Reviews for Against the Moon
Guest chapter 65 . 9/24/2018
I think Remus is worrying too much, though I don't blame him. He seems to take every mistake to heart, but why on Earth should he think he needs forgiveness? I've never read a fic where Remus's transformation would be affected even the smallest emotional stress so this idea is interesting. I'm not sure McGonagall would go for help during a Quidditch match instead of trying to slow the fall of that player. There are a lot of teachers watching the game so I don't think that players have to take care of their teammates' safety.
Guest chapter 64 . 9/23/2018
I loved Remus's realization that Snape tricked him. It seems disapproval still affects him.I've said all along, though, that Remus and Snape were alike and since Remus wasn't as arrogant as Harry, who didn't want to be friends with Neville, this relationship might have ended differently. I wasn't at all surprised that Remus was willing to trust Snape. He seems willing to get along with everyone. So much for trusting people.
Guest chapter 63 . 9/23/2018
I have to tell you that I have to write my review in parts because otherwise I might forget something, and there are usually a few things I enjoy in every chapter.
First, the paragraph describing students in other years was great. Harry never seemed to notice much of anything, he didn't even know the names of students from his own years! Besides, it not only gave us a chance to know how the students behave, but it also reflects Remus's personality since it is my firm belief he is very observant. Well, he has to be, what with looking for signs of rejection or trying to find out whether he said the right thing. He wouldn't be such a good teacher if he wasn't so quick to notice things. I really enjoyed that part.
Also, I loved that he was reluctant to interrupt his friends' activities. That's another his character trait which very few authors mention. I'm very hard to please and I have to say that I'm very happy to have found a story that has Remus Lupin behaving as Remus Lupin and not some person of the author's own creation that happens to have Remus's name.

However, Sirius's desire to help Remus seems a bit strange. I don't understand why he's so desperate while James, though worried, doesn't seem so adomant. I'm also not sure that Remus would admit he was happy to have friends, unless he was more open about his feelings as a child. I've never read a fic where the relationship between Remus and Snape is discussed. It's nice to see Remus would have wanted to get along with him. I'm also surprised Remus no longer feels excluded when his friends leave him. I suppose it has to do with the fact they know his secret. I suspect that his feelings would be different if,say, they planned to do something on the night of the full moon and he simply could not join them.
Guest chapter 62 . 9/23/2018
Lovely as always. I especially loved Remus's worries that this might not end well. That part where he's trying to gage Sirius's reaction was especially great, it's so Remus like to do that. Oh and Remus made a gentle joke. And since I always find an expression I like, I can't resist mentioning it as well. This time it was a personification, that poor dead suspicion. You put those expressions in very appropriate places, so they sound funny and fitting. You are one of the few writers whose use of language means is memorable. And James does know Sirius, which partly diminishes my worries about this whole Sirius Remus business, and that's great.I especially loved that they all could contribute to the prank, it's the sort of group work I always look forward to.
Guest chapter 61 . 9/23/2018
'fret over', 'clean up after', 'prepare for'. All I can say is that I love prepositional verbs. I don't know how I feel about this approach to the werewolf problem, namely, that they make Remus go through those books. It sounds horrific. I understand the questions are necessary, but making him read about dark creatures...I'm not sure I'd have included that part. They could pretend they are interested in dark creatures and ask Meyrigg something about them. My main issue is that if they make Remus help them, he'll feel responsible if something goes wrong. I can't imagine him agreeing to help them with those transformations. I had no idea Sirius was so naive, though. But it partly sounds like ignorance or inexperience. I mean, you portray him as very smart, so it seems a bit weird he doesn't understand why Remus can't transform outside *shudder*. I realize now what bothers me so about the relationship between Remus and Sirius. It seems that they have a very close relationship, but the problem is that James is Sirius's best friend, Sirius himself admits as much in OOTP. It's one of the reasons why I don't believe all this 'Remus and Sirius were a couple' theory. If there is a chance of a romantic interest in that group, Sirius and James are most probable candidates. My point is, I'm not sure I see the proof that James and Sirius were best friends. You already established that they think alike, that they are both pranksters. What worries me is the fact that Sirius seems to trust Remus with his emotional secrets even though emotional support is a part of being someone's best friend. I'm not saying it's impossible that Remus could understand Sirius, but it seems strange to me that Sirius should be affraid to tell James his secrets.
I love the idea of Sirius as the evil twin and James's response to this. I'm not sure why you included the line where the prefect asks Peter who he is and Peter responds that James is his friend. It seemed a bit out of place to me. I loved that bit about Remus having interesting dreams after having opium rubbed on his nostrills. Other treatments were also interesting. I don't know where you got the information about werewolves, but it was really horrifying. I'm glad to see Remus as the one who defuses the situation. This role is very fitting. I also enjoyed how you showed that Remus's temper is more on the surface before and after the transformation and how he begins to realize this. I also liked that he's becoming more relaxed around them, though I personlly think it would take him a bit more time to start teasing other boys.
Guest chapter 60 . 9/22/2018
That scene where Sirius is singing is a treasure. I might have to find that song. I liked the dualing scene. And of course madam Pomfrey is always fantastic,' able bodied young trouble makers' indeed. I again think Sirius wouldn't be so impertinent when talking to her. But it would be in character for her to ignore the rule breaking. I do wonder whether we'll see Snape being accepted by the Slytherins. It seems he isn't all that happy at present. I loved the detail about Remus and the shoe-laces. It would be just like him to worry he had spoiled someone's things since he's so careful with his own belongings. I love your attention to details in general. And Peter got a chance to shine. They are really a group now, those second year boys from the third dormitory.
Guest chapter 59 . 9/22/2018
My favourite things:
Tamper-resistant wax. That part was priceless.'No reason you should have. I've just made it up.' *giggles*
phalanx of werewolf reference books. I loved that expression. Now I'm imagining an army of books attacking Remus.
James apparently gets the point pretty quickly. Well, but he's been learning from Remus, the expert on secrets and excuses.
I loved that Remus lectured them about what they should and shouldn't say. It sounded as though a detective were training his asistants. I only hope that when they find a way to help him, they won't march up to him and say,'hey, we've decided to become animagi'. It would take all the fun out of Remus's angsty life, where there's always a secret or two to figure out.
And that teacher...I want to hug her. I suspect you're implying that Remus also offered help to his students when he was teaching (at least I hope you're implying this because I always believed he was too reserved to do that until I read a couple of fics that showed him as a very helpful teacher willing to listen to his students' problems). Btw, what is she up to when she disappears? She said she can't be bothered to take the register, but she noticed Remus was gone on Monday. I had a fleeting thought she might be a werewolf as well, but this makes no sense since she's gone on weekends, unless she's a werewolf only on weekends and a weekend is a trigger instead of a full moon.
I absolutely loved Peter in this chapter. I only don't know how I'll survive the fact he can draw since it's ingraned in my mind that Remus is the one who is an artist *sigh*.But I'll live. It was brilliant Peter could contribute. I think Remus is quite fond of mischief, though it's a part of his character I can't fully accept or understand. Though I'm still sorry he has that need to prove himself to them. I actually felt so relieved while reading this hchapter, it seems that around 60 chapters of angst can be difficult to get through.
Guest chapter 58 . 9/22/2018
I'm very glad you expanded on Sirius's motivation to help Remus. Of course it would be much nicer if he did that out of understanding and desire to help, but it's true defiance had a lot to do with his acceptance of Remus's condition. I wouldn't be surprised if he thought, more than once, about what his dear mother would say if she knew he was friends with a werewolf. This made me think that perhaps a real understanding is only possible between people who share similar experiences. I mean, someone who experienced rejection wouldn't see Remus as a isn't stupid, but I don't know how much good knowing the truth does to him. Ignorance is bliss sometimes. But I love that you included this explanation since it's in character for Remus to know the real reason and still cling to that friendship *sigh*. I liked that scene with Peter, I guess it's even better to have a real friendship. But Remus...he wanted to apologize? I don't know whether it's madness or low self-esteem that's making him even consider such things. I understand Peter's fears a little better now. But I want to nominate Remus Lupin for 's gratitude was wonderful. He came to his senses at last. I'd love to know what finally convinced him, because his behaviour in previous chapters was terrible. I do love the expressions use use in your story, they are lucky to have their 'resident proof reader'. I was a bit amused by Remus's worries that because of him Peter had to choose between his friends and his principles. Sometimes I'm not sure he even has those principles, or rather, that they are very important to him.
Guest chapter 57 . 9/22/2018
I do have to admit I still feel the undertone of something more than friendship between Remus and Sirius. Maybe it's only my imagination, or maybe I see it because I don't want it to be there since I never understood where people got this weird idea. I'd like to say that Sirius touching Remus hand in the hospital wing seemed unnecessary. Teenagers aren't exactly fond of such things. Moreover, as someone who has trouble giving hugs or avoids physical contact for fear of being rejected, I think Sirius would also do the same, given his relationship with his parents. Notice that in OOTP he gives Harry a quick, one-armed hug, which suggests he isn't the type to provide physical closeness. The same can be said about Remus, who wanted to grip Harry's shoulder in PoA, but refrained and this suggests, at least to me, that Remus isn't used to such it's true about most men (I have only one male cousin who gives hugs when we meet). It would have seemed more realistic if they hadn't known what to say, then asked whether he needed anything. In my experience men are the ones who find such situations difficult. Sirius is very considerate in this chapter but I can't reconcile this behaviour with the way he behaved in Snape's worst memory-he was the one who said he wished it was a full moon. Thus I hope to see what brought this change in his behaviour. I'm not saying it's impossible, it just seems a bit strange. I also don't think Sirius would acuse madam Pomfrey of letting Remus starve, and that they would discuss this in front of her. Also, I think the Hogwarts staff respects Dumbledore so madam Pomfrey is unlikely to share her observations about Dumbledore with her patients. I still don't get Peter at all. I just don't see the problem and the situation seems somewhat too dramatic. Peter sounds as though he had been betrayed by Remus and I don't see how that could be seems to me that you put too much emphasis on Peter's interest in food. For all his faults, Peter must have a personality of his own. People aren't born evil, cowardice isn't something inborn. If Peter is a coward, there must be a reason for it. Lack of safety? disfunctional family? I'm only saying this because many writers make the mistake of portraying him as stupid, hoepeless boy whose only character trait is his obsession with James Potter. I also don't think madam Pomfrey can give house points. But let's say she does. Then my only concern is her words to Peter that he would be able to boast about it at breakfast. You portray her as a very tactful and considerate person, therefore these words seem to contradict her previous behaviour.
Guest chapter 56 . 9/22/2018
Alright. I think it's the right time to kill Peter. What I don't understand is how his prejudice became so strong. He isn't a pure blood and he knew Remus before learning his secret, that has to count for something. But he is just, well, evil. I could understand fear, but all this 'you are stealing them away from me' business is disgusting. I suspect he's jealous because he knows they prefer Remus to him, but no one asks him to stay with them and he had known all along that they preferred Remus. All in all, I find Peter's behaviour very strange. As I've said, he seems like someone who would pretend to be friends with a werewolf rather than lose the protection of James and Sirius. Besides, Peter must have made Remus suspect Sirius as a traitor, and given the present situation I have no idea how Remus could have believed this. I mean, how would he have believed Peter was the innocent one if he couldn't even be a real friend to him. If there's no trust, there's no reason for mistrust to develop. If this continues, even James and Sirius are bound to suspect something's wrong. I do enjoy this story, though now I realize why you were asked whether Sirius and Remus were going to become a couple and again I have to say I'm glad this isn't going to happen since it would undermine the importance of their friendship, but it seems that you are treding on that thin line.I wonder whether they'll tell Remus they are going to become animagi. I sincerely hope they aren't because Remus would feel responsible for them and also because keeping this a secret in order to surprise him seems more 's a bit frustrating that Sirius is the one who understands everything and comes up with all those sugestions to help and so on. The popoe is visiting my country just now, but this story made me think that I'd be more honoured to meet someone like Remus than the Pope. Peter is a nasty coward who doesn't deserve such a friend.
I have to say you are very creative when it comes to the use of language, I really liked the image of misery as a stony beach.
Guest chapter 55 . 9/21/2018
I'm beginning to think it's not healthy to spend a lot of time in Remus's head. I wanted to shake him when I read that conversation with James. Remus's thoughts there were spot on, but I can't stand that he thinks he gets more consideration than he deserves. I hope Peter will have his moments of glory in the future. I actually don't think he was so absolutely hopeless at everything. He did manage to make that potion for axis, you say, and now I'm curious how much Remus knows about maths. Wizards don't seem to pay much atention to it and his mother wasn't very good at it, so I do wonder about his knowledge in this area. I also hope James will be just as willing to help Remus as Sirius is because now it seems that there are Remus and Sirius and James and Sirius, but not Remus and James.
Guest chapter 54 . 9/21/2018
First, the scene with Snape and Lily was great. It's true he might have hexed someone to fit in since we see he isn't exactly the most popular kid at school. I love, love, love that part with Remus and homework. It was my favourite scene in this chapter. Oh and do I sympathize with James and his circular arguments! I write like that when I'm desperate and feel exquisitely stupid afterward. JK didn't put in things like that, but I'm glad you do. I thought Peter would ask Remus' help. But this also made me wonder about his morals, I mean, he should know how unfair it is to ask Remus' to help him but still refuse to be his friend. I'd love to hex him just now. The line,'owls of his calibre don't play Quidditch' is one of those I'd love to put on my T-shirt because it's the sort of thing that no one besides me would understand. For some reason I wasn't surprised that Remus felt lonely despite having friends, it's as though I've always known this was true. I feel that helpless anger I usually do when reading fics that have Remus and Sirius in them. I do want to stomp my feet like a little child at the injustice of it all!
Guest chapter 53 . 9/21/2018
Peter was a coward. We all know that he was. JK made them a really complex group because while I can definitely see James, Sirius and Remus as a trio, it's hard to imagine Peter with them. I liked your interpretation of their relationship at the beginning, but what Remus was forced to do sounds a bit too much. But even though we don't like Peter, their friendship has to make sense on some level, but if it is based on lies and pretending, how could it possibly last for so long? I can see Peter being scared and even trying to pretend he, like Sirius and James, didn't care Remus was a werewolf. But outright asking Remus to lie is another thing. It says on Pottermore that Remus was the reason others even noticed Peter, and you portrayed this at the beginning of their friendship, but I'm a bit disappointed by this turn of events. Dumbledore's words about Remus only wanting a little kindness and consideration sounded somewhat strange, as if Remus had to deserve normal treatment. I'd imagine Dumbledore would say something about Remus being a normal boy, after all he let him attend Hogwarts without even knowing him and he's certinly aware of the way the rest of the wizarding world sees werewolves. My point is, those words he said to Peter sound like asking for pity, not just acceptance. That part with Snape and the Slytherins was great, though. It's typical Remus there, Remus Lupin at his best. Absolutely amazing. I loved how you showed that Remus is important to Sirius as his confidante. I wonder, though, how you'll make Remus act after that prank on Snape, given such a close relationship with Sirius. I only hope he won't forgive him quickly and easily, because judging by the direction the story has taken, this might happen. That mystery with the teacher is fascinating. Maybe she is a member of the Sirius doesn't trust James implicitly, does he? I don't know about this...I mean, their friendship doesn't have to be perfect, but it's a bit early for the mistrust to spring between them. I do love how you describe the beginning of the first war, I've always been interested in this.I'm so sorry for Remus, it's in character for him to blame himself for being selfish, but going as far as trying not to touch Peter...I don't know if I'll be able to tolerate this.
Guest chapter 52 . 9/21/2018
I loved that parallel with Neville's situation. However, I have a feeling in your story Remus is portrayed as someone who lacks confidence in his own knowledge. I don't know whether I got the right impression, but it seems to me that while he might not believe he is worthy of friends, his magic skills are quite good (remember those flames he conjured in PoA). And I don't think the teacher would actually have to force him to participate. Of course he would be reluctant, but it seems to me that once he saw there was no choice, he would raise his hand. I don't think the word comfy is appropriate in your story, since you generally use literary words. There's something in Remus's character that makes me think he's weak, and I don't think it's actually true. That scene with Lily really strengthened this impression. That dialogue between her and Remus was a bit confusing, too. I'm not sure which of them knew about the dragons, since if I remember correctly, Remus definitely knows, and it seemed a bit strange for Lily to offer to ask Betta to let him see the pictures. I didn't like the way Sirius talked to McGonagall. I don't think she'd allow anyone to talk to her like that and I do believe she would be the one teacher Sirius and James would respect.
Guest chapter 51 . 9/21/2018
Just like James, I don't quite know what I think. Apart of my confusion has to do with the fact that I read a ficlet where none of them actually cared Remus was a , they are teenagers, and teenagers don't always understand the full extent of the problem. Of course, teenagers also aren't very tolerant when it comes to being Remus has the advantage of not having a visible disability and I always thought this was one of the reasons his friends didn't mind he was a werewolf. I assume James's reaction was based on the fact that he despises dark magic. But what he told Remus sounded like something an adult might say to a child's parents upon learning that their child was a werewolf. Also, in PoA Remus mentions that there were 'nearmisses' and 'we laughed about them afterward'. If James was so concerned about other people's safety, what made him run around with a werewolf completely ignoring the fact it was unsafe? James was also the one who called Remus's condition a furry little problem, it will be hard to achieve this sort of acceptance from this point in the story seeing as James can't fully accept Remus's affliction. I also have to say I'm glad this isn't going to be slash. The truth is that in fanfic the only difference between slash and an ordinary friendship is that the former has more intimacy. Though Sirius's behaviour made me wonder as to what your views on this idea are.
