I learned about sociopaths when I was in college and I didn't realize that the term is no longer in use professionally. I was taught that sociopaths can blend in very well. They can be very charming and have lots of friends and such. But all their behavior is selfish, to get things from other people such as power, money, sex, attention. They use and exploit people and they believe that everyone else is doing the exact same thing. Based on this interpretation, I can see why Sherlock calls himself a sociopath. I don't think the lack of friends is a necessary or sufficient condition. I think it's the lack of emotional connection and belief in the concept of emotional connection. So before he met John, that was pretty much true- all his interactions had to do with needing/wanting something from the other person (stimulation, information) and the other person needing/wanting something from him (help with their problem or a moment of his attention in the case of Molly). Whereas John was totally different; he gave Sherlock his phone, his help. his trust, his admiration and didn't expect anything, and I think that started to open Sherlock's eyes.

I love you for dealing with this. xD I immediately wanted to look up the specific differences between a psychopath and sociopath after I watched the show, and was rather disappointed in my search. It was clever dialogue, in the episode, and a quick and snarky comeback to Anderson, but it doesn't sit well with me that Sherlock would use the terms wrong :( Out of everything in the three episodes it probably bugs me the most. xD
(at least, the idea of anybody using the terms wrong when they are talking about something they are supposed to have bugs me.)
I'm glad to see I'm not the only one that put thought into this. :) TY for posting.

nice turn on the terms. i always wondered what the difference between psychopath and sociopath may be because my dictionary said these were (outdated)synonyms

Great little story :) Thank you! You should probably consider a more appealing title so people will want to read it more.
