost died of multiple simultaneous nerdgasms.

Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality is the BEST Fanfiction and among my best reads, sitting among my 'best' bookshelf with JRR Tolkien, Scott Orson Card,Tom Clancy and Robert A. Hienlein.

Looking Forward to chapter 99.

Delta chapter 98 . 12/2/2013
I think I've worked it out. Harry saves Hermione by bypassing the arbitrary 6hours/day timeturner limit. He does this by taking advantage of the similarly arbitrary nature of a 'day', travelling in the right direction at such a speed that he experiences multiple 'days' in under six hours. I'd call this a cheap and unbelievable hack, but actually:

1. I think I'm the first person to suggest it, so by analogy it's plausible that no-one in the wizarding world thought of it.
2. Any wizard capable of thinking like this would test it with Apparation and/or Floo and/or phoenix-travel, which, being a powerful wizard, they would have access to; but it's entirely possible that all forms of teleportation wouldn't work because reasons. Also, they don't have the rocket-powered broomsticks needed to physically move that far that fast.

Once he can travel an arbitrary amount of time into the past, he can basically do anything: such as saving Hermione, letting her live out her natural life (or several trillion years, if he can both achieve immortality and talk her into it), then maintaining the timeline by sending her back to her observed death while polyjuiced as her younger self.

(Another, more Harryish way to exploit the six-hour rule would be to physically speed up the Earth's rotation so that there are more than six hours in each day. But I think my one would be easier to implement.)
Stronger123 chapter 98 . 11/29/2013
Amazing! You're a really good writer, and that was an awesome chapter :)
Alia chapter 98 . 11/27/2013
So… Were they live millipedes transfigured into something else, or were they something else transfigured into live millipedes? If the former, wouldn't being transfigured kill the millipedes, or does it only work like that with humans? (For instance, in canon, they practiced transfiguring live animals into drinking goblets.) If the latter, what was gross about it, and why call it "transfigured live millipedes" as opposed to "transfigured whatever-they-got-transfigured-into" as that seems to be the way people talk in this universe?
fudtrip19 chapter 98 . 11/26/2013
this a very wonderful story.
An excellent fanfic.
will look forward to your updates :D
Telchar chapter 98 . 11/24/2013
Great fanfic, excellent storytelling en structuring, and I really like what you've done with most of the characters (Lucius and Draco are made of awesome now, instead of rich gits, without draco-in-leather-pantsing them).
Three points
1) Harry & co are just eleven, and they're throwing around seventh-year spells and making decisions they shouldn't even be able to think about till twenty years later and basically just being far more adult then they are supposed to be.
2) You're starting to have Harry solve every problem you throw his way. I'm looking forward to how he'll deal with Hermione's death, and I hope that'll give him some real challenge, but if Harry can escape out of Azkaban without having a Patronus up with a dozen of the best war veterans in Britain when he's eleven, he'll be able to burn down the universe by the time he graduates Hogwarts.
3 I think you're being rather unfair to McGonagall in Roles (it certainly is nothing like how she behaved at the start), and you're flanderizing a few of the other characters too. It's fine for now, but a very slippery slope.

Now for the positive points:
1 You write some excellent political plots and complications. Really, I love them.
2 The character development for the Hogwarts students is excellent. Subtle, shown not told, and yet noticable. Very good.
3 You're writing style is very good, in all respects.

I'm looking forward to the next installment

Myta chapter 98 . 11/23/2013
I am writing the review in this chapter because its the most recent chapter available right now, but I am refering to the whole book. It took me a little less then two weeks to read through the 98 chapters available.
Also english is not my first language and I am a physicist, so if something I write sounds a little strange its probably because my vocabulary is not optimized for literary criticism.

In short, I think this is one of the best fictional stories I have ever read, maybe the best.

Your story is extremly funny, I am not sure when the last time was that I laughed that much because of a novel, maybe when I read my first books from Terry Pratchett a long time ago. Maybe.
It is enthralling. Not every chapter the same, but some are great, TSPE really sticks out here.

But most important: it is intelligent.
There is a lot of stuff that botheres me with the original Harry Potter and with most fantasy novels, for example:
Why does no one thing of the consequences of warped laws of nature? If I can do x with magic then I could do y, and y is a gamebreaker, why does no one try it?
Consequences: if I have a world where b is possible, then c shouldnt occur and is obvously only in there because its so in our world.
What are the limits of magic, the rules? Why cant anyone do z or why does no one try it? Most important: why does no one try to figure out the rules? Are there rules at all?
Or just why does no one see how stupid an idea/behavour is.

You get that right. Its great to read a story where the author actually tries to think of this stuff. A story that has actually intelligent characters with a scientific background. Characters that draw logical conlucions not bat deductions. And the flaws they have in their reasoning still seem fitting to an intelligent charakter, not just there because the story needs a stupid decision. Describing everything I loved about this would take way too much space, so I just say: Brilliant.

Also a big plus: the science and experiments. I alread knew most of them, but not all, I guess everyone who reads this story is a little wiser afterwards :)

So much for the praise, now a little criticism: somewhere in the first third, cant remember exactly where, I had the feeling that the story might loose its originalty. That it evolves into a standard, "adventuring boy in a magic school" story, just that the protagonist is a little smarter then usual so he has a few good solutions to problems. I think it was around the time Harry used his time turner to escape Snapes lecture: good idea, but nothing special.
This 'learning to loose' fell under the same category: a standard fantasy story/cliche. Also there was a 'mistake' in there: These n-th degree black belt, hidden monastary etc. guys usually arent especially good fighters. Sure they are better then untrained fighters, and maybe they can do some impressive feats (like shaolin monks), but this is mostly tradition, rituals and show and in my experience a good amount of the rituals are just there to allow a black belt to seem important despite the fact that he cant fight.
In a real fight I would bet my money on a boxer, thai boxer, bjj fighter any day of the week. This superior asian styles is just a cliche and while you didnt explicitly say so, the opinion of some of the most experienced and intelligent charaters (Voldi and Quirrel) makes it seem like a fact in your world.
Its only a small point, but it sticks out when the rest of the facts mentioned seem to be correct.

Keep on writing!
Midnighter 13 chapter 98 . 11/21/2013
This ending was an amazing and incredibly dramatic scene. You have had a ton of very good dramatic scenes and each seems to become better than the last. Each raises the tension a little higher, and lasts a little longer than the last. Excellent work. I can't wait for the next major climax. A suggestion. Harry is essentially alone now, without any allies he can truly depend on permanently, with the possible exception of the Weasly twins. If he has no permanent allies, little wealth, and only fame and logic to rely upon, he is going to lose. My suggestion is to have him gain either wealth or allies (one but not both) over the next few chapters, giving him a better chance against his various enemies and erstwhile allies who are also enemies when he feels like it (Dumbledore being a prime example). For wealth I would suggest using something magical now that could create wealth in the muggle world during the summer. For allies, Chaos Army would be a great place to start forging an actual combat force loyal to Harry first, others second.
DarthLizardWizard chapter 98 . 11/20/2013
I too was confused about the part in the book about the deathly hollows destroying death and that it was about accepting death. That to me was clearly faulty reasoning. It was as if someone said, "When you drink water you are no longer thirsty," and then someone else says, "They meant that you must accept being thirsty forever even if you could find a way to find some water." I know it's not a perfect analogy and I could probably come up with something better if I spent more than five seconds trying to come up with something, but it at least conveys somewhat of broken logic.

On a different note, I can't believe Hermione died! It was even an extremely painful and gruesome death to boot. I wonder if the gore warrants changing this story to mature? Regardless, I was so sad, but at the same time glad that now Harry is stepping up his plans for godhood and whatnot. That it was cemented by the motto of his own family felt quite nice. It does seem a bit of a stretch to think he might succeed in his first year. I was thinking more of him succeeding in his third year, but then again he has already uncovered secrets to power in both transfiguration and potions. Now he just needs charms and rituals.

On that note I wonder what Harry will start researching first? Will he begin to research alchemy since he and Hermione discussed it? Also, it would be interesting to see if he could research how trolls regenerate and try to apply that to himself. After all, it wouldn't do to have a potion to never age, but have an simple accident kill you.

I also wonder why Dumbledore doesn't want Harry in the Hall of Prophecy, or whatever it's called. Now we know that there are at least two prophecies in there now that we know about the new one spoken in front of Professor Quirrell. What if there are more though? He has to eventually get there, but it might take awhile.

One last thing. I know Dumbledore said that the phoenix only comes once, but who is he to say that? Has there been a series of gathered data that points to that conclusion, or is it a bias of some sort? Regardless if it's mostly true Harry has been shown to do the impossible in this story, so he may still gain a phoenix familiar. If not it must be something equally impressive.

I look forward to more.
Ozimandias chapter 98 . 11/18/2013
I cannot fully express how impressive I find this work. I have usually avoided fanfics as a rule in the past, finding them to generally just scratch the itch of the reader to resolve the story happily ever after for their personal favorite characters. I heard of this and expected something much the same, but instead got a piece of fiction that is both thought provoking And incredibly well-plotted with beautiful and subtle foreshadowing and incredibly intricate characters. In my opinion it is the only such work that not only does justice to the original author's world but surpasses and improves it.

I'd love to throw some of my own theories about what is going on, I haven't read many other reviews so sorry if I repeat commonly thought or discarded ideas.
If you want to discover the purpose of a Plot, First ask who benefits - but before you can ask that you have to ask what people want.

Motives of the Main characters:
Voldie purposely put part of his personality into Harry (marking him as his equal) in an effort to make himself a worthy opponent. After trying and succeding in his bid to immortality(implanting his soul in the Voyager Probe), Voldemort declared war simply to amuse himself, to try to challenge himself and make life more interesting. He could have defeated Albus at any time, but chose not to in hopes that someone would present himself as a true challenge, someone he could enjoy defeating and plotting against.

The original Quirrel tried to attack Voldie and failed, which was when Voldie decided it was best not to kill his enemies, but resolved him to create a truly worthy adversary. Probably also the time when the prophecy about Harry was first spoken. Now Quirrel's burnt out husk is imbued with Voldie's remaining soul. The world bores him, but he is grooming Harry Potter as someone who can actually interest him and challenge him as an equal. In the meantime, he entertains himself with small plots and prepares the way for Harry.

Albus wants to defeat his enemies - primarily Voldemort. He will go to great lengths and plots well in advance. He is not afraid to sacrifice to achieve his goals. However, in believing that sacrifice is necessary to defeat enemies, he ignores the possibility of true victory, and takes no joy in such and does not attempt plots that have no cost. His instinct toward sacrifice has put him at odds with Harry, perhaps making them true enemies.

Snape no longer cares about Lily Potter, now his only motivations are attempts at redemption and vengeance upon those who wronged him. Presumably most of his vengeance is aimed at Voldemort and now perhaps Dumbledore, both of who used him terribly. Particularly if he finds that Dumbledore used him to try to destroy Voldie. If he is clever enough, he might determine a good way to hurt Voldie is by hurting Potter.

Mysterious characters:
Mr Hat and Cloak - (appearing to Blaise in Chapter 35): Quirrel not wanting Albus to know about his own involvement and his manipulation of Harry.

Mr Black Hat/Mrs White - (Hermione, Chapter 77) - Also Quirrelmort, who set up Hermione in much the way Harry described in Chapter 79. His purpose way to mould Harry Potter into the type of adversary he wanted, someone more like himself and not reliant on/influenced by others. This is hinted at with the 'Hello Again Hermione, despite her not recognizing the mysterious figure in any way.'

Whoever killed Hermionine: Quirrelmort.

Prophecy interpretation:
Trelawny 1: I believe, as Harry does, that portions of this prophecy have been removed by Albus. The rest I've explained in other sections above.
Trelawny 2: Harry potter will learn to harness the sun’s/star power a la Dyson Sphere or similar technology. He will usher in a new age of peace and the world as we know it will be 'destroyed' when death is defeated.

Alternative to 'Voldemort is making Potter into his ultimate adversary' is that Voldie is planning to set up Harry as a ruler and they will fight a final battle inside Harry's own mind, for those two spirits cannot exist in the same world (body). The Remembral that glowed when Harry held it was showing that all Voldemorts memories had been removed, but that Harry really is Voldemort in more ways than simply having a part of his soul. Which is why Harry might be Albus's enemy as well which Albus hints at several times and is probably said in the deleted sections of prophecy.

Tl;dr: I freaking love this story.
blackswirlycloakguy chapter 98 . 11/15/2013
I do not often write reviews, because frankly I am not very good at them. They are either too short, or over critical, or some other fault. However, you need a review right now, because your current reviews appear to be written by idiots. You are not showing off. You are not trying to do some 'super-smart-science-lesson'. Just because something is a leisure activity doesn't mean it shouldn't STRETCH ONES MENTAL FACULTIES. The people who casually DISMISS your Harry as UNLIKEABLE for responding to the fact that children are still viewed as subalterns is not only incredibly annoying, but proves Harry's point for him.

Ahem. Review.

There are few works of fiction in existence that contain well-developed characters that act consistently within the rules of the universe and the personalities developed by the author, who change and grow as the work of fiction does. There are even fewer which are also intelligent, with interesting, thought-provoking statements about the nature of human acceptance of death and science and politics. There are still FEWER which are also rib-crackingly hilarious, and well written, and which manage tonal and emotional transitions as naturally and seamlessly as the universe itself does. You may have noticed that the set I'm describing pretty much describes this story.

It is, without a doubt, one of the best, and most INSPIRING, cultural works I have ever come across. Despite your Harry's intelligence and his glorious view of science, he is not perfect, and thus he is human. There are some minor quibbles I could raise; it strains plausibility a little that this all occurs in first year, the episodic format leads to timeskips that feel weirdly jarring at times, and some characters' motivations seem opaque (though these tend to be explained in later chapters). Thank you so much for writing this - I can only hope that you continue to do so.

As a side note, you are a complete and utter bastard for chapter 89. A glorious bastard, but a bastard nevertheless. I was expecting a nice relaxing plotline after the Draco-near-murder. On the other hand it's completely brilliant, so I won't complain too much.

ahhhhhh, I have come to the place that's currently the end of this story.
I had never expected that chapter 98 would still be in the first year of hogwarts education for Harry.

I admire your rationality skills and your writing skills.
Please never abandon this story, I hate it when good stories are abandoned when there is already a lot of work invested in them.
aaronmicalowe chapter 98 . 10/18/2013
To the author - look after yourself. I'm currently suffering the physical effects of a burnout and I can tell you it's not pleasant at all. Be careful not to overwork. Your body is a machine and has limits like any other machine. Please look after it.

I'm still missing Hermione from the story. Even if Harry can bring her back it wouldn't be the same Hermione. I've often felt that her character wasn't as fleshed out as Harry's and she sometimes came across a bit ditsy. To me Hermione was always very bright and intelligent and I felt she deserved more - not as a female but as a human being. But I also recognise that stories require a momentum and if every character is fleshed out then it can drag on. Still, I feel like Hermione has been brushed under the carpet so that the plot can be carried on for Harry, of that Hermione was just a plot device to force Harry into some dark decision. Storywise - has Harry considered that Hermione's murder may have been carried out to unhinge him in this way. He may be experienced in thought but he is still a young boy and lacks experience in hormonal emotions. These do not necessarily always follow a logical path - or rather can effect you before your logic has had time to reflect on what's happening. So much of what Harry does seems reactional - I question how mature he is. Maturity has little to do with intelligence. A person can be a genius and still be very emotionally immature.

A lot of readers don't understand this chapter and think this was a move by the first years. It isn't, they are doing exactly what their parents instructed them to in a planned political maneuver.
Stop complaining about it being unrealistic, twelve year olds are capable of giving a prepared speach if given sufficient training and noone else is acting because this is obviously a political symbol by these houses.

foolondahill17 chapter 98 . 10/7/2013
I've held off reviewing this story because I wanted to wait until I knew exactly what to say and how to say it. So I've been thinking and thinking, trying to find the right words, and have finally come to the conclusion that there aren't any. This is riveting and intriguing, the only chaptered fic that I have actually read all the way through (no skimming). It's intelligent and entertaining and I cannot wait to read how it all comes out. To the author: you should definitely consider revising this into original fiction. It is simply too incredible to be stuck forever as fan fiction.
As for my hypothesis, I think Professor Quirrell is Voldemort, who - in some crazy twist of time-travel - is actually Harry. When Harry becomes an adult, he obviously got passed the 'only-go-back-six-hours' restriction, discovered that Voldemort is really possessing him (the sorting hat is Wrong), goes back to his first year, disguises himself as Professor Quirrell, kills Hermione in order to make past-Harry into the Dark Lord he will later become, and quietly buys his time as the past-Harry discovers he and Professor Quirrell are one in the same and goes back in time, starting the circle over again. Harry comes out of his disguise as Professor Quirrell and takes over the world. I don't think that was very comprehensive.
Also, I hope I am correct in reasoning that when you say you're coming up to the last arc, you mean the completion of the story, not simply the end of the first book in a seven book series.

It's a Harry Potter story, not any science class. You don't need to show how clever you are. And can you please just end the goddamn story.

Thank you for your awesome fanfiction. It did definitely change my way of thinking and I suppose it did improve my English. I hope I will have time soon, to write a decent review. I was going to since I started reading this brilliant work. Also I am thinking about doing some fanart (indirectly fanart was the way I found the fanfiction).

GlitterTrails chapter 98 . 9/23/2013
So not only has this story been extremely mind-expanding and addictive, it has also infiltrated my dreams. A couple nights ago I had dreams about the after-school armies shooting each other with magical armored tanks and then last night I had a dream where Dumbledore admitted to killing Hermoine and then laughed about it. I was like "Dude! Why would you do that Albus?!" and then I woke up. This story dude, it just permanently alters the way you think. Awesome.
Marcus Livius Drusus chapter 98 . 9/22/2013
The main flaw with this, I think, is that Harry doesn’t really earn his abilities. He levels up so quickly, there’s no drama in it. No hard work. No desperation to improve. No setbacks. No consciousness and frustration. He has this unworldly intellect, and it cuts through his challenges like they’re nothing. I thought his study of magic would be interesting and difficult, but that was put on the back-burner ages ago.

The interaction between Quirrell and Harry is very good. Their dialogue is the best part of the story. Quirrell seems to be the unmovable object to Harry’s unstoppable force, yet only now are they moving against one another. It seems they’ll just pass through each other without any interesting conflict.

The author is very intelligent, and this intelligence often leads to novel characterization. Bellatrix’s sad complex is a particularly good example of this. Yet Harry himself if a Mary Sue. He’s playing three leagues down from where he should be and it all seems a bit unfair to everyone else.

I think LessWrong is a formidable writer, but he’s just coming into his powers and this initial effort is clumsy. I have a feeling, however, that his next fic (if he writes one) will great.

Ok, so first: holly crap this still hasn't gotten past year one.

Second- I would suggest you think about writing your own fantasy/sci-fi book. I like this fanfic, but after what I have read i really want to what you'll come up with. Just you know, let us know what the tittles is and the release date is going to be (well if it ever happens).

Just caught up. Hoping it won't end too soon.

The kids announcing together was silly.

Everything else is solid. Thanks and keep writing.
Anonymous chapter 98 . 9/17/2013
My god, it's a coup. They held a coup.

That said, I think this chapter emphasizes one of the major problems with this story - the viewpoint characters are too young. They're all 11-12, and while I've known some rather precocious personalities, this level of discourse doesn't feel natural in their mouths, especially Harry's. I really feel the story falters a little every time something hinging on them being first years comes up - I feel that age is a little too young to be believable. The last scene here, with the morass of first-years dictating terms to the school, complete with spec-ops back-up, seems like a horrifyingly contrived Frankie Muniz power fantasy.

That said, the fundamental problem with Harry as a character in this story was well-explored in the prior chapters, in which he barely held himself together while struggling with grief. Realizing Harry's age at the time makes Quirrel seem more cruel than wise.

Why people love this fic so much i will never understand. During all of this Harry is always a little wining bitch, who always over-thinks and struts around like he is someone special. I don't mind longer fics but this one is way too long 500k words and still 1/2 of the first year. So Nope. Not reading.
The Red Dementor chapter 98 . 9/14/2013
Woot. So, when will the next arc begin? and will it be uploaded as a separate story?
miyasudokoro chapter 98 . 9/13/2013
The children making a speech, one after another, was so overbearingly silly that I couldn't even read it. It reminded me of those super-boring school plays where they give every kid in the class a part by assigning him or her one line of the narrator's script. The main reason it was ridiculous is that these are first-year students dictating a bunch of rules that the oligarchy is imposing on the school, and doing so in the most overdramatic way possible. No, we're not going to quietly hand the headmaster the new set of rules for him to announce. No, we're not going to post the rules for everyone to read. Instead, we're going to take turns reciting them in our squeaky baby voices.

For one thing, why would older students pay attention to a bunch of pipsqueaks mouthing off about what their parents want, even if those parents are in the oligarchy? I would expect more people than just Fred and George to immediately start mocking them for their overdramatic method of announcing outside interference at Hogwarts.

For another thing, if these rules are truly backed by the kids' parents, why aren't those parents themselves present at the school to make this announcement? Why would all of these kids' parents be so sure that they, at age 11/12 and with no experience, can successfully represent the family without embarrassing them? Wouldn't they at least show up to watch? Even if entry into Hogwarts is tightly controlled, it makes no sense that anyone capable of imposing rules on the school would not be able to enter the school. Plus, if they can't even go there and stand up for their rules, how do they expect anyone to take their support for those rules seriously? I mean, letting their kids do the announcing sounds to me like a great way to save face later on when they deny ever having made any such agreements and blame their children for misrepresenting them. A rule with that level of plausible back-out-ability is not one that I would take seriously.
Guest chapter 98 . 9/13/2013
Regarding Harry's suggesting that the twins read Atlas shrugged, do remember this reference from Ch 20:

"Not to mention," Harry said, "being a Dark Lord would mean that a lot of innocent bystanders got hurt too!"
"Why does that matter to you?" Professor Quirrell said. "What have they done for you?"
Harry laughed. "Oh, now that was around as subtle as Atlas Shrugged."
"Pardon me?" Professor Quirrell said again.
"It's a book that my parents wouldn't let me read because they thought it would corrupt me, so of course I read it anyway and I was offended they thought I would fall for any traps that obvious. Blah blah blah, appeal to my sense of superiority, other people are trying to keep me down, blah blah blah."

I think that indicates pretty clearly, that Harry is not in general a fan of Atlas Shrugged.
Guest chapter 98 . 9/13/2013
I must say, the class system in the wizarding world is astonishing, and for a Harry who received modern education to endorse and even enhance this system is even more astonishing. In addition, it's not only unreasonable, but extremely unsafe to have all your children together in one year, think wizarding wars I and II that literally wiped out entire generations (ever wonder why very few grandparents etc were mentioned, and Hogwart's defense were left to student?).

There's no reason to act through these students except to enhance their control over the student body, a change most people probably don't like to see, such concentrated power cultivated from childhood, gathered in the hands of a few people is never a good thing.

And the Hogwart's top 3% (keeping in mind there's only 300, 400 students according to Rowling) is significantly smarter and more capable than the Hogwarts top 25%. And honestly, reality doesn't work like that, at least the muggle one doesn't.
SykoelfSwandark chapter 98 . 9/12/2013
UGH, now I'm reading everything over at TVTropes and I'm QUESTIONING EVERYTHING I JUST WROTE.
SykoelfSwandark chapter 98 . 9/12/2013
There's more that I forgot to say..

I also don't think it's Voldy because in the name of reasoning and evidence, you have given nothing truly convincing that he exist and is back. In your alt HP world, reasoning and evidence are the standards against all, and considering that, Voldy seems like a red herring/straw man. Bad things happen and we've got no one to blame, and he said he'd come back, and even though we have no definitive tangible proof that he did, we're gonna say it was him anyways. It's a logical fallacy. And the thing is, even Harry starts to think it's possible, so either I missed some chapters by accident or Dumbledore is so set in this belief that he has the rationalist considering it without any actual proof.

And something else about morality and rationality... I think that the intersection of these two concepts is the most intriguing bit about the whole fic.. Where does rationality lead morality to? How does morality hinder rationality? Honestly these are the two opposing points I see happening most often with Quirrell symbolizing the former and Dumbeldore the latter.

So maybe it wont end up being either of them who ends up the bad guy because how is one of these questions worse than the other really?

Eh I don't know, like I said I'm bad at predictions, but I really do like asking questions.
SykoelfSwandark chapter 98 . 9/12/2013
Ok, so I stumbled across this fic during my many hours on Reddit, and just spent the last four days reading through all the chapters and I have somethings I would like to say.

1. I miss all the experimenting that was happening at the beginning. Though it seems like you are condensing all seven books' worth of plot in one year, which makes it convenient for you and Harry, because, of course then he'll be able to make some proper scientific breakthroughs without all this silly plot nonsense. However I am concerned that his moral compass did just die... Especially if you consider Harry's dark side which could be some residual aspect of Voldemort or just come psychological quirk (which I could look up maybe but I'm lazy) AND Trewlany's prophecy/Quirrell's warning that Harry could experiment without any bad intentions, not realizing the danger he is putting others in and then destroy everything. It really could go either way for this kid. But then again, maybe that he now has Hermione's "voice" in his head, this may help guide is inner moral compass? I suppose we'll see.

2. WHO IS MR. (MRS.?) HAT AND CLOAK AND WHY HAVEN'T WE SEEN THEM AGAIN? It seems like there are three main villains so far - Quirrell, Dumbledore, Other. First - Quirrell is a very puzzling character in all honesty. There is a sense of doom surrounding him (only felt by Harry...), and his cynicism and moral ambiguity, you just can't tell if he's a bad guy or a good guy and it doesn't help that JKR wrote him as Bad and kept him on the sidelines, while you keep him as a main character THAT DOESN'T WEAR A TURBAN. But then, the way you paint Dumbledore is very similar... He is a very ambiguous character, you are always left wondering what his true motives are, whether he is indeed good and acts for morally just reasons, or his age has left him believing that his actions are morally sound while not realizing that in actuality they are selfish and perpetuating a divide that his unnecessary. Honestly, there seems to be a strong dichotomy between Quirrell and Dumbledore whith Harry's moral side laying nearer to D and his rationality nearer to Q. Though not completely to either of course, as we see through his constant wariness and mistrust of them both. As for the Other... I do not in all seriousness believe it is Snape or Voldemort or any other figure we've seen listed through Harry's eyes. I say this because for all the talk about Bad and Good the most important characters are all morally ambiguous. Harry himself is constantly questioning his morals, Dumbledore seems to be steered in a steadfast direction, with very clear moral reasons guiding him, but as is constantly resaid, sometimes you do something for a good reason with a negative outcome, or you do a bad thing to have a good outcome, so what is the truly good moral act? Quirrell is deeply ambiguous morally, which is kind of obvious really (saving Draco, wanting to be a Dark Lord, etc). You haven't fleshed out Snape as one of these deeply interesting morally ambiguous characters and it would fall a bit flat if it was him all along. I don't think it's Voldemort because I have been convinced by Harry's brain/soul argument. But he has been shocked by magic's flagrant disregard for the rules of the human body and physics so his brain/soul thing could be wrong, but at the same time you haven't written anything that has truly been about Voldemort, we haven't seen him at all really, not in Horcruxes, or much of anything else. I think we would've seen more of him by now if he had come back. And then there is Hat and Cloak which really need solving up (though I just now reread that chapter and my personal theory is that it is Hermione's ghost...). Anyways, even though I think Q and D are pretty suspect, I'm not discrediting anyone. It could be Snape or Voldy, or a bunch of people or Lord Malfoy (even though Harry absolved him, I'm not entirely sure about it), or even Harry, I mean for all we know he could be running around doing awful things while blacked out on his dark side (either possession like from HPatCoS or some psychological condition that I dont know much about)... But since you've put so many plot points in (like 7 books worth) without any of the main villains or devices, I am left confused about what might happen. Which, btw, I really like that you have deviated from the main books so much, it feels very very refreshing.

3. No matter how this ends though, I think a good very future ending would be Draco as Chief Warlock, Harry as headmaster with a seat on the Wizengamot. Draco is great at the politics game as we know, and Harry would have power with a seat placement as well, they would be a good balance for each other. And I think Harry with his thirst for knowledge would be able to experiment and learn and push the magic-science boundaries further with the help of Hogwarts, plus I think he'd be able to push students to do better, and the way he seems to be developing will hopefully make him compassionate enough to deal with children...

But honestly, though I love asking myself these questions and pondering all the points, I don't like to make conclusions about what I think will happen. It spoils a bit of the fun of reading fiction. And as many many others have said before, HOLY CRAP, this is by far the most unique and challenging fanfiction I have ever read. I mean it pushes the boundaries on what a fanfiction story can and should do. So for that I deeply applaud you and I can't wait until the other story arcs are published.

Guest chapter 98 . 9/5/2013
Absolutely fantastic story, but then that pretty much goes without saying. I really hope Harry finds a way to bring Hermione back. I was thinking that practically everything might have been orchestrated my Mr Hat and Cloak, who wants Harry to fulfill his destiny to conquer death or something, by giving him the hallow, and trying to get him to destroy the dementors by getting Hermione sent to azkaban. When that didn't work, he had her killed so he can bring her back to life. He took the body to keep it someplace safe. Well that's my theory. Probably completely wrong but the possibilities are definitely intriquing.
Arakasi86 chapter 98 . 9/5/2013
Like many people the world over, I think that your story is amazing! I only wish I could write half so well as you. There are a great many parts of the story that I find fantastic, so I'll just say that your spin on the HP-verse really shattered my conception of what fic could be.

Patiently awaiting the final arc.

And then Hogwarts was a police state. Quirrel is a magnificent bastard.
Shagbark chapter 98 . 9/4/2013
It was a strange kind of selfishness, they thought, that Harry could understand kindness within himself - never dreaming of asking of money from anyone he'd helped more than they'd helped him, or calling that a debt - while being apparently unable to conceive that others might want to act the same way toward him.

"Remind me to buy you a copy of the Muggle novel Atlas Shrugged," the sourceless voice said. "I'm starting to understand what sort of person can benefit from reading it."

This is an example of something nice I see more often in the later chapters-presenting views that Harry holds, that are popular on LessWrong, and punching little non-fatal but problematic holes in them.
David Orton chapter 98 . 9/3/2013

YlvaThorgalsdottir chapter 98 . 9/1/2013
You have gotten better at writing girls.

I am so looking forward to finding out what is on that list. I mean, probably something like a weapon, but I don't expect Harry to have much experience on a shooting range and even if he built a nuke, dropping it would kill *everyone* and not get Hermione back. I'm guessing at some medical stuff, to revive her with, but I am not sure whether he means to do that, or clone her, or turn back time so the whole thing never happened in the first place. The three would require different sets of equipment, like a surrogate or a ritual to send information back in time. It would make more sense to revive her body. He'll probably need the resurrection stone and the Philosopher's stone and whatnot to do it, but both of those are most likely still at Hogwarts.

Also, I hope you realise that you have to resolve the whole thing with Sirius/Peter/whoever is in there before you end the fic? I mean, you can't just leave something like that hanging. You can't.

And it's nice to see the Houses of Hogwarts reuniting instead of fighting for once. The Founders probably never intended them to be separated in the first place. They didn't even have to wait seven years for a full-on war with a battle, all it took was realising that someone was out to get them.
summerful21 chapter 98 . 9/1/2013
Well, it seems 6th and 7th-years will be in high demand.
They'll be constantly pestered by kids who want to go to the washroom.
Awesome chapter, I loved the feeling of winning and everyone coming together. Harry/Draco engineered a whole lot. I'm curious to see what's on the list, lol to Harry operating as a disembodied voice.
This is honestly the best thing I've ever read, and I know you're very busy, but please update soon.

Yeah. those.
Quirrelmort is just the sort of person who, if he decided to grant you a wish, would have little problem granting said wish in a way that kills you. this chapter looks like a BIG step towards Granting those wishes, and is highly reliant on hermione's death.

despite eliezer's claim that Quirrelmort does not represent unfreindly AI, he has a LOT in common with an unfreindly AI-and with the christmas wishes...a squish djinn. so...yeah.

Reader-anonymous-writer chapter 98 . 8/30/2013
Wow! I haven't expected to miss several chapters. I have been away for a long time, haven't I?
xyz It has been three hundred and twenty-three years since the country of magical Italy was ruined by one man's folly.
Interesting. How so?
xyz "Then will you give up this -" "No," Harry said without even thinking before he opened his mouth. After a moment, he added, "But I do understand what you're trying to tell me."
I shall walk the paths untouched yet,
I shall travel faster than a plane, a jet,
World more surprising than Concord
I shall not destroy with my discord.
Yet on my travels I will not give up,
I would rather be blind by a star's fire
Than close my eyes from vista such dire,
I shall not go stubbornly into deadly thorns
When there is reason to silence my horns,
But neither shall I sacrifice dreams not born
To fears unknown, unfounded, in pain torn.
xyz "No, the most likely difference is not that you care more. It is that, being a more logical creature than they, you alone have thought that playing the role of Friend would require this of you."
What's the difference between a person feeling something and a person pretending to feel it? For perfect model, there is no difference between the original and its model. It doesn't matter whether you pretend to be a friend or are really a friend; all that matters, is the question of you being a good-true friend or a bad friend.
xyz There was a strange, wild desperation in that voice. "Why be the only one in the world who goes to such lengths to keep up the pretense, when none of them will ever do the same for you?"
You have lost, already, long ago, this belief in preciousness of human's life,
You have resigned, far away to go, to detach yourself from humans' strife.
You see yourself, your past, your loss, your youth, in the youngster here,
You see the pain, the struggle, the future, and him you want the pain to hear,
You know that you will not help him, that the life not long will you thus bear,
You know that you need to warn him of the wounds that he shall thus tear.
xyz "I have done what I can, and now I fear I must take my leave of you. Good -" and the Defense Professor hesitated. "Good day, Mr. Potter."
Good bye. I hope you will meet again. I still don't understand your 'health problems'.
xyz "There is no magic which can undo death," Mr. Lupin said quietly. "There are some mysteries which wizardry cannot touch."
Sounds like "It's Necromancy, more dangerous than Dark Magic; do not speak of it, do not seek it, or you will be lost, and not heard of again"
xyz "Because it was already done, and over," Remus Lupin said gently. "Because wherever James and Lily are now, they would wish me to act for the sake of the living, not the dead."
But if there is afterlife, then there is possibility of communicating with the dead, of possibly resurrecting them.
xyz Deathly Hallows. Understood. "With all their lives, they tried, and they made progress but their research wasn't finished so they passed on the mission to their children, and their children's children."
Thank you.
xyz "I accept my family's quest. Death is my enemy, and I will defeat it." Thrayen beyn Peverlas soona ahnd thrih heera toal thissoom Dath bey yewoonen.
Thank you.
xyz Harry nodded. And then, having carefully saved this question for last, "Do you have any idea of what the words meant?"
Seek the old Latin, and older than that,
Seek what the words could have meant,
Even if spoken in dragon's own tongue,
Even if brought from Merlin's old times.
Magic of family, preserved through time,
Magic which with your mind can chime,
Magic of love, of fight, of uneven strife.
xyz "Do I need to explain further, son?" "Not particularly," Harry said. "We also have lawyers in Muggle Britain, and they'd think your lawyers are cute."
xyz "The third, you wouldn't believe me about. The fourth is a catch-all category called Everything Else." And the fifth, Lord Voldemort, I do not think I should name to you.
xyz There was a brief silence in the room, except for the two goblin guards who went on breathing regardless. "You are mad," Lucius Malfoy said coldly. "It's called justice, Lord Malfoy."
Beauty of simplicity.
xyz "So it fits. It all fits. The one who really committed the murder is - Albus Dumbledore!"
It fits too easily. Maybe, Alastor? I don't know. Who would have wanted to frame Albus? Who would have been able to persuade Albus so easily to gift a rock to Harry?
Too complicated. Too convoluted. Too many plots. Too many knots. Edges pointing in strange directions.
xyz "You exonerate House Malfoy of any involvement in Hermione Granger's death? Do you have any idea what you've done, you little fool? Why in Merlin's name would you do something like WHAT -"
Alastor, it was your plot that got Hermione killed, wasn't it? Or am I pointing fingers too quickly?
xyz "I'd like you to join a conspiracy," said the figure in the shining robes. "Everyone in Slytherin who can cast the Patronus Charm, and everyone who can learn."
Silvery Snakes. Serpents of Shadows. A-ha, Silver Slytherins.
xyz "And Hogwarts," spoke Daphne of Greengrass, feeling her blood burn like it never had before in her life, "is going to fight back."
Extremely interesting.
Good day, good night, and good luck. Thank you.
canonfan chapter 98 . 8/30/2013
Hey, I'm really confused. What pairings does this story have? Is it Harry/Ginny (I hope so). Or Harry/Hermione or what? (Yuck). Please let the readers know somehow.
paula5 chapter 98 . 8/30/2013
1) Great stuff. More!

2) You have a sleep disorder, just like Harry? Just as well, it's a very useful device for him. Where would the story be without it?

3) With houses Malfoy & Potter both declaring Hermiome's killer to be their enemy, it is going to be harder to redeem Quirrel. I'm half expecting Harry to do a run on the forbidden upper corridor with Quirrel, despite having a strong suspicion of who he is, with the deliberate intention of saving his life (and maybe Hermiome's too, somehow). It might even be a very strong suspicion. Harry is arrogant enough to think he can turn anyone. Oh, it's all going to go horribly, terribly wrong somehow.

4) Oh, no. I've just realized what a perfect victim LL is being set up to be. He would do ANYTHING for his dark lord, and he has recently been sent to Quirrel to get help learning self defense. And a certain person is going to need a new body very soon. The Horror! And Harry is going to protect and shelter his new hybrid friend, because of his love for Q and his obligation to L. We might even see a further descent into real darkness while Malfoy becomes the center of the story and the only real bright spot for the next hundred chapters.
Wasteomind chapter 98 . 8/30/2013
Great fiction, Eliezer! I'm so appreciated to you for what you have done with writing this great fiction and popularization of the rationality among the masses. And I must say, that if you will ever decide to write an original fiction - I assign an 99% confidence that it will be superpopular :) I wish you great luck with all your beginnings.
Best regards, Nikolay

PS: my thought about how last scene might look:
Beneath the moonlight glints a tiny fragment of silver, a fraction of a line...

(black robes, falling)

...blood spills out in litres, and someone screams a word.

BartHumphries chapter 98 . 8/30/2013
Someone said, "I at first thought that the actual Circle's work was being hijacked through imitation (likely because I remembered the intial reaction scene), but later forgot about the initial reaction scene and concluded the whole thing had been them. I also didn't imagine that the thorisson could have convincingly taken the place of 'him', despite the gestering of Fujita to speak instead; my wrong guess was that the cloaked figure was a dummy, everything handled from a short distance by Secano or 'him'."

Where in the world did that come from? Who's this Fujita and Secano? What's the Circle? What's the thorisson? Was that other person posting in the wrong forum or did I miss some really big things?

It's truly depressing how completely this fic has gone to shit. What started as a humorous parody turned into a pedantic self-promotional piece of propaganda, and now has turned something completely unrecognizable from what is started out as.
Regina lacrimarum chapter 98 . 8/29/2013
I have enjoyed this story so far, reading it straight through over the last three days. I just wanted to say that Hermione's death made me cry as none of the deaths in the actual books did. There was some criticism of that scene from other reviewers, but in my opinion it played very well. Really, I suppose we should have seen it coming. You can't have a man who wants to conquer death and *not* have somebody die before he learns how.
Besides, the greatest achievement of this story is that you cross lines. JKR, no matter how much she debated killing Ron, would never have done it, and I think we all knew Harry wasn't actually going to die. That's not how a story goes. You've removed that certainty, which is terrifying and amazing at once.
Thank you for the story,
Mith chapter 98 . 8/29/2013
Must agree, your selling t-shirts with the quotes is possibly not copyright-compliant. On the other hand, JKR might be open to discussion on publishing your book, why not, if you split the proceeds somehow.
Guest chapter 98 . 8/29/2013
This was a pretty dramatic chapter. Definitely blood-stirring ending. I can't wait to see what happens next.

Thanks for posting.

Well done!
WAT chapter 98 . 8/29/2013
Mad. Absolutely mad.

What the fuck is going on.

I swear, if you die before you finish this story I am going to invent time travel, duplicate your brain, bring it back to the future, install it into a droid, and force you to write out the entire thing after modifying your perception of time so it takes subjective years of writing for a single second to pass.
Multipartite chapter 98 . 8/29/2013
Saga of Soul certain reactions (spoilers present):

This has been quite enjoyable to read so far. It started out painful (in terms of writing awkwardness?), but feels as though it's gradually gotten better (much like a single webcomic's art often improves immensely over time). ((Ah, I should also mention the pleasantness of the Sailor Nothing, Madoka Magica, et cetera genre of which this is more or less a part.))

I was quite curious about what the 'less obvious plot' you mentioned was, so kept my eyes peeled throughout, but there were so many plot thread levels that I couldn't tell which one you were referring to until I reached the grand-reveal chapter. (I was starting to suspect that there was going to be a reveal about He Who Laughs being Kazu all along or similar... actually, I'm still suspecting that, albeit with relatively low probability.) Upon the reveal, I was happy to see that I had in fact noticed and been keeping track of it.

The presence of portals and disguise technology made the mysterious especially conveniently simple to analyse.

The biggest flag that sent alarm bells ringing, the 'I notice I am confused' moment, was when Secano was in the role of negotiator. What we'd seen of him psychologically (and in terms of experience) would suggest him as significantly ill-suited for the role, and if it wasn't him there would be absolutely no reason to use /his/ name (as compared to an unrelated fake name, say), and more than anything (given the portals/disguise aspect) there wasn't an blatently-given reason why his superior couldn't fill the role. Then, there was the 'in place' line when Secano was being exultant to the thorisson. With portals, what sort of position-what positions exist in the set of all relevant positions-could that be, for difficulty of insertion? What, given all that we see happening? (Especially if assuming that the superior couldn't take the place of Secano because he was /in the same place at the same time/.) The clincher was the parts about 'reporting directly to me', that /personal/ direct interference that was being taken, plus the 'I am confused' aspect of seemingly giving power to the goverment (actually in practice to /him/), given it being seemingly at odds with their goals. The wife conversation and similar was just further laying it on with a trowel. (There was also of course the earlier extreme convenience to Secano of all 'his' reactions/choices, particularly the oddly low level of suspiciousness... reminded a little of the scene in Independence Day where a certain person mind-melds with an alien and starts spewing convenient Deus Ex Machina information about how the aliens are incontrovertibly inherently evil and have to be destroyed no matter what.)

I at first thought that the actual Circle's work was being hijacked through imitation (likely because I remembered the intial reaction scene), but later forgot about the initial reaction scene and concluded the whole thing had been them. I also didn't imagine that the thorisson could have convincingly taken the place of 'him', despite the gestering of Fujita to speak instead; my wrong guess was that the cloaked figure was a dummy, everything handled from a short distance by Secano or 'him'.

It makes me smile (sympathetically?) that, probably, the only reason they're keeping the original alive is for when 'he' fakes his death as a martyr, heralding a more open 'alliance'. The perfect body double, down to the DNA.

Speaking of which, I sigh at Murder's late observer. Almost killed, got /just one chance/ to stay alive and get out, and he let it go. That was the time to say "I just escaped death, I've done all I could do and everything you asked, I've reached the limit of what I can do, it's time to rotate someone else in. Please give me and my family the reward now, or something else if that's not enough; I'm going back to them.". Or else, more morbidly "I just escaped death, and next time I think he's going to kill me. Please rotate someone else in, or if you won't, please promise me than even assuming he kills me you'll give my family the reward.". Because Steel is effectively a supervillian his family might have been doomed either way, but from his perspective... oh well. Actually, I was surprised she didn't have his family casually iped out to make sure that none of them could possibly later find out and take revenge (like the Yakuza families mentioned before). Quite curious about what she and her son will end up doing, ultimately... 'money' alone doesn't seem as though it would mean much any more to her, and to get a level of 'power' that would actually /mean/ something... hmm. Slightly disappointing if she's not planning a coup of some sort at some point.

The big mystery, of course, is the 'effect of magic' thing... and what conceivably could be an explanation for why an effective solution hasn't been devised /already/, assuming that there actually is a simple solution and that they're not all just going to die... in any case, the 'something from nothing' multiverse-origin matter implies that one way or another there's an escape from destruction. Ah, perhaps it's going to be another instance of Eriko's scientific background trumping the pre-industrial levels of the linked worlds.

Incidentally, I shall smile if the real Circle of Wisdom turns out to be Eriko's next (and best?) allies. All we've heard about them have been from their /enemies/, so... (Besides which, their few-months late entry into the whole thing smells like a build-up for a game-changing reveal. *wakuwaku*)

-Come to think of it, I notice that I don't have any conception of what the inherent difference bewteen the fairies and the Elysium is, except that the Elysium presumably can't sense emotions (which Eriko hasn't been explicitly told the fairies can do). Hrmm. Oh well.

Also curious about how the heck Aurora and He Who Laughs (and 'He Who Is', for that matter?) got so much darn power in the /first/ place... that is, since power-supplying doesn't work across universes, how they got so much power and /kept/ it... in any case, Eriko should probably try to copy them. Actually, why hasn't Aurora been able to duplicate whatever powered her up so much in order to catch up to He Who Laughs? Very curious about that whole thing...

The 'ritual' is also of significant curiosity, of course. Some hypotheses, but... hmm.
ladyowl chapter 98 . 8/29/2013
That was... disappointing, I suppose. Not in the sense that something I didn't want to happen came to happen, but it just wasn't as completely awe inspiring as your typical chapter. Congratulations on setting the bar very very high.

The Sinister Man chapter 98 . 8/29/2013
It is absolutely hilarious to me that in the midst of all this gathering darkness, you actually managed to work in an oblique reference to "Draco in leather pants." Bravo!
AlpacaOverlord chapter 98 . 8/28/2013
I love the way you set up the last two parts. Very dramatically done.
I'm also very happy that the "Roles" are finally over.

I wonder what the "Something" was that "Broke" before...

Interesting chapter.
The Nekomancer chapter 98 . 8/28/2013
In terms of Ayn Rand, there's a popular quote, which I've used myself, and will paraphrase for here:
"“There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old’s life: Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationalilty and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves wizards.“

Jiopaba chapter 98 . 8/28/2013
You have such a lovely schedule. It surely deserves applause. You make a commitment and then you keep to it, and noone ever has to think 'well when am I going to hear from the author of the story again? How's the next chapter coming?'

I like knowing the dates like that.

Holy SHIT!
Whoever killed Hermione just made a BIG Mist-...maybe that was no mistake and this is actually part of the asshats plan?...

Rjalker chapter 98 . 8/28/2013
Ho-ly Frak.

I-Never have I-

You know, there's a reason I love this story.

No one has ever done this before.

That sounds insane, because it's /common sense/ but this has never, ever, ever happened before.

I have witnesses who can testify that three times I threw my hands into the air with a triumphant shout.

You, sir, are fantastic.
Lunar-Chakra chapter 98 . 8/28/2013
I read this story at every update, but unfortunately I was separated from technology for several months. To come back to this story arc finishing is truly amazing. So many things happened that I expected as well as completely surprised me. And while this huge political game is coming to a close don't forget that this world is one of magic. One of the things that intrigued me so was the magic that young Harry potter was discovering. Is something like that on the horizon?
confusopoly chapter 98 . 8/28/2013

ToBornotToB-Rad chapter 98 . 8/28/2013
Excellent chapter! The ending gave me thrills (students being the ones giving the orders to the Professors? Let's see how that goes over) and I love how when Draco tried to quote Gandalf he got shot down before he could finish. Good job!

StrangePointOfView chapter 98 . 8/28/2013

I love it. Of course I expected that the story would become more epic after the dark turns it has taken recently. But this is still...

This has taken a turn for the epic.
Arkh Cthuul chapter 98 . 8/28/2013
Very very nice Ending for this Arc, although a little bit of more in depth description of the reactions of Dumbledore and other porfessors would have profited the overall feel, imo.
aldeka chapter 98 . 8/28/2013
Three Slytherins, two Hufflepuffs. Potter didn't stay up for the announcements, though we know he's involved, which would've added some Ravenclaw representation. Plus it's in response to a Ravenclaw's framing and death. But no Gryffindors. At all.

I guess they only wanted the students with Board of Governors seats as representatives of the vote. That makes some sense. And a Slytherin-Hufflepuff alliance is radical enough. But how will Padma, Parvati, Dean, Seamus, and so on feel about it? Will they feel frozen out, or will they quickly get included as well?

If you were a random Gryffindor, especially one not in the first year armies, this would totally feel like the Inquisitorial Squad from the books, even with the Hufflepuffs included. I hope they get a Weasley endorsement, or something, to keep from alienating that House.
Darth Parallax chapter 98 . 8/28/2013
I would like to take another stab at organizing the Plot into chunks and seeing what we can predict:

Well! For the FIRST time in this story, I KNOW what's happening next. :P
Not in Detail, but this is a GAUNTLET BEING THROWN, a Challenge Issued, if ever there was one.

Over the next two chapters, we are getting a Bunch of Chaos. Period. Voldemort WILL respond, in some way. We don't know what he'll do.

We do know what he's after. His motivations have been hidden for very long, but the whole Hermione subplot reveals: Professor Quirrelmort wants from Harry Potter what the Emperor wanted from Darth Vader.

First, to use him for trivial things, as a convenience. Then, after Harry's Threat Level becomes continually recalculated, Harry has to be used to take down Dumbledore and the Ministry.

The question is whether he will actually destroy the World before he Saves it or not? Or will he just Save it by cracking the Immortality problem?
Celestial Moonwalker chapter 98 . 8/28/2013
Woah! That's a war declaration, isn't it?

becuzitswrong chapter 98 . 8/28/2013
That was very interesting. It definitely felt different. And I am glad that Malfoy is back. Harry without the foil of someone more normal does not dazzle nearly as much. But I still miss Hermione. Malfoy was, is, friend, but also a project. Hermione was Harry's moral compass. Without her, the depths still beckon...
BlackRosary chapter 98 . 8/28/2013
I really really hope that Harry will eventually successfully resurrect Hermione. She was such a cool character that I'd hate for her to be relegated to Sacrificial Plot Device territory.

Even if she is dead for good though I think this story is the bee's knees and I can't wait to see how you wrap it all up. I'm going to be honest some of the science stuff goes right over my head but I still think it's great.

I want Harry to get the Deathly Hallows so badly now...
Math-lv chapter 98 . 8/28/2013
Awsome as always! Keep up the great work!
Shaz chapter 98 . 8/28/2013
The end, in my mind, was as epic and awesome as I'm sure the author intended - and then at some point I remembered these are eleven-year-olds lecturing and ordering about a room full of people who are older (if not in all cases wiser) and more powerful (magically speaking) than themselves, and it became incidentally HILARIOUS. Still, great chapter.
graynavarre chapter 98 . 8/28/2013

ChrisPhoenix, seriously? The recommendation of Atlas Shrugged was a joke. That's because Objectivism and Ayn Rand's books are widely regarded as jokes.
BarbaraKaterina chapter 98 . 8/28/2013
Oh, honestly! Why would you wish Ayn Rand on anyone? And on poor Fred and Goerge, of all people!

Oh, a revolution. Done in a rather conservative way. I like that. I think Daphne is fast becoming my favourite character - well, after Snape, probably.
badkidoh chapter 98 . 8/28/2013
another great chapter if a short one.

Goddamn goosebumps.
So how about you go into politics and and start working on a meritocracy?
I'm thinking you'll have tens of thousands of supporters off this fic alone :)
Zealot of Reading chapter 98 . 8/28/2013
Nice chapter, hope to see more updates soon!
ChrisPhoenix chapter 98 . 8/28/2013
From the author's introduction: "Not everything the protagonist does is a lesson in wisdom."

To this category, I must assign his recommendation of Atlas Shrugged. I say this as someone who really likes The Fountainhead, enough to read it multiple times and recommend it to people as an adult. But Atlas Shrugged is like a spoiled child smashing her toys because they don't do what she wants. (I did like it as a teenager, though.)

Harry Potter, in this story, has been psychologically and sociologically separated from almost everyone by his hyperintelligence for his entire life. He has not had the opportunity to learn firsthand about the emotional calculus that makes up so much of human interaction. So perhaps it is not as out of character as it seemed at first, for an extremely rational, intelligent, and competent person to recommend this book.

This is not to say that I disagree with Ayn Rand's central premise - that theft, especially institutionalized theft, especially of the fruits of a person's creativity, is a Very Bad Thing. (For what it's worth, I believe Sean Parker (the "Hobbit Wedding" guy) was robbed by the State, cheated by the corporation he rented the space from, and treated with shameful injustice by the media. I'm personally shocked and offended by the first and third of those; I expect corporations to try to cheat HHHH extract money by any means they can, though it's a shame they can violate basic fairness with such impunity.)

What I disagree with is that Atlas Shrugged presents this as the Most Important Truth, the Truth that should be the Overriding Concern of every Ideal Human. There are other concerns of at least equal importance - such as governmental promotion or destruction of rational thinking.

It seems to me that in Atlas Shrugged, Ayn Rand improperly, narrowly, presented rational thinking as equivalent to self-interest, and self-interest as equivalent to economic self-interest. I started to say that I can believe that a pre-teen socially isolated Harry Potter might have missed this point... but on reflection, I would expect him to see Atlas Shrugged for what it is: the one-dimensional fundamentalist outpouring of a deeply hurt (exiled) person. In any case, I think that he is not wise to recommend a book that so distorts the multidimensional richness and benefits of rational thinking.
KailSakray chapter 98 . 8/28/2013
thanks for the update
Elelith chapter 98 . 8/28/2013
Impressive. I can't wait to see where you take this. Somehow I don't think the enemy of Hogwarts expected this. Also: Can I buy a T-shirt if I'm not in the US?
SSC chapter 98 . 8/28/2013
Oh no! We have to wait a month!? Well, that means I'll just have to reread everything in the meanwhile ;-)

I don't know if you're familiar with TV Tropes, but this ending here? A Crowing Moment of Awesome. Definitely.

And I had to snigger at the part about Draco being turned into trousers. Draco In Leather Pants with a Twist!

(if you're not familiar with TV Tropes, don't go to that site before this fic is finished, because TV Tropes Will Eat Your Soul) ;-)
Zenoen of Astora chapter 98 . 8/27/2013

FraktalAMT chapter 98 . 8/27/2013
One word: EPIC.
Blazen chapter 98 . 8/27/2013
Good chapter!

On the other hand - you are making money of this fanfic. It is against the law. I don't think it is right, you should've written original fiction if you were going to benefit from it.
Klldarkness chapter 98 . 8/27/2013
That. Was. Awesome.

I have officially re-read this fan-fiction for the 5th time, as I wait for new chapters, and It's still my number 1 favorite fanfiction, out of the thousands I have read. I've reviewed, followed, and Favorited before, but after this chapter, I just had to review again.

I tell every Harry Potter Fan I know of about your fanfiction, to help them enter into this addiction. I have to say that the way you bring together humor, science, science fiction, references, and Harry Potter is nothing short of Amazing. If this is what you can do with a Fanfiction, I just can not imagine what type of world you would create with an original novel.

Please write an original novel, fiction, preferably. I just know that your fans would buy up every copy. The pre-orders would probably be enough, if you give a couple chapter teaser.

Anyway, thank you, for writing an amazing fanfiction, and continuing to bring us amazing, well written HPFF!

SexySnape99 chapter 98 . 8/27/2013
Beautiful. I feel like we're finally at the climax. Very good work.
irdgad chapter 98 . 8/27/2013
Dear God, the end bit sounds like one of the many cheesy superpowered and logical magical kid stories. What on earth was that for?
amadeus chapter 98 . 8/27/2013
The awesomeness. It's too much! TOO. MUCH. AWESOMENESS!11111

Ahem. I very much enjoyed this chapter... and every chapter before it. What amazes me, possibly more than anything else, is your ability to use the reader's (assumed) knowledge of canon to make this an even better story, despite a complete divergence from said canon.

I truly love the rationality lessons you've added throughout this story. If more people were capable of teaching so well through such amazing entertainment, we might have advanced much faster as a species. Or, you know, destroyed ourselves a long time ago. But that's beside the point. Please, I beg you to continue your writing far beyond this fan-fiction and teach/entertain the masses (and myself) more about the wonders of science and rationality. I have never enjoyed reading ANY book as much as I have enjoyed reading this, including the original Harry Potter series.

And now I've finished gushing. Well, mostly. For this chapter, anyway. Or at least this post. ...Maybe not. I think I may have squee'd a little bit. It's highly disconcerting, actually. Especially since I'm neither 12, nor a girl, and am highly averse to many of the things aforementioned stereotypical squee-ers are likely to squee about. Nevertheless. Chapterawesome. SQUEE.
DarkRavie chapter 98 . 8/27/2013
Great chapter! Kudos on doing excellent job writing this story. It keeps me entertained and wanting to read more. I look forward to reading what happens next.
Araytigre chapter 98 . 8/27/2013
Interesting development with this new Committee, I like these new decrees. Although I was surprised that Harry wasn't on it too, but I did notice that ALL of its members are Purebloods. It will be fun to see what you come up with next, and hopefully continuing this story line. I had been following JBean210's HP and the Methods of Chaos (32 chapters, Complete), which is a take off on this story (but with Hermione living, or at least was brought back to life). It was pretty good in a convoluted way. Thank You. TTFN

Oh, well played, children. Well played. Well played indeed. This shall be interesting. I look forward to the new arc. :)

Catalyst23 chapter 98 . 8/27/2013
I have been reading your increasingly massive novel for some time now, but have refrained from posting a review simply because I had nothing to say except 'Good Job!' or 'Bravo!'

This time, however, is different. The last paragraph before your second line break ("They both just shook their heads...") was quite possibly the best description of what it means to be good that I have ever read. Good job and Bravo!

Then I read the next line and laughed out loud. (Anything that makes me actually do that deserves more than a simple lol)

Aside from a few typographical errors, which are as to story telling as sarcasm is to satire, there is nothing that detracts from your writing. Your writing is superb.
Guest chapter 98 . 8/27/2013
Okay, Quirrell absolutely, most definitely arranged for the death of Hermione as a way to achieve his ends.
QueenDrakon chapter 98 . 8/27/2013
Squeeeeeee! This chapter is AWESOME! I love the speech, and Draco Malfoy is SO my favorite character in this. Harry is interesting to read, but I just LOVE Draco's character.
JohnLocke94 chapter 98 . 8/27/2013
Oh my. I see that things are getting, as they say, "real".
Looking forward to the next installment - thank you so much for your dedicated writing, again, although I haven't the slightest idea what your plans are. That is often the fun part in a story...
Darth Parallax chapter 98 . 8/27/2013
alright, so I think a declaration of war of this type JUST might be enough to provoke the Villain into the Open.

Also, I can tell that the first Chapter of the Last arc is going to be heavily centered around the Defense Professor.

With Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy, not to mention the Silver Snakes and the Bayesian Conspiracy AND the Chaos Legion all kind of coming together as "Potter's Army"...well...this is a Major Power Shift, and at this point anyone intending to attack a single Hogwarts student for any reason, is going to have to fight a War to do so.

The Sorceror's Stone is still at large. And Harry Potter still hasn't studied Horcruxes. I'm beginning to realize though, that any and all plot elements from any and all books are up for grabs at any and all times.

There might be a Deathday Party, there might be Hippogriffs, there might be a Hedge Maze or any number and kinds of Dragons.

Now, the odds are pretty low that EVERYTHING from the books will get a Rationalist retake on it, but considering I'd thought Book 5 was ''finished'', and now we have an Inquisitorial Squad and Educational Decrees...well. Oh and if you don't think "Potter's Army" and "Inquisitorial Squad" are both going to be the same thing...well. Um...they are.

I wonder if we will see Professor Umbridge replace Professor Quirrell?
Ganurath chapter 98 . 8/27/2013
Well, that was awesome. I am, however, skeptical of Harry's hypothesis that a person could benefit from reading Atlas Shrugged.

so its sorta sad but the very first thing I thought aobut during all of this would be...
why in the hell are the second year students? the ones telling this?
the hell?
Its just,, for the love of god do I pity Dumbledore in regards to what he has to deal with in the wizarding world.
oh yeah by book seven Dumbledore was supposedly 150 something right?
well... hes beena round all throught world war one, two and the cold war the entire time. and all the OTHER issues, so besides Voldemort and Grinwald what other smaller dark lords showed up to cause trouble?
and seriously why the HELL are children the ones reading these annocments? Ive loved what work you've gone into this and all but STILL theirs stuff.
so cant say much more than that.
anyway harry having a breack down and Fred and George being all nice and stuff you ve made some itnresting charecters in regards to everything.
still I feel distress over a lot of things in regards to some of it and where your going.
buy ehh. good luck, and I hope you get to where you want this to go, and I hope that selling stuff doesn't get you in trouble! have a nice day and all.
