Only reason I can think of for the name change is the fact that in Japan 'l' and 'r' have/are the same letter(symbol?).

Cute little oneshot you have here. Very nicely written.
As for the name thing; if I remember correctly, the Japanese pronounce 'L' and 'R' in the same way. So in their pronounciation, Lua and Rua are the same name, even if it doesn't look that way to English speakers. Why they didn't settle on one spelling is anybody's guess though.
