Reviews for Tango Up On Sunset
mmadjane chapter 2 . 1/30/2009
I know you wrote this like a thousand years ago, but it's new to me since I have recently started liking Sunset Boulevard, both the movie and the musical. My favorite Norma, other than Gloria Swanson (obvs!) is Betty Buckley. :) It's so cool that you sent your fic to the actors!

At any rate, I love how this was written. The reoccurring dream/memory of the New Year's party, Joe's constant inability to make up his mind, and Max's protective devotion really stand out. And poor Norma. I like this ending a lot too because it's bittersweet. Eventually she'll realize that her movie will never be made, but at least Joe will be there to pick up the pieces.

Thanks for writing this!

Sorry for the late (and LONG) review :D

Thank you so much for your story... you know, I re-read it every day since last week, that's because I can't stop listening to the musical and I can't help crying in the end - and then I go and read your story to stop crying :)

You've manage to create a totally believable picture, it corresponds with the air of the original musical and really completes it. Thanks for such a great job.

I know I sound totally emotional but hell, it's your fault:) Yours and ALW's.

PS. If you can, please, post some more stories about Joe and Norma 0:-)
EverTheDreamer chapter 2 . 10/27/2008
I really liked this a lot! It was cute and romantic and I just really just.. Adored it. I loved that Joe, like, RAN back to Norma. And Norma, in all her delusional grandeur, was just amazing. And I felt that everyone was really in character. As I said, Norma's delusions, Joe's flip-flopping emotions, and Max's constant supportiveness of Norma and every one of her delusions.

I, of course, was hoping for more Norma, but I still really liked it!

Thanks so much for sharing!

xoxo, lyss

Hm... normally I despise happy endings substituted for tragic ones. But this was so well written I had to read till the end. You had some very clever ideas there. So, overall, I like it.
Nellie Putnam chapter 2 . 1/3/2007
MY GOD! If you ever venture into writing something for publication, you'll have to let me know! Yes, a little convaluted, slightly blah in some places, but you have big lush spots, and a good understanding of characters. Scratch good, make that PRECISE. There isn't much Sunset Boulevard fic up here, I think there needs to be, especally if it's as good as this. You have set the standars, dear!

Happy New Year and great stuff!
Sir Drake's Heir chapter 1 . 10/29/2006
Okay, here I am, reviewing again, because last time I was to busy gushing that there were other SB fans (Boulevardians, as I call them) to actually leave a straight review. So, here goes.

I loved the way you wrote Max. It was perfect, down to the little "I trust there are no charges against Ms. Desmond now?" because of the implied "And even if there are any, I'm just going to kill you and dump your body in the ocean rather than have you force reality on her."

And the description of the "Yes, Madame." God, I love Max!

Ahem.

On Joe:

It was sweet that he had a crush on her when he was little. (Weel, not THAT little, but still) and I can totally see Joe staring at a picture of Norma kind of like the girl in "Audition" stares at the phone...

Ahem.

And I loved the you were picking up on the whole sardonicism (if that wasn't a word before, it is now!) of his charecter.

Although I doubt it was smart of him to move back in with the lady that shot him.

And Norma was of course, brilliant.

But I do disagree that the ending is happier. I think that, in the end of Sunset BLVD, Norma is happy. She thinks she's filming a movie, and she's in heaven. Max is happy she's happy, and Joe obviously dosen't really care that he died.

But in your version, she has to learn that she's not filming eventually. And that will make everyone all sad. She'll probably kill herself.

But I love it anyway. :)

Please write more Sunset BLVD FanFiction, there are only three on the web!

And I'd write them, but my computer's down. :(

(Darn you, computer! GAH!)
Sir Drake's Heir chapter 2 . 10/26/2006
"Max was a perfectionist, for starters, just like Norma, and secondly, he'd noticed it before Joe had."

Of course he would have. He loves her, after all.

I also love the whole You-break-her-heart-and-I-will-kill-you-because-I-am-just-so-cool-like-that thing he had going on at the end.

But unfortunately, I now appear to be THE ONLY die-hard Max/Norma shipper IN THE WORLD!

And I'm also the only one who thinks that they built the house together and so the organ he plays all the time is his organ. Although, perhaps you've never heard that theory before, so maybe you'll agree, I don't know.

But it's cool cuz now I get to make uo the Hollywood couple name.

And lucky old you get to witness the christening.

Okay, here goes...

Normax!

Becasue it has both of their names in full.

And it is so cool that Faith Brown read your fanfic, although Glenn Close IS Norma, as far as I'm concerened.

No wait.

That's Gloria Swanson.

But Glenn's musical Norma.

And now for the end of the inordinately long review.

THE END!
nowdefunct chapter 2 . 12/3/2005
Lovely. I was so hoping to find some Norma/Joe fic (AUs, in particular), and really, I couldn't imagine anything better for them than this. It's hopeful, but still maintains that air of *insanity* that makes it such a wonderful 'ship, especially in this line: "Because, up on Sunset Boulevard, reality didn't matter any moreā€¦"

I'm so very glad I found this - there doesn't seem to be much SB fic (much less N/J) anywhere else, and it would be so very sad for it *not* to be ficced.
Girl-fascinated-by-voices chapter 2 . 4/24/2003
*stares in awe* gorgeous...just gorgeous. I love how easy it is to visualize each scene. However, being the nitpicker that I am, I have to tell you that your Author's note is wrong. The original POTO was first previewed in January of 1925. It didn't get very good reviews so additional footage was shot and it was previewed again in April of 1925. After a bit more tweaking and rearranging, it was officially released September 6, 1925. *steps down from soapbox* Sorry, I had to do that, the little historical innaccuracy was driving me crazy.
kpsd chapter 2 . 2/22/2003
Great fic!If only the story could have ended something like that.I love Joe and Norma.
Eva chapter 1 . 1/14/2003
"Joe, dear, close your mouth. Anyone would think you were trying to catch flies."...

Oh my God, that's a really good fanfic! I love how you write Norma... so realistic, so psychotic at the same time... and Joe...wonderful... the way he thinks, the way his mind works...excellent story... do you have more? :):):)

Musetta chapter 2 . 12/27/2002
Great story...God I love Sunset Boulevard! You did a great job getting Joe and Norma's characters across...it felt like I was reading their minds! Write more SB fics! Please!
Midasgirl chapter 2 . 8/29/2002
Aww! How cute! Well, myself being a Max/Norma and Joe/Betty shipper, I think it's doubly impressive that I still like this :) Wonderful! I loved the Max/Joe scene "Do you love her?" Awww! *stifles a sob* How adorable? I love it! We need a sequel! :)
Phantom of the Basement chapter 2 . 8/23/2002
Hey, congratulations on writing the first-ever Sb fic! Wonderful job, too. I've never actually seen the show, but I've heard the original cast recording before and seene the original movie. The frist time I heard the music, I was captivated, and when Norma killed Joe at the end, I just sat there in shock. Thank you for not killing him! Wonderful portrayl of Norma, Joe, and Max. By the way: I loved the part with the guys carrying the stretcher; "unused to apparently dead bodies suddenly leaping to life, and they exchanged nervous glances". Very good descriptions with that part! Also, the "murder- *your* murder" part was great. You should write another SB fic. :)
