An excellent chapter - whenever I read your characterisations of Jesse, even when you give him a totally different background like here, it makes me want to re-read your other stories just to get more of him, if that makes sense. He is so irresistably cocky, I love it. Very clever, by the way, the Spring Awakening touches. I can't wait for Jesse and Rachel to both "meet their match".

No doubt this feedback is coming far too late to be of any value, but I'm just now getting around to clearing up some things that have been pending for a long while.
First, I have to say that this is a fascinating and intriguing premise and it's brilliantly written so far. Of course, I'd expect nothing less from the two of you! You've sucked me into this dark world that the girls inhabit, and I already care about them and hope against hope that they'll somehow manage to be granted a taste of freedom in the not-too-distant future.
This sneak peek has left me with a lot of questions, some of which you'll no doubt answer in subsequent chapters. I'll admit to being confused about the time period. Clearly, it's set close enough to the present for there to be TV, one-way glass, video cameras and timed locks on doors, but there's an almost '60s feel to it to me that probably has something to do with the virtual slavery of the troupe. The deference with which everyone treats Shelby reinforces this. While I can understand her having cowed her charges into submission - no doubt with a fair bit of physical violence - I can't quite figure out why all of the adults in the theatre would go along with the restrictive rules Shelby's put in place. It's as if she's master over all, and she's got something on each and every one of them to keep them in line.
I also wonder how all of these girls became part of the troupe, and how it is that they've come to live in what feels like a Dickensian orphanage. It's hard to fathom that such almost total isolation could take place in this day and age (in the Western world, anyway), although that might just speak to my own naiveté about the seamy underbelly of life that I've thankfully had no experience with. As a reader, I cringed at what I perceived to be the horror of their lives - insular, no contact with outsiders, very little chance to venture beyond the confines of the theatre, literally being locked in at night...
I'm also curious about Will's troupe. How different are they from Shelby's? Does Will rule with a similar iron fist, or is he gentler? And, the big question - how/why did Jesse end up joining so late? How will he cope, entering such a tightly controlled world (if, in fact, that's how Will's is)? How soon until he gets into major trouble with Will, Shelby, or both?
It definitely does have the feel of Spring Awakening to it (maybe that's why I'm questioning the time period - this seems almost like a throwback to a far earlier time), especially in the way that Rachel is so very sheltered. She longs for something, but she doesn't know what it is, and she's deliberately kept ignorant of a great many things that young girls of her age generally should and do know about. Not to mention the desire for touch, and to be okay being close enough to slap, because it also means being close enough for the occasional kinder touch.
IMO, you've nailed the characters so far. I'm eagerly anticipating Jesse and Rachel's first meeting, and the inevitable fallout to come.
