My theory is that some bitch pretended to be nice to Edward during senior year so he would ask her to Prom. He did, she said yes... but when he arrived to pick her up (tux, flowers, limo), she shot him down-probably saying something like, "I already have a date! Why would I go to Prom with Edweird Cullen?"

There's enough of an age gap between BE that she could have been only a freshman, or maybe the middle school was grades 7, 8, 9 and high school grades 10-12, being housed in separate schools.
