I quite like this. There are only two things I want to point out to you:
1 you forgot about Little Bear. He was in the hole with them too
2 you forgot that the heartfire is underground. They would go UP to the infirmary and Sandry would have had a very hard time leaning out of a window.

Other than that great story. It really hit home.
(I just re-read the seires this week. I have about 50 pages of Briars Book left)

This is adorable. I would have liked a little more transition between the first part of them talking to Moonstream and them being at the site... Or they are there? I was confused. Just a little line placing us at the beginning would have been nice.

Other than that and one tiny typo (to instead of too), I really liked this. The characters were perfect and I think you got a very unique perspective here. Good job.

awww... :X wat a warm story..

A good look at just how frantic the teachers must have been, especially in comparison to Moonstream. Niko seemed a bit OOC with "And—goodness!" though. He's always felt more... quietly intense to me. The hug was nice :) The ending was very fitting, too.
