The imagery is sharp when it's outright - when it's vague, it's depressing, in a good way, with slightly more surreal imagery...a bit like how The Passion of Jeanne d'Arc was shot. (If you don't know about it, it's on YouTube...)
Roderich's written well. His reaction, and how he suppresses it - it really seems to be how it would be like for him.
