This was a great insight into the Matthew/Isobel relationship and how this conversation might have gone. Matthew's character was very believable and I think you captured his desire to do his part very well. I also liked how you emphasised that every decision he makes does not necessarily relate back to Mary and his feelings for her. :)

Very well done. I could see Matthew here: "He raised his eyes to her, sporting a fiercely determined expression."

And I could hear his mother here: "I do understand that, Matthew. And I think you've dealt with everything so admirably. But are you sure that this is the best course of action? Is there not another way?"

I really liked this. Matthew and Isobel's relationship is a great one to explore and you portrayed this poignant moment very convincingly. I really liked how true Matthew was to his episode 7 portrayal. It's a good point that his frustration isn't just related to Mary.

Aww! What I love about this story is it really is a microcosm of Matthew's character: pride, stubborness and the desire to do good. :) As a result, I find it so believable, but so very sad. I don't know why...there's a very "last resort" feel to it (the passage about "husbands and fathers" was just...sigh) What I like most about it is it feels like an attempt for Matthew to regain some control over his life, and I find that very true to character. :D Once again, I hope the show follows your lead, and addresses these issues as well as you have! :) Thanks so much for posting - keep writing! :D
