56 isn't that old. He could easily do government work still at that age.
| Twiggy288 chapter 1 . 12/19/2012
I love this! It is amazing and gave me the inspiration and ideas I need. I'd be super intersted to see an epilogue on sherlock reading that letter-I'm really curious about it!

If you'd like an honest review here's one:
I think this is an amazingly, touching, very sensitively written story. I loved...and nearly gave it a miss for one thing and one thing only. It's the same reason why I think most of your mature readers in this fandom will choose to give it a miss too, and that's such a shame:
It's a songfic.
Songfics scream "juvenile". Most readers in a fandom like Sherlock will avoid them like the plague. The ONLY reason I could read this fic is by making it into a document and redacting the song lyrics out of it. What I was left with was a beautiful, mature story that flowed so nicely. I was totally focused on the John and Sherlock's plight - not on a song that, while I do like the song VERY much, I don't as a reader, want to be interrupted by something that has NO REAL connection to the story you are crafting!
You may reject what I'm saying. You may even be pissed too, but I'll DARE you - join the BBC Sherlock LJ community and to the Watson's Woes LJ com, retitle your story and post it WITHOUT the song (except at the end if you just gotta have it). Sit back and see what kind of thoughtful, heartfelt feedback you get over there. That's what this story deserves, because that's the standard of writing quality it has.

| None0000000 chapter 1 . 12/2/2011
Well, I very rarely cry over written pieces, but you managed to jerk some tears, and that is no small feat. I think it was the realism of everything. The fact nothing here was romanticised meant a lot, as I have had people in my life pass from cancer. You also write such wonderful older versions of Sherlock and John. They're still the same characters, but with depth and age behind them.
I just have one critique for you — cut the song lyrics. While a song is great for inspiration and the lyrics can motivate the writing, they break up the flow and pace of this story. It would also come off as a far more mature piece without them. I know it's hard to cut things, but as one of my writing professors taught me, "You have to kill your darlings."
Overall, fantastic, touching piece. I honestly really loved it.
