|Reviews for Counting Coup|
| Zatnikatel chapter 2 . 6/14/2010
Great action, and love the *uncomplicatedness* [is that even a word?] of this. It has a real early-season feel… I don’t read that many early season stories any more [heck, I don’t get to reac much any more, period] and then only by a choice few writers [like your good self, and Phoebe and Amy Blair]. I do love later stories and as you know I love the mytharc but a really good, tightly written story like this does fill me with nostalgia. I just wish the standalone episodes in S5 had been this well conceived.
Whoah, Sam is uneasy. That doesn’t bode well…
Dean rolled his eyes. "Why do chicks get all flowery like that? Why couldn't she just write 'I miss the old bastard. Wish he was still around.'" I love that and love how Sam applies his smarts to figure out where the body might be. It’s sad too, though, because it does remind me that Sam had Jessica and must identify with that kind of love, that “gaping chasm” that can’t be filled. Oh, Sam.
“He knew there was a part of Dean that craved a normal life, part that, if things were different, would love to settle down. But, as long as hunting was part of the equation, his brother would keep that part of him buried deep inside.”
This, and I pause to just spit on the final scene of Swan Song. I just don’t believe that is what Dean really wants. Okay, rant over.
Oh noes! Dean is starting to feel sick. So I was thinking it was supernatural but now I’m thinking someone slipped a mickey in his food at the diner…
That’s a really sweet and sad moment when Dean lets slip about the aftermath of Sam leaving

Puke, *ew*. It’s lucky I have kids and have been puked on [and worse] regularly for the last decade.
Love this opening sequence, you really give a sense of the speed and urgency with which things are moving, and of Sam’s panic… I love his protectiveness too [protective!Sam really hits a kinkbutton for me], and how he’s so damned offended at the suggestion Dean might have taken something. Love how we’re really in the thick of it… I’m sensing there might be a “two days earlier” at some point too, to tell us how Dean got this way, which is very clever and very *episodic*!
Guh, sick boys…
LOL, I was right!
Points for mentioning Maine [I’m a Maineiac in Exile], and I like the backstory, lends real authenticity to the case they’re working. Also gave me a really clear picture in my mind of the big Capes that hug the coastline along #1A.

Great story! I really enjoyed the Wendall side of things. The ending was especially good with the counting coup thing. :-)
| Ciya chapter 3 . 6/12/2010
I'd love to see something like this on the show during the new season. Great story. :)
| zuimar chapter 3 . 6/11/2010
I just love the detailed way you write and the lengthy chapters. It's a missed chance, really, that the show didn't delve deeper into the Wandell story, so this story felt like a treat!
This scene was so funny to read:
Sam swallowed, limping stiffly to Dean's bedside. "You were poisoned." "Right." Dean snorted, waiting for the punchline. He frowned when none came. "Poisoned?" Sam nodded. "At the restaurant. Your food was spiked." Dean considered the information for a moment, then looked up at Sam. "It was the broccoli, wasn't it?" LOL!
Thank you for another awesome story!

Ooh yes. This was a very intriguing fic, and would've worked well as an episode on the show. As usual, brilliantly thought out, and flows nicely.
If I'm remembering correctly, the show was intending to follow this kind of thread (Sam hunted by Wandell's buddies) during season 3, but apparently the writers strike scuppered it.
Is that right?

This had terrific characterization, and I loved that you picked up the Wandell thread.
And Dean switching the pies? Unfortunately perfect.

cool story...just the boys caring for each other and being together...miss that...

I was completely enthralled! Great detail, the Sam and Dean voice was fantastic, and your Native American style intimidation is totally something I can see Dean doing. The equal opportunity hurt/comfort was also fantastic. A great read!

Great story! Sometimes I love me some human threat! Dean sure knows how to take care of his little brother. Thanks for the story!

Yikes! What is going on with Dean? He's more than a little confused here. Hopefully, the doctors will be able to figure it out. Is his illness supernatural or natural? Looking forward to finding out!

Well, I just totally enjoyed reading your story! Absolutely excellent work! Great twist with Eve. I also missed that they never mentioned that again on the show.
I don't think I have ever read a story with a poisoning and with someone going through a glass door. Very original! :-)
Thanks so so much for sharing this! Great way to pass the time while my husband watches some martial arts movie with his brother on a Saturday night :-)
| Menthol Pixie chapter 3 . 5/29/2010
It does indeed sound like something Dean would do. Great story - it certainly makes up for the show not following the idea. Thanks for sharing. :)
