Reviews for The Last Human

Lord above, this is very well made! Well done! You are a very good writer, I have to say so myself! You are, and you were! God bless you.

Nice story, you're a good writer. Although I will say, I feel like most people read fanfic for a sense of satisfaction that we didn't get from the main story. And I certainly was left feeling uneasy about things like PB's ending, Marcy not really wanting to be human, or the main villain being pretty much snatched up by his ear and carted away by the Cosmic Owl. But despite this, the story certainly does feel complete, and in general its well written, with twists and turns that really make me feel. Good stuff.

I love this. Good job Ruby

The only reason I can think of that PB would be mad is cos Finn was like a security blanket for her. She really has no right to be irritated that he’s moved on, unless his feelings for her were an ego boost and little else.

“I realize I don’t want to feel her warmth or smell her sugary sweet hair”

Yup, that’s the end of that romance. He’s here for the cold skin and, uh… What does Marceline’s hair smell like?

PB isn’t totally wrong. But… ouch.

I've been reading this story going for 5 years, and it never fails to entertain me. In fact, this time around this story made me cry tears of joy, it's so good! This, my friend, is the pinnacle of what a good Finnceline story should be. You make the relationship between Finn and Marceline feel very genuine, with plenty of ups and downs that make sense with their characters while also nailing their relationships with their supporting characters as well. And the fact that you made a version of "Adventure Time" that is exceedingly darker while still keeping some of the more lighthearted humor without it being forced is a work of utter brilliance, especially how you handled Finn in that exact manor, making him more brooding but still being the fun-loving goober we know and love. Although I'm a little bit mixed with Marceline becoming a human at the end (especially how it relates to the theme of the story. More on that later), on its own I think it's an utterly beautiful moment that makes Marceline come more to life (no pun intended) for me as we see her struggle with both the fears and joys of her new mortality and how she has to learn to adapt to it alongside Finn. If I'm being honest, this one of the few Finnceline stories I wish was canon, in someway, if only because it focuses on the fact that Finn and Marceline share human ancestry (a fact which seems woefully downplayed in the main canon) and thus would naturally form some kind of bond.

Sadly, I do have two major problems with this story, both of which I think keep it from being the best it can be; the payoff for Bubblegum and the theme of "never being truly alone." It feels like, despite all she's sacrificed, Bubblegum just kind of gets the short end of the stick in this love rectangle and receives very little in return. I think Finn and Marceline needed to do a little more for Bubblegum to show their appreciation for getting them together or, barring that, have Finn return the sweater that she gave him as a reminder that he still cares about her. And the theme of Finn never being truly alone because all the people of Ooo care about him, despite being the last human, while an utterly beautiful message, also runs a little hollow when you decide to to turn Marceline into a human, greatly implying that Finn's not alone anymore not because he's surrounded by his nonhuman friends but because he turned his girlfriend into a human, both ruining the message and Finn getting exactly what he wants in the end. I think for that message to really hit home, Marcy needed to stay as a vampire, but Finn still feeling happy that he got his girlfriend back. Bottom line is, I think the story is too held back by the fact that Finnceline is it's primary focus when that should honestly be the secondary focus, with the primary focus being largely on Finn's coming to terms with being the last human and embracing all of his nonhuman friends as his true family.

With all that said, I think this story is utterly fantastic and serves as a gold standard for how Finnceline stories (and fanfics in general) should be written and I'm so happy this story is still up. When I finish my own Finnceline story, I will be sure to credit you as an inspiration. Thanks so much, again, for writing this great story! ;)

This was an incredible read. I am usually hesitant to start any story that doesn't have more than 100,000 words, mainly because I rarely find stories capable of giving a sense of completion with such a small amount of space. This story, I'm happy to say, is one of the exceptions.

The introduction of the issues (Finn's loneliness, Ice Prince, Vampire King) worked surprisingly well. I didn't really expect to be as invested as I was with so little information as to the state of the world. The early growth of Finn/Marceline's relationship was really well paced, which again surprised me due to the short nature of the story. And for the final conflict, I thought it was pretty well done. I am not a huge fan of the whole "love interest dies, hero brings them back to life," but yet again, I was pleasantly surprised with how okay I was with your handling of it.

The only gripe that I had with the story was just the first person nature of it, as I feel that form of storytelling places some inherent restraints on the storytelling (in this case, the fact that it is really difficult for the story to progress unless Finn is present).

I have to say, though, the date at which this is written astounds me. You managed to create a shockingly good adventure with such a small amount of source material, and some of the ways you filled in the blanks (like with the Vampire King backstory) were exceptionally clever and well-written. It was really fun to draw parallels between your story and the now completed television series. It's difficult to wrap my head around the fact that this was written over 8 years ago, it's just that good.

With all of that being said, thank you for writing this story! I had a great deal of fun reading it.
