I agree, it’s not bashing Kakashi. Kakashi is genuinely wrong, but I think you’ve got a more detailed version of canon Kakashi.

I hope this split personality we’re seeing of Naruto won’t be a full psychosis or focused on mental illness as seen in some other stories. No one else in Naruto shoes would be so happy-go-lucky. Most would become like Gaara or 86 themselves, that’s just realism given how bad Narutos life is. I like the realistic take for the story so far.

Maybe I’m forgetting this, but AI can’t remember Naruto in canon ever describing his love of orange, I’ve only seen this in fanfics. I don’t really get it. I do get he realistically bought those outfits because it was all he could get from the village people, another failing of Hiruzen Sarutobi.

I do like the serious note that he wanted to protect himself and those he cared for, not the village. Considering Naruto situation, this is actually sensible. It wasn’t realistic in the show he was loyal to a village that treated him the way they did until after Pein really.

He’s even denied his checks? Is Hiruzen doing anything for this kid? ️

Hmm. Malnourished? Canon Naruto eats so much ramen... most fics explain him being shorter because of vitamin deficiency malnourishment from JUST having ramen as so few people sell to him. Still, I think this is the first fic I’ve seen mention it as like he’s starving. Because of his high metabolism and lack of money? Thinking about it is confusing because if it’s that bad, how is he alive?
This does poke a hole in believability for the story I have to say. You can’t improve the human body if your so malnourished you can see bones as described, going days without eating. He’d drop where he stood the moment he started if he trained as described in chapter 1 with days without eating. The Kyuubi and his constitution as an uzumaki only does so much for him, would not negate this simple fact. No food no strength training even being a possibility, and attempting it besides risking death would drop kick him into unconsciousness. To your comment at the end, his training wouldn’t let him keep what little muscle he has, his body would be eating his muscle as food if he’s literally starving as you’ve described so far.

I do like that you directly say Kakashis being late to make them come together as a team... Canon Kakashi clearly needs a bonk on the head. Not everyone’s a genius who can learn things thinking through on their own, most people need to be actually taught and led to the conclusions he’s trying to get them to in their own. If he simply told them to start working together that would actually start making progress, let alone if he made them engage in actual team exercises. You’d think after months of being late as he was in canon before the chuunin exams he would’ve noticed his strategy was Not working and wonder if he should stop trying to make them see underneath the underneath and actually communicate with them like a human being. So I am glad to see you actually had Kakashi work on this with the team exercise Though the fact that he still isn’t having them learn to fight together or otherwise improving his students... I dunno if this is before Zabuza, but it’s like he didn’t consider they need to improve their skills or they’ll actually be in danger ️

Hope we learn more of the backstory with Takeshi

Kinda wished to see a story avoid the back and forth switches in language for phrasing. It’s a small thing, but I don’t always know what they mean and have to guess by context.

Otherwise, I think this deserves high praise as an intro for nature fanfic in general, and especially for this pairing. It’s preferable having them start off as friends compared to the fic last prayers kinda violent introduction to their relationship for example.
