|Reviews for Where Do We Go When We Die?|
| xxXMythiaXxx chapter 1 . 10/25/2015
(I'd log in, but I'm getting issues w/ ff right now.)
I read this story on AO3, and I'm rendered speechless. The entire story was breathtaking, beautiful, and presented to me a rainbow of emotions. I felt what each character felt, I shook in my bed reading each chapter, and almost cried at the end. It was amazing.
I don't usually do this, but I want to break off into some points of some sort so that I can organize my thoughts:
These characters were very different from what I know - at least, this goes for most of them. Stein, Mari, Patty, BlackStar, Tsubaki, and maybe Lord Death don't seem to have changed too much, as far as I can tell. But Kid is so caring and kind, Liz isn't so... Liz, Chrona has definitely changed somewhat to me (especially with that faith and bravery that touched my heart, he/she's my favorite character in the anime and here!), Spirit does act like anime-Spirit sometimes, but he's a lot more serious here, and Soul - God, Soul - he was so different. From the first chapter, I almost couldn't go on. For most of the story, he was broken and confused. I cannot describe in words how much I look back at his character in the beginning and think of everything that's shaped who he became in the end, nearly bringing me to tears.
As for Maka, I'm not sure. She and Soul, from early chapters, seemed inseparable. I was saddened when Soul and Maka did separate for a period of time, but there are important plot points during that time that I really enjoyed reading.
Overall, all of the characters felt important to me. Heck, Medusa, Jacqueline, and Kim were here, like wow. Hats off to you!
What I do want to say before I move on is that you repeatedly mention the same adjectives and description for each character that make me feel like they symbolize something. The main characters and chains, like Kami, Maka, and Yuca, Wes and Soul, and Chrona and Medusa all show a form of brokenness, jealousy, and/or something they lack and are willing to go through drastic measures to get it. That's what I love about this story - how they all seemed like broken pieces put together. I mean, Kami, Yuca, and Wes... lol. (I'm so sad about Kami though ;_; Not everyone can live, I guess. I probably would've killed her off too if I was the writer.) Oh, and about Chrona being the "hero" - I SO CALLED IT.
The plot. Is. Amazing. My brain is whirring just thinking about it. This story has made my heart lurch, ache, sympathize, die, resurrect, quicken, stop, and repeat. It has swept me off my feet.
Though, I won't say that it's perfect. I want to be completely honest here: there were some things that felt like a quick explanation (e.g. Stein and Mari's existence in the hospital past the climax, Lord Death and Spirit in the hospital too) when it could've been a scene. Some parts made me go, "Huh?" and I had to reread a paragraph more than once because I didn't understand what you were trying to say. I even noticed some typos, but every writer has those. Yours were down to a really good minimum.
I'd say more, but I'll just say that 65 chapters. Whew. I read it in a month, I think, since I had school (if I had no school, I would've read this in a week or less). So much character development, which is something I like to focus at to help me with my own novels. The character descriptions were just perfect in my eyes - I can't find a better word for it atm. And describing the scenery is tough for me, and I think you did well on that.
I personally love your style. It really gives me good imagery, like I can imagine Maka's house and Ragnarok's and such. I'll admit, I find long paragraphs tedious, and I tend to skim over those. Also, haha... I pretty much skimmed the entire first and second chapter. I just wanted to see if I'd like the content, and I REGRET NOTHING. Reading this story was SO worth it.
You use a lot of similes and metaphors. Your writing is just sprinkled with idioms and such that I would sometimes add to a Word document so that I can use those in my own writing. I'm always reading to improve and be inspired to write. Right now, I'd say you're one of my biggest inspirations. I know I can't achieve your wonderful, well-earned work in a day, but I'm willing to take baby steps.
Let me take a moment to talk about the dialogue and actions. They were the ones that really controlled how I felt. I suppose that's normal, but like, I usually am straight-faced or laughing my retarded head off when I'm reading. I've only cried once reading something (if you're curious, it's a one-shot from the Kuroko no Basket fandom called "Burning Brightly" by pale rose fire), but this fanfic gave me a rainbow of emotions I could hardly handle. I couldn't breathe at some fast-paced moments that made you feel the rush of excitement or like when you're balancing on a tightrope.
So now I just want to thank you for sharing this fanfic. It truly is one of the best ones I've ever read. I'm inspired to get up and write now, thanks to you. :) ~9.5/10
I'll definitely check out your other fanfics sometime!
P.S. I think you can reupload your chapters! Just remove the sexual scenes and make a note there that the full chapter's on AO3. I think that'll be alright.
