Reviews for Against the Moon
Guest chapter 72 . 9/24/2018
I knew before I began this story that my love for Remus Lupin will be put to test. So his friends' approval is more important to him than his teacher's privacy? That's just sily. Ok, I had a teacher who was like Meyrigg and I never had friends like James, Sirius and Peter, so I suppose my priorities are different. I bet that man is either her husband or her brother and he's ill. Poor lady, they should leave her alone. Of course if they do, we will never learn her secret. And Remus's conscience is far too quiet on this up, the little voice. I liked Remus's interaction with Davey. He wanted forgiveness, but instead he got a chance to realize no serious harm was done, which is even better. And I can't stand the way Sirius treats Peter. I can't believe this continued throughout their school years, especially given the fact that Peter knows they don't respect him.
Guest chapter 71 . 9/24/2018
I really enjoyed that conversation between Remus and professor Meyrigg. 'his grader remarked'...It was very kind of her to thank him for that. And I knew it was Sirius she was trying to punish! But Remus should take her advice. I'll be so disappointed in him if he doesn't after she's been so kind to 'll be gone by the end of the year, then I shall cry. I also liked Remus's realizations about Peter. But it continues to worry me that Sirius is always the first one to visit Remus after transformation. Moreover, Remus reflects that Sirius wasn't annoyed by his company whereas James would be, and I can't agree with this characterization. I think if we need to have just two members of the group together, it should be either Remus and Peter or James and Sirius. I know it's your choice how you characterize the relationships in this group, but I'd like to point out that Remus and Sirius are very different. I'm not saying Sirius wouldn't want to spend time with Remus, I only think it would often be the case that they wouldn't have as much fun together as Sirius and James do. I liked when in one of your previous chapters you wrote that Sirius obviously tried to come up with the activity that would be within Remus's limits. I only think that a part of what makes this group so interesting is that they function best when they are all together, and as far as Remus is concerned, the best partner for him would be Peter since they both want to belong and Remus is willing to be helpful and patient. You show that James and Sirius enjoy each other's company, but whenever Remus is unwell, it's Sirius who rushes in to help him. For example, there was no need for him to interrupt his conversation with the teacher, the scene seemed somewhat out of place. I loved that scene with the injured boy. It never occured to me Remus might feel guilty about it, but now I believe it's true since he remembers that incident after many years. I still don't understand why Sirius is so caring when it comes to Remus. He doesn't seem bothered by what happened to Davey. But Remus's concern was very fitting.
Guest chapter 70 . 9/24/2018
Remus the teacher is always my favourite part of any Remus-centric story. I squealled in delight when I learned what kind of detention they got. At first I thought those students whose exams Remus graded were the lucky ones, it's a good thing Remus added comments to Sirius's pile as well. Meyrigg is amazing, and Sirius is insufferable. I don't know how she managed to keep her composure. I was surprised that Remus didn't realize that it was wrong to invade someone's privacy. I mean, he thinks no one was injured and so on, and only when the teacher mentions it does he realize what a terrible thing they did. I know you most probably wanted to use this to show that this taught Remus that shouting isn't the best way to make someone feel guilty, but I do thinkk Remus simply has a very mild, pleasant and calm personality, and he doesn't feel the need to shout. Sirius says he made them feel guilty sometimes and I don't think he achieved this by shouting. In my opinion it would have been better to show that Remus inherited this from his mother, since she is the calm one. So a scene where she shows she is disappointed in him rather than angry would have done the trick. That is, if you wanted to show that he had to learn this somewhere. However, as I've said, this isn't necessary since it's part of his character to remain calm, therefore shouting would have been out of the question anyway. I'm saying this because it seems unlikely that Remus didn't realize what they did wrong, I think he would be quick to realize this, given his own personal secret. And I think he would be astonished, rather than glad, that Sirius wanted to break into Meyrigg's office again. Now it sounds as though he is rather pleased and this, given the fact she made him feel guilty about it a couple of hours ago, is just strange. I do wonder what comment he wrote to that student who only got three answers right, though. I really liked that you included the mention of the comment he was most proud of.
Guest chapter 69 . 9/24/2018
I do have to admit that at first I thought you were going to write that Remus has a scar on his face. This fanon idea drives me up the wall. That Christmas scene was beautiful. However, if the one last year seemed just perfect, there was something off with this one. There's nothing wrong with making biscuits but just like that scene with Sirius telling Remus he wouldn't mind if he was bitten, this scene seemed a bit, well, too much. I could imagine Remus drawing something and then charming it or doing something similar. Sirius's gift was brilliant and I'm going to repeat myself, but madam Pomfrey is a wonder. I'm not sure Sirius would be so open about his feelings towards his parents, though. Notice he never admits to Harry that he loved his brother, though he most probably did, instead it's made clear Sirius is very bitter as he says his parents constantly reminded him that Regulus was a better son. Sirius who shows his anger by using snide comments maybe would seem more in character. Theconversation they had seems a bit too mature for teenagers. I can imagine Remus thinking about such things, since he was forced to mature early, though I'm not sure he'd express his thoughts for fear of making Sirius feel uncomfortabble. Btw, are they going to return that lock or whatever it was that they took from their da da teacher's office? They should hurry up
Guest chapter 68 . 9/24/2018
Well, 'do be reasonable' pretty much sums up my thoughts. This is their most serious prank thus far. I wonder how Remus will negotiate it with his conscience.
Guest chapter 67 . 9/24/2018
I generally find your Remus to be in character. However, this time I have a hard time imagining him showing the shrieking shack to someone. In PoA he has a haunted look when he is back at the house, which means that even after many years he still doesn't want to remember nights he spent there. My point is, it would take a lot of convincing to make him show this house to anyone. But if we assume it happens, I don't think Sirius would get this exceptional privilege. This is part of the problem I see with this relationship. Sirius is always the one to care for Remus, and now he's the one to whom Remus shows the shack. I imagine that either they all would go to see the house or none of them would. I also don't think Remus would have a desire to visit the place to give a tour for someone. This just seems so out of character for him. I also think Sirius's statement he wouldn't care if Rremus bit him was too much for me. I'm sure it's clear I'm against wolfstar, and not because of homosexuality, but because these two people have had problems which, in my opinion, would make it impossible for them to have a healthy relationship. First, there's that prank on Snape, which I bet even Remus thought was cruel and mean. Also, Sirius thought Remus was the spy for Voldemort, and this doesn't sound like something a lover would think about his partner. My point is, this chapter seems like a set up for a romantic relationship. We are in a dangerous territory. Furthermore, I don't think Remus would agree to let Sirius go with him down to the willow before moon rise. Remus resigned in PoA when he forgot to take his potion and put students in danger, I think a teenage Remus is no different. Yes, there were those nights he ran around with others, but they were there in their animal forms, not as humans, and they were supposed to keep him from hurting anyone. And he still felt guilty afterward. This chapter disappointed me a little because there are so many wolfstar stories and I was so glad to have found one that isn't, but Sirius's and Remus's actions here strongly remind me of the stories that have this paring. In fact, I have a suspicion that yours is the only one marauder story from Remus's point of view where Sirius and Remus aren't a couple.
Guest chapter 66 . 9/24/2018
Oh he's staying...I so wished he would have chosen to go home. I missed his mother, too. I also keep thinking that Sirius will become a mother-hen again and this kind of behaviour still seems so odd to me. I mean, he doesn't seem to care he offended Peter but he always notices when Remus is upset, this doesn't make sense to me. When a person is inconsiderate, he is always inconsiderate, so I don't understand why Remus seems to be a special case when it comes to Sirius's ability for compassion and even his ability to notice things. I still don't see why James doesn't seem to be the one who would also adopt the role of a care taker, given that he grew up in a loving family and at least has a pretty good idea what caring for someone entails. And I still think there's too much physical contact between Sirius and Remus. They are boys and teenagers, these two things combined usually mean that they would not be particularly comfortable with providing physical contact as a sign of comfort. I do love that Remus keeps correcting Sirius's grammar. Very few authors actually pay attention to the way he speaks, so finding someone who does is a blessing.
Guest chapter 65 . 9/24/2018
I think Remus is worrying too much, though I don't blame him. He seems to take every mistake to heart, but why on Earth should he think he needs forgiveness? I've never read a fic where Remus's transformation would be affected even the smallest emotional stress so this idea is interesting. I'm not sure McGonagall would go for help during a Quidditch match instead of trying to slow the fall of that player. There are a lot of teachers watching the game so I don't think that players have to take care of their teammates' safety.
Guest chapter 64 . 9/23/2018
I loved Remus's realization that Snape tricked him. It seems disapproval still affects him.I've said all along, though, that Remus and Snape were alike and since Remus wasn't as arrogant as Harry, who didn't want to be friends with Neville, this relationship might have ended differently. I wasn't at all surprised that Remus was willing to trust Snape. He seems willing to get along with everyone. So much for trusting people.
Guest chapter 63 . 9/23/2018
I have to tell you that I have to write my review in parts because otherwise I might forget something, and there are usually a few things I enjoy in every chapter.
First, the paragraph describing students in other years was great. Harry never seemed to notice much of anything, he didn't even know the names of students from his own years! Besides, it not only gave us a chance to know how the students behave, but it also reflects Remus's personality since it is my firm belief he is very observant. Well, he has to be, what with looking for signs of rejection or trying to find out whether he said the right thing. He wouldn't be such a good teacher if he wasn't so quick to notice things. I really enjoyed that part.
Also, I loved that he was reluctant to interrupt his friends' activities. That's another his character trait which very few authors mention. I'm very hard to please and I have to say that I'm very happy to have found a story that has Remus Lupin behaving as Remus Lupin and not some person of the author's own creation that happens to have Remus's name.

However, Sirius's desire to help Remus seems a bit strange. I don't understand why he's so desperate while James, though worried, doesn't seem so adomant. I'm also not sure that Remus would admit he was happy to have friends, unless he was more open about his feelings as a child. I've never read a fic where the relationship between Remus and Snape is discussed. It's nice to see Remus would have wanted to get along with him. I'm also surprised Remus no longer feels excluded when his friends leave him. I suppose it has to do with the fact they know his secret. I suspect that his feelings would be different if,say, they planned to do something on the night of the full moon and he simply could not join them.
Guest chapter 62 . 9/23/2018
Lovely as always. I especially loved Remus's worries that this might not end well. That part where he's trying to gage Sirius's reaction was especially great, it's so Remus like to do that. Oh and Remus made a gentle joke. And since I always find an expression I like, I can't resist mentioning it as well. This time it was a personification, that poor dead suspicion. You put those expressions in very appropriate places, so they sound funny and fitting. You are one of the few writers whose use of language means is memorable. And James does know Sirius, which partly diminishes my worries about this whole Sirius Remus business, and that's great.I especially loved that they all could contribute to the prank, it's the sort of group work I always look forward to.
Guest chapter 61 . 9/23/2018
'fret over', 'clean up after', 'prepare for'. All I can say is that I love prepositional verbs. I don't know how I feel about this approach to the werewolf problem, namely, that they make Remus go through those books. It sounds horrific. I understand the questions are necessary, but making him read about dark creatures...I'm not sure I'd have included that part. They could pretend they are interested in dark creatures and ask Meyrigg something about them. My main issue is that if they make Remus help them, he'll feel responsible if something goes wrong. I can't imagine him agreeing to help them with those transformations. I had no idea Sirius was so naive, though. But it partly sounds like ignorance or inexperience. I mean, you portray him as very smart, so it seems a bit weird he doesn't understand why Remus can't transform outside *shudder*. I realize now what bothers me so about the relationship between Remus and Sirius. It seems that they have a very close relationship, but the problem is that James is Sirius's best friend, Sirius himself admits as much in OOTP. It's one of the reasons why I don't believe all this 'Remus and Sirius were a couple' theory. If there is a chance of a romantic interest in that group, Sirius and James are most probable candidates. My point is, I'm not sure I see the proof that James and Sirius were best friends. You already established that they think alike, that they are both pranksters. What worries me is the fact that Sirius seems to trust Remus with his emotional secrets even though emotional support is a part of being someone's best friend. I'm not saying it's impossible that Remus could understand Sirius, but it seems strange to me that Sirius should be affraid to tell James his secrets.
I love the idea of Sirius as the evil twin and James's response to this. I'm not sure why you included the line where the prefect asks Peter who he is and Peter responds that James is his friend. It seemed a bit out of place to me. I loved that bit about Remus having interesting dreams after having opium rubbed on his nostrills. Other treatments were also interesting. I don't know where you got the information about werewolves, but it was really horrifying. I'm glad to see Remus as the one who defuses the situation. This role is very fitting. I also enjoyed how you showed that Remus's temper is more on the surface before and after the transformation and how he begins to realize this. I also liked that he's becoming more relaxed around them, though I personlly think it would take him a bit more time to start teasing other boys.
Guest chapter 60 . 9/22/2018
That scene where Sirius is singing is a treasure. I might have to find that song. I liked the dualing scene. And of course madam Pomfrey is always fantastic,' able bodied young trouble makers' indeed. I again think Sirius wouldn't be so impertinent when talking to her. But it would be in character for her to ignore the rule breaking. I do wonder whether we'll see Snape being accepted by the Slytherins. It seems he isn't all that happy at present. I loved the detail about Remus and the shoe-laces. It would be just like him to worry he had spoiled someone's things since he's so careful with his own belongings. I love your attention to details in general. And Peter got a chance to shine. They are really a group now, those second year boys from the third dormitory.
Guest chapter 59 . 9/22/2018
My favourite things:
Tamper-resistant wax. That part was priceless.'No reason you should have. I've just made it up.' *giggles*
phalanx of werewolf reference books. I loved that expression. Now I'm imagining an army of books attacking Remus.
James apparently gets the point pretty quickly. Well, but he's been learning from Remus, the expert on secrets and excuses.
I loved that Remus lectured them about what they should and shouldn't say. It sounded as though a detective were training his asistants. I only hope that when they find a way to help him, they won't march up to him and say,'hey, we've decided to become animagi'. It would take all the fun out of Remus's angsty life, where there's always a secret or two to figure out.
And that teacher...I want to hug her. I suspect you're implying that Remus also offered help to his students when he was teaching (at least I hope you're implying this because I always believed he was too reserved to do that until I read a couple of fics that showed him as a very helpful teacher willing to listen to his students' problems). Btw, what is she up to when she disappears? She said she can't be bothered to take the register, but she noticed Remus was gone on Monday. I had a fleeting thought she might be a werewolf as well, but this makes no sense since she's gone on weekends, unless she's a werewolf only on weekends and a weekend is a trigger instead of a full moon.
I absolutely loved Peter in this chapter. I only don't know how I'll survive the fact he can draw since it's ingraned in my mind that Remus is the one who is an artist *sigh*.But I'll live. It was brilliant Peter could contribute. I think Remus is quite fond of mischief, though it's a part of his character I can't fully accept or understand. Though I'm still sorry he has that need to prove himself to them. I actually felt so relieved while reading this hchapter, it seems that around 60 chapters of angst can be difficult to get through.
Guest chapter 58 . 9/22/2018
I'm very glad you expanded on Sirius's motivation to help Remus. Of course it would be much nicer if he did that out of understanding and desire to help, but it's true defiance had a lot to do with his acceptance of Remus's condition. I wouldn't be surprised if he thought, more than once, about what his dear mother would say if she knew he was friends with a werewolf. This made me think that perhaps a real understanding is only possible between people who share similar experiences. I mean, someone who experienced rejection wouldn't see Remus as a isn't stupid, but I don't know how much good knowing the truth does to him. Ignorance is bliss sometimes. But I love that you included this explanation since it's in character for Remus to know the real reason and still cling to that friendship *sigh*. I liked that scene with Peter, I guess it's even better to have a real friendship. But Remus...he wanted to apologize? I don't know whether it's madness or low self-esteem that's making him even consider such things. I understand Peter's fears a little better now. But I want to nominate Remus Lupin for 's gratitude was wonderful. He came to his senses at last. I'd love to know what finally convinced him, because his behaviour in previous chapters was terrible. I do love the expressions use use in your story, they are lucky to have their 'resident proof reader'. I was a bit amused by Remus's worries that because of him Peter had to choose between his friends and his principles. Sometimes I'm not sure he even has those principles, or rather, that they are very important to him.
