I love when really good writers do canon. Sometimes canon is just what you need. This was very sad and touching, particularly Edward's inability to cry once he'd gotten past the point where he might care what anyone thought of a 17 year old man/boy doing that.
These lines really got me-"I wanted my mother. I was no longer ashamed of this, as I may have been a few days ago. I was seventeen and nearly a man, but I wanted my mother and I no longer cared if that was somehow childish or unmanly." and
"I had refused to cry when Father died just a few days ago. Now that I no longer cared how my tears would be perceived I wanted to cry for him, but I didn't have any tears. My sobs were dry, choking and pointless. They upset Mother, so I only cried when she was asleep." And this one is the hardest to take of all-"I wished I had cried for Father, but I was the man of the family then, and I had to be strong for her. Now I was just a boy without a family, unable to cry for them. When I was gone, there would be no one left to cry for me." Gah! Great job.

I love how you wrote this little story.. allowing Carlise to be considerate enough to not only allow Edward to say goodbye to his mother, but assissted him in touching her face one last time.. very touching.. thanks for the post.. loving your writing as always.. Pam B.

This was good. edward's feelings when his mom died brought tears to my eyes. The whole thing about not being a man or soldier, just a little boy alone, well, that really got to me. And his croaked out "mommy" Very sad but his love was very beautifully expressed.

Heartwrenching! How sad to think of his inability to actually produce tears to cry for his parents and all he'd lost. I really like that Carlisle gave Edward a minute to say goodbye to his mother. That's exactly in-line with his compassionate character. Wonderfully written.

Good! Always enjoy a little more canon Edward. Even if he's in pain. :)

Well...I think you did a good job with this, although it was kind of depressing...Having Edward's mom die in front of him, and having Edward so ravaged with the Spanish flu, only to be replaced by the burning of his change into a vampire by Carlisle's bite.
I liked it, tho'!

This was positively the most powerful and heart breaking telling of Edward's last moments before his transformation. I was surprised with how emotional this made me. I have never been able to stomach a grieving, hurting, or heart broken Edward. And this glorious rendition is a perfect reflection of what his agony can reduce me to.
I think this was perhaps some of your finest work. Please give serious consideration to exploring more canon EPOV moments.
You completely destroyed me with this. And I thank you for it.

I loved that Carlisle allowed him to have a moment to farewell his mother, that was heartbreaking. Nicely written.
