I can see two big problems with the way you've told this chapter...
first: if having a family grimoire gives your family ANY kind of advantage, be it just the prestige of being known to have preserved your family's history and secrets in book form, be it that it can be used to strengthen the family magic and really gives you an edge magically, why wouldn't they try and recreate a grimoire. Even if it takes decades or centuries to come close to the level of usefulness or renomee that was lost with the old one, it will be worth it in the long run... and even having a minor, less worthy grimoire should be far better than just accepting to have NONE. So each family with some pride in their ancestry line should try to write one and each family having lost theirs over time should have started anew with theirs everytime it happened... and the secret how to create the true, powerful and glorious grimoires would be safeguarded multiple times so as to ensure the family won't ever lose it completely... Still, the Potters might have been one of the most careful, protective and successful families in guarding their original 1500 years old grimoire and thus it could be especially powerful, rich in wisdom or famous... one more reason to try and extinguish their line...
The other problem is that Hermione would not be limited to just Professor Binns teachings... she would know the history book almost by heart and she has read A history of Hogwarts so often that it became a running gag in fanfics to shower her with unusual variants, weird things contained in its allknowing pages or sinister manipulations forging the beloved book by omitting or lying about things... If the nine original Wizengamot founding families were something special at any time between the founding of Hogwarts and today, it should be able to find multiple mentions of them and their status in the book and Hermione would be aware of it.
btw as to Harry reading it, wouldn't it be hard to decipher a thousand year old handwriting? Shouldn't it be in latin or older forms of english he has never learned to speak or read? Or does it more work like a psychic imprint on the books magic itself, the rings translating the THOUGHT behind the writing more than really giving the reader an ability to read "in foreign tongues" or more precisely in ancient ones? :D
Hmmm... the forefathers of the Blacks were good guys? What if their grimoire wasn't really LOST, but merely hidden away or protected against the use by a disciple of the Dark Arts that would want to use its secrets for evil or selfish purposes rather than to protect and better the community? Wouldn't it be fun if Sirius could stumble about the true thing and it would change his view at his family and life in general? :) Just some random thought i had when those two spoke about the Potter book. ;) Oh and it would become a scholar of the arts of the codified remembrance of our common past to draw on such exquisite a ressource, wouldn't it? :D
I'm all favorable for the parts before it turns into the kitchen, then it gets a bit too foolish for my tastes, but that's just me. Before that the story contained some interesting ideas (It's always fascinating if it gets me to think about the pros and cons of a concept and the weaknesses of a description or the logic behind it :D so yeah i've got my pound of flesh out of this and then some. So much fun contemplating the grimoire stuff and other ideas) and i'm actually giddy to see Sirius really teach at Hogwarts and how their bet turns out to go... Call me crazy, but he should be good in connecting with Teenagers and bring his syllabus over to them... and of course in corrupting their innocent teen souls and turning them all into pranksters. But who'll scorn him for that? :P
Oh and just as an honorary mention... the feeling that Ginny is deep in the doghouse was also pretty nice for me to see. Always was more a H/Hr fan than anything else. So go, story, go! ;D

Took a look at some of the reviews this is getting, and i wanna say this.
Not every last 'Puff was "anti-harry" as a example there 5 males and 5 females per house in Harrys sorting cohort of '91 in cannon during CoS we see only 3 of the 10 'Puffs bad mouthing him, in GoF it's only Zacharias Smith and Justin Finch-Fletchley bragging about wearing the badges. Now keep in mind the other house's we don't see Luna till OotP but during GoF are we supposed to believe Luna hadn't at least once spoke up in Harry's defense at least once in her unique way of speaking threw allegories? Are we to assume that the "House of Intelligence" pulled a "Ron" in it's whole entirety and didn't smell a plot like Harry did? Now the lion's den, There are Ron and Seamus who lead the "Anti-Harry" faction during the parselmouth incident and the goblet sure. Then there's the "Go with the flow" crowd in Gryffindor Like Dean, Lavender, and Parvati who back off from Harry to avoid taking flak. Then there's Hermione's crowd with Nevile, and the Twins who support Harry fully. Now as for Susan we don't see much of anything from her in cannon the sum total of the half paragraph worth of lines that feature her threw out the books she is seen as understanding of the social pressure he is under, and otherwise sympathetic to the crap he is going threw. It's not odd at all the there's a fast relationship building between them if you think about it it's a fan fic after all. I'll put it this way Daphne Greengrass 100% blank slate, Susan Bones 45% blank slate for fic authors.

Free house elf eh? good way to dodge Hermione drama lol
| Blitzstrahl chapter 2 . 12/4/2013
Some people whine about the goblin Horcrux purge tool, I like to think with the bloody history between goblins and wizards, That the goblins would have studied wizard magic in true detail to know how to kill said wizards better including necromancy which i believe Horcrux's to a version of.

I like Harry x Named female minor character just fine, It's a shame Susan Bones doesn't get roles other than "Harry's Harem whore number 3,737" She's such a damn useful character, with her "In" with the DMLE/Auror corps.
