FanficHoarder chapter 13 . 11/21/2021
“I am NOT your father”—lmao this got my laughing XD

Lovely writing. Keep up the good work!
majere4 chapter 19 . 10/21/2021
"
"You didn't have to do this. To get me anything, I mean. I don't... well... I don't deserve it. I haven't made your life easy."

"I haven't made your life easy, either, Mr. Potter," Snape replied. He didn't mention the years of misconceptions and prejudice that he suddenly felt the need to make up for.

"No," Potter agreed. "I guess that means we're even."

Snape made a reluctant sound of agreement.
"
*squints and re-reads that part*
So... that's it? Yeah, no.
majere4 chapter 18 . 10/21/2021
"
"Indeed. And while I admit that I was... caught unaware... when you first arrived, I have accepted your mother's choice." Snape uncrossed his arms and reached out to straighten the coverlet that lay over the single bed. "In other words, Potter, this is now your... home... if you wish it, and as such, you are welcome to stay here any time that it is deemed safe for you to do so."
"
It's the way you word his dialogue that has me intrigued. You reveal an intellect that is both enjoyable to read and gives the mind something to process and consider.
I've never doubted that Snape was an intelligent man.
It's what damns him in my eyes: no man that intelligent could ignore all of the data he had on Harry and conclude anything short of an abused, neglected child. There were zero data that pointed to a pampered prince. Then there was the simple fact of his not growing up with his father, so snivellus mindlessly visiting the sins of the father upon Harry was maliciously infantile and willfully ignorant. Not to mention completely unprofessional and uncontrolled - both qualities he purportedly prides himself on. Where is his intelligence in all of this? Why, it is purposefully, hatefully, knowingly focused on the degradation of a child. He is, in short, still a death eater in his heart of hearts.

Setting aside those foundations for my discontent is made all the more difficult when the only real piece of evidence you have removed from Snapes' perception is Harry's clothing, which he raided from the lost and found... for the whole year? Some mismatched but acceptable quality clothing could not hide the way Harry flinched at loud noises, the way those robes hung off of a gaunt frame and a face taut against his skull due to malnourishment. The dozens of other clues that an abused child could see another abuse victim if he were not willfully ignoring them in favor of his own hatred-based perceptions.

In any case, the mind rapes are what elevate snivellus above hem-hem or any other HP villain who specifically targets Harry. Not only are they a vicious, malicious assault, not only do they provide Tom even easier access to Harry's battered mind, but worst of all, snivellus saw Harry's miserable childhood in detail and chose to ignore it in favor of his own twisted mind's pre-established narrative. He chose to believe the absolute worst fabrications based on hearsay (Quirrel, the Chamber, etc...) and conflicting evidence and ignored the absolute worst reality when it was proven beyond a shadow of a doubt.

I'm not saying I cannot see Snape elevated to human status, but your fic thus far has not dealt with one iota of his previous behavior. Harry trusting Snape at this point is a bit too much of a stretch and essentially asks him to completely absolve snivellus with nothing more than a few meals, some clothing, new glasses, and vague hope. Snape has not made any overture of remorse for his willful maliciousness and that leads me to wonder how easily this character could fall into the worst-case assumptions - and their attendant vitriolic responses. Without genuine remorse (which he understands as he expects it from the dursleys as part of his curse) how can we believe that Snape has indeed changed from snivellus?

Excellent chapter.
"
"While I have no doubt that Mr. and Mrs. Weasley are more than willing to take you in, Potter, the Weasley childrens' penchant for rule breaking predisposes me to find them an unsuitable arrangement at present."
"
I don't like Snape, but you are making strides to establish him as a... not as disturbingly malicious... ok, neutrally surmise that he's not going to eviscerate Harry for breathing too loud...
*hums in thought*
Ok, he's showing a side of himself that we are expected to be hopeful to believe is both stable and enduring. Best I can do.
majere4 chapter 16 . 10/20/2021
"
Struck by a thought, Harry asked, "Did you ever reconcile with my father?"
"
Harry really isn't all that bright, is he? Good thing he can fly and has Hermione to help with school, or I doubt he'd have a future outside Quidditch, let alone pass exams. Seriously, I know you needed to advance the plot with angst there, but that was extraordinarily moronic, even by Harry's blundering blunt style... it was almost Ronald-level stupid!
majere4 chapter 15 . 10/20/2021
Ooof, you're going to go into some deep emotional binging... aren't you?
majere4 chapter 14 . 10/20/2021
Best scene thus far. Some really deep scars and a lesson too late learned now imparted with unlikely hope.
majere4 chapter 13 . 10/20/2021
Nice details, genuine progress now that they've turned the corner... of course, Harry still has no idea that there even IS a corner...
majere4 chapter 12 . 10/20/2021
"
He wondered for the hundredth time what on early Lily had been thinking to name him of all people guardian of her son.
"
I wonder what it would have been like had dark lord dumbles not broken a dozen laws to imprison Harry? Well, Sirius would have been guardian first. Then the Longbottoms, but moving that aside, would a younger Severus Snape have been able to see the eyes before the hair?
majere4 chapter 11 . 10/20/2021
I really want to piss on snivellus... to put out the fiendfyre. From a long distance, of course.
majere4 chapter 10 . 10/20/2021
180-degree turn... GO! I get where you're trying to go with this, I just wish you'd given us any reason whatsoever to believe Severus Snape was a human being before seven chapters into the story. Psychotic break notwithstanding, the backstory these two have doesn't allow for Snape not to have seen Harry's life when he was mind-raping him. It also doesn't excuse what Snape did to him for five years, as though he was somehow justified in abusing and belittling any student, let alone Lily's son.
That he's not going to make even the slightest twinge of apology for that reeks of manipulation and continued delusion. Harry simply has no reason not to believe that Snape will revert to snivellus without the slightest warning or provocation. Knowing that the nastiest person Harry knows was a childhood friend of his mother actually makes it worse - Harry now knows that even despite being friends with his mother, he still treated her son like his most reviled enemy...
majere4 chapter 9 . 10/20/2021
So... Snape is batshitecrazy? Multi-personality disorder? An (apparently new) personality, one with a soul and conscience, that has never uttered a word to Snape in Harry's company or to his benefit before this day? Huh.

"
He also knew that if there was ever a chance of Potter trusting him, he'd have to address some misjudgements and dispel some misconceptions, and soon.
"
erm... misjudgements? misconceptions? snivellus has saved Harry's life once that we know of, and that was only due to a life debt owed to his father.
Name ONE other thing that death eater has done to Harry that did not involve hatred, vitriol, or at the very least, disdainful insults? You can't, it didn't happen.
Snape HATES Harry Potter, Openly, Intensely, Gleefully! Whatever "mis" there is, it is not in judgement or conception, those are obvious and factual. Whatever mental breakdown Snape's having, it doesn't change history.
majere4 chapter 7 . 10/20/2021
You're doing a good job of bringing some revelations, albeit as agonizingly slowly as possible.

Giving Snape even the slightest twinge that he gave a shite - ie, that he's not canon snivellus - before chapter 4 would have reduced my earlier disgust at my number one most hated person in canon.
majere4 chapter 2 . 10/20/2021
"
"And what reason would they have to treat you like this?"
"
OK, so we're going with Snape is incompetent at Legillimancy and never saw a single moment of Harry's first 10 years at durzkaban, nor the previous three summers. meh

I know that Snape is supposed to be intelligent, but how can he honestly reconcile everything he has seen - including via his mind-rapes - and the evidence of Harry's appearance, and still hold to his psychotic predetermination of what Harry's life was supposedly like and who Harry is?
I get that you are going for some kind of mentor relationship, but if you are starting with canon Snape, I just cannot see how he will change when he has maintained a willful ignorance bordering on mental illness, discarding reality and loathing Harry with every fiber of his being?
majere4 chapter 1 . 10/20/2021
Well, that's a bit mind-blowing!

I assume this is a bit AU, for instance, snivellus knows exactly what Harry's life was like at the dursleys. His hatred of the boy isn't going to go away for any reason as he knows that Harry's life was as bad as his own childhood, not the pampered prince bullshite snivellus spouts.

That said, it's Lily's Will, so maybe snivellus will be transformed into a human being through some ancient ritual when he reads it? :D
